About two weeks ago my truck was at the dealer and they informed me the front diff pinion seal and flange were leaking and so they replaced the front diff pinion seal and flange for a price of over $650.
I did not inspect it after I received it back, but two weeks and about 800 miles later when I went underneath the truck this past Saturday intending to change the engine oil, I noticed a lot of gear oil on the cross-member and forming a droplet of oil on the front diff pinion seal, so it looks like their repair was not successful at stopping the leak. I felt around and I am assured it is coming from the front diff pinion seal, where you can see the droplet in the second image.
If you look at the second image the fluid seems to be coming from between that rusted ring and the body of the front diff. Is that rusted ring the pinion seal and if they replaced it shouldn't it be not rusty? I can kind of insert a fingernail between that ring and the body of the front diff but I am not sure if that needs to be super-tight or not. It seems to be just pressed in there from my perspective.
I have an appointment to take it back to the dealer tomorrow but I am hoping to be better informed so if you have knowledge to share I would appreciate it. Is it unusual that this repair should be leaking two weeks later? Thanks in advance for your help and advice.
