Something very strange happened to me on the highway.
i was in stop and go traffic for about 20 min. It was because there was slight flooding across the highway
After I finally got through the small amount of water my right side wheel started shaking to the point I was unable to control the truck at anything over 40 mph. It literally felt as off the wheel would fall of if I kept driving. I had to get off the highway. The passenger side where smelled like burning brake and the wheel etc was super hot like I could feel and smell the heat of the metal.
After waiting like 5 min. i decided to drive very slow in a side road and if it seemed ok I would get back on the highway.
it seemed fine maybe a slight feeling but thing bad at like 30 mph. So I got back on the highway and as I got up to speed it was terrible again shaking uncontrollably.. so I slowed way to to 45-50 with my flashers on and prayed I could limp to the next exit…
As I went maybe about 1-2 miles the shaking started to go away. As I tested with faster and faster speed it completely disappeared.. I got back up to 65-70 and it was perfect as if nothing had ever happened. I got of the next exit and drove home the other 10 miles with nothing noticeable at all.
I’m wondering WHAT HAPPENED? Should I be concerned? I’ve never had something like that happen before and assume it must have had something to do with driving through that water?

Sounds like one of your calipers froze up. I'd strongly urge you to check your brakes and re-lubricate the caliper slide pins.

I was going to say a wheel bearing went bad, but the smell of burning brakes is the clue that it wasn't a bearing.

How deep was the water? I've taken my Titan through water well over the axles without any issues. As dubyam said, a brake maintenance session may be in order. Verify that the pads are seated properly in the caliper. Remove, clean and lubricate the caliper slides and then reinstall. Check to make sure the rotors aren't warped. If there was enough heat that you could feel it, there may be some damage.

The first thing I thought was the rotors warped
So my thought was well I’ll have to nurse it home.
but then slowly everything went perfect. Is it possible they hit the cold water and quickly went out of shape then went back to shape ??! It sounds crazy.
the water was only about 8”-12” the water was prob close to freezing I’m in ny.

I haven't experienced rotors warping and then unwarping. Once they're warped, that's it. At least that how it's worked on my vehicles.

How many miles on the brakes? If you think the brakes are close to their life, then consider picking up replacement parts. As long as you're in there far enough to take the caliper off, replacing parts isn't much more work.

It's possible. If that's the case then you'll find significant scoring on the pads/rotors.

If you had a jammed caliper, that squares with what you've described. Likely the pad wore down enough that it wasn't contacting the rotor as hard, later.

I've actually had this happen on my truck with a brand-new set of brakes. Two weeks out of the shop...

Old-school fix for a jammed caliper: first, get to the side of the road. (Should be doing this anyway, in any case.) Then give it a couple minutes to cool. Try driving forward BUT SLOWLY this time again, and try the brakes LIGHTLY. If you swerve to one side ro feel the wheel pull even the least little bit, then you have a jammed caliper for sure. So next back up and jam the brakes HARD. Go forward and back, jamming the brakes hard each time. Often, you'll knock it loose.

This is only a temporary fix to get you going; get the truck to a shop as soon as you can.

Thank you. When I got off the highway I parked at a gas station. Something told me to go in reverse and jam on the brakes. That’s exactly what I did like twice. Then it felt as if it was gone at low speed. As I got up to speed on the highway it started and and then quickly vanished within about a mile. Never did it again the whole at home. No signs of anything odd when braking either. No smells or heat when I got home.

I had something like this happen in my old Jimmy but it only happened once and it only lasted a couple minutes. I'm betting the jammed caliper is what happened. Maybe got some kind of soot in there when you went through the water and just needed to be rustled loose after a few brake presses. I stressed about it for a while when it happened to me but it didn't happen again so I figured it was just some freak occurrence and that it had self corrected. Hope that's all it was for you too.

Glad you found the issue.

So on my way to work it did it again but it was very mild this time and went away
I pulled off before I got Onto the highway and got gas when I pulled off brakes are kind of smelly and hot
It seem to come and go every few miles and eventually over my 50 mile trip to work was gone by the time I got there
brakes were not burning or anything like that not really sure what is going on
Something else I noticed when I took the brakes off the caliper seemed hard to compress yesterday with c clamps but they did compress

It was more of a thumping. Def not the abs feeling
I narrowed it down to a caliper piston that was frozen. I’m pretty sure when it would compress and push the pads in the one piston was just staying on causing the caliper to bounce against the rotor. Once the brake pad wore down it would stop. Thsrs why on the highway it stopped, then once I would get off again and use the brakes it would start again etc

I’m not sure about driving through the water or not but the same thing happened to my titan when I was driving down the highway. It smelt like I was burning the brake linings right off the brake shoes. When I finally got it home I put it up on the jack and pull the tire off to take a look. At first I thought it was the brake caliper sticking and then, my stepson, which is a mechanic told me to replace the short brake line from the caliper to the metal part of the brake line because it might be partially plugged. I replaced both of the short rubber brake lines on the Front two wheels of the truck and sure enough that took care of the whole problem. It’s been about four years now and I’ve never had that problem cents. That short rubber hose leading from the caliper was a surprise to me that it would even clog up but it did. Hope this helps you

been driving it here and there. Took it for a few test drives and was perfect. So I decided to drive the truck to work yesterday because I wanted to stop a a dealer to look at another truck. Every was perfect drive all kinds of rosds and highway about 60 miles
On the way home after the dealer I got on the highway and it started doing it again on the highway, but I would call it mild compared fo originally. I couldn’t believe it. It stopped slowly doing it again and I went home ok. I’m stumped why it would come back it’s puzzling me

you will have to bleed the lines when you change those short pieces out
