Flo Pro Muffler Comparison

As a result of a little too much in-cab sound with my dual exhaust Flowmaster 70 X-pipe system and recommendation from my muffler shop, I had the Flowmaster replaced this morning with the equivalent Flo-Pro (FP-726D), all other components remaining the same.
The Flo-Pro definitely has bit deeper and more pleasing tone, but overall it's slightly louder at all speeds/rpm. Although the drone effect is reduced, the sound level in the cab is higher and still way too loud at the 55-65mph range that most freeway driving around here dictates. Back to the drawing board (and muffler shop)!! They must love me.

(Did get a Flo-Pro hat this time. Should I just tear it in half and stuff it up the tailpipes?)

I'm not having much luck in getting the right sound either. At this time I've got the flowmaster delta 50 series installed with dual outlets. The drone at 55 is unbearable so I'll be going back to the muffler shop soon myself. I may try the muffler Juma is talking about, high flo and quieter would be nice.

See "the head" comments in his thread on the walker dynomax below this thread. He is using the small case and still getting quiet. I would recommend the 17748 for 2.5 inch exhausts, 17769 for 3 inch, and the 17786 for 2.5 in and (2) 2.25 inch out. these are all large case muffs with plenty of flow capacity. On my caprice they were as quiet as stock but ran like the wind. http://www.dynomax.com/superturbo.stm

On another note, drone can be fixed yet another way:

Who got drone from their catback and don't like it? Me for one. Here is a thread on how the Mustang guys fixed it and how it all came out. let's not blow a gasket over the guys welding or complain about no performance sound. Its just for those who want to run a catback but avoid that 1500-2000 rpm drone:>)

Well he dynomax does drone between 55-60mph, also. There are certain throttle areas when barely speeding up (just normal driving) that it resonates a bit but once you get at that speed, it is pretty quiet.

which dynomax muffler do you have?
17733 or similar. if it drones too, then maybe I will have to work on that tailpipe. the 17747 didn't drone at all but it was dual system with an X crossover. It also had resonators after the muffs (which shouldn't have made a difference). Actually, my Gibson is getting pretty close to Ok. I took off that chrome tip and that helped it a lot as did tightening all the connections and slip joints. I've got an appointment tuesday at an exhaust fabricator and perhaps that's the time to get one of those quarter wave side resonators. wondering what to do.....

Jet, Juma, Head,
Thanks guys, I was thinking maybe the 'too loud/drone' thing was just me! After carefully studying the Mustang thread, I'm thinking that Juma's point is closer to the mark than anything, ie, this is a resonant condition vs drone. Kind of a fine distinction, but drone to me is a repetitive or cyclic sound while the resonance is just a constant noise almost a 'roar'. So, I'm going to switch my description from 'drone' to 'resonant' when I go back to the shop. The Dynmax large might be the solution.
And, oh-by-the-way, I think on my Titan that this resonance was present with the stock system, just subdued to the point where it wasn't objectionable. Could be that with a free-flow catback, the native resonance is greatly amplified? May be too that the the exhaust system mounting, cab or bed floor/structure, frame, drivetrain are involved in the resonant condition as well, and fixes might include undercoating, interior mats, ad nauseum. So many questions, so little time! Could get way too esoteric for us amateurs, but the first to find a really civilized free-flow catback solution will be a hero.
Keep on Truckin'!

I have a 5x11 magnaflow that eliminated all cabin noise (I get the pull that I want and the exterior rumble--but sounds like stock inside--at idle I cant even hear it--and no drone. if flowmaster makes one why not try a longer muffler--as it really helped in my vehicle

More Info, Please!

Flowmaster 70 series, I have one, and it has zero drone what so ever.
Hemi,
What configuration do you have? Stock Y-Pipe? X-Pipe? Dual-in/Dual-out or other type of Series 70? Single or Dual out the back or side? Diameter of pipes?
Sounds like you have the 'secret' setup!
Thanks,
Dale

Stock "Y", single in/out, 3" from the outlet to a 4" tip. Muffler is almost as long as the stocker, whick helps keep her quiet, my wife will not deal with a loud vehicle anymore. :)

Thanks Hemi! Yours is the second setup I've heard of that uses the stock Y-pipe, single-in/out Series 70 Flowmaster with good (not-too-loud) results. Maybe the secret is the pipe vs the muffler. If your wife approves, must be great! My wife also dislikes the 'noise', although it's mostly music to my ears. :)

so is that a single 3" into the muffler as well as a single 3" out? you said 3" from the outlet to the tip, what about from the stock Y into the muffler?

I have the Magna Flow x-pipe 2 in/2 out mufler. Very little drone, and a very deep meaty rumble.

Thanks Hunter,
I like the Flo-Pro better than the Flowmaster, may try the Magnaflow next!

Flowmaster, mabey too loud?

Just put Flowmasters on mine, they sound mean as hell, but probably a little loud for everyday driving. I dont have the funds to be changing my mind on mods like this, so i will just have to live with a slightly obnoxious rumble.

Garrick,
Lookin' Good! I'm kinda getting used to the Flo-Pro. If you plan on coming up Mansfield way, give me an email or PM, I'll buy the beer! Love to hear how your dual FM's sound.
