Fuel filling problem

Anyone else having problems getting gas into their Titan? the other day no matter what I did, the gas would come splashing back out of the filler neck and drip all over the truck. Like it was hitting an air bubble halfway down the filler neck. I eventually was able to fill it, or so I thought. The pump shut off and I rove away, but then saw on the guage that it was not full, like it made this air bubble in the neck again which made the pump "think" the tank was full. Haven't tried it again, but it never did this before.

We had this problem once or twice on trips. Occasionally you will get to a station where everything at the pump is new and you have very high flow at the nozzle. IF you slam one of these babies immediately to full blast, you will get one whopper of a kickback of gas in the Titan.

Solution: Nozzle all the way in, start slow, set it on the second step of the autofill pawl. Check the flow rate at the pump. Not the dollars window, but the volume window. If it's really zooming, don't go any faster. Otherwise, go to the top step. When the nozzle shuts off, draw it most of the way out, and go slow to top off. My particular truck will take a couple of gallons more this way. Listen for the gas coming up the filler pipe and quit when the nozzle auto-stops or if you see fuel.

This won't work well at all if you have the full-bellows type of vapor-capture emission control nozzles. With those, you just have to be patient and once it auto-stops, you've pretty much got all you're going to get.

Sometimes with high-flow nozzles, the fuel will percolate excessively as it goes in, and will fool the auto-stop on the nozzle. With some of the newer ones, once it shuts off, it's off until the pump is reset. Best strategy for those is to put in most of your fuel on a higher rate, then when you know it's getting full, switch down to the nozzle's lowest fill rate.

I had this problem today.. No matter how slow I went or the position of the nozzle it still spewed out... First time ever.. and my truck has almost 6000 miles on it..

Yeah it's wierd. I've filled up at this station before and never had an issue. Mine was the same way in that no matter how slow I had the nozzle it would cough back. Wonder why this is now an issue and never before.
Also when it finally did work and shut off, it made the telltale sound of the neck filling up so I assumed it really was full. Took off and the needle was just above the 3/4 mark. It took 24 gallons according to the pump to fill it.

next time that happends to you pull the pump completely out of the gas tank then rock your truck up and down or side to side.as the fuel inside moves around it releases the air in the tank.this also works when you think its full do this and watch how much more gas you be able to put in it.

Now I think its stupid to even have to do that to a vehicle... I can see me shaking my truck next time I need gas.. :) People will think I'm insane :)

This same thing happened to me the very first time I tried to fill the truck and all most ever time I’ve filled up since. It’s as if the nozzle dose not angle right when it goes inside the truck. I don’t think its the pump either because i have had this happen at multiple gas stations and even one full serve station. I think this might be a little more then just some trapped air too. This could add up to a lot of wasted fuel :crying:. Any one have the dealer look at it yet?

Fuel system pictures from the service manual....

There is one way valve built into the tank fill nozzle. Also the vapor recovery has a valve that should be open when refueling to capture the vapor until the tank gets full.

Maybe this will help to figure out what is going on here.

This has happened to me twice in the last month. My truck has about 8500 miles on it and it has never done this before. I live in Central Ohio and the temperature has started falling and I am wondering if this has anything to do with it? Its odd that people are just starting to experience this syndrome. The first time it happened, gas seemed to be flowing out of the pump at a extremely rapid rate. I thought, maybe the station turned up the wick on the pumps??? After the second occurrence (at a different station) I started wondering. I would hazzard a guess in saying either some part has started to fail or some other factor (possibly temp/ humidity/ barometric pressure) is causing it. God knows the change in temp has caused my tire pressure sensors to go crazy!

The main problem I seem to have filling mine up is a empty wallet!!
San Diego $$$$$$2.50++++

P.S. We have a spare mazda mx-3 4-banger (30+mpg) in the driveway but I cant seem to part with the TITAN!!!

If you get a coat hanger and stick it in your filler hose you'll find out it's those pesky dollar bills clogging it up. They seemed to flow better at a lower rate like $1.30 / gal a few months back.

4 fills back started to have the gas spurting back out on truck, on ground issue. 3 fills back all fine but then last fill ridiculous. Gave up on filling once had ~ Âľ tank.

Read many of the posts about evaporative solenoid valve, etc. On my Jul.2004 57,000 mi. Titan the valve isn't as easily accessible as it seemed to be stated ... plate below it. So thought, try the easiest thing I found here first. Plus when went to dealer (BJ Nissan N, Houston) parts counter person checked with mechanic and said what you stated was the most likely cause, that they're open to 5 and willing to sell me whatever part I want if this didn't work. Got a varnish-covered coat hanger, cut as close as possible to where winds, used some toluene to remove the varnish coating, then worked one end into the side vent tube opening right side of filler tube, pushing gradually, when felt some resistance, pulled back a bit, rotated wire, back in again now rotating as going along, whenever resistance, repeated as above. Finished pushing and rotating hanger with large pliers in order to get most length through possible.

On the way back from the dealership I stopped by Best Buy and bought a can of 'compressed gas duster'. The tip of the red tube on side of can just reached the filler vent tube opening. Kept doing short bursts until smelled gas fumes ... I assume from the top of the gas in the tank by way of the main fill tube ... gas in the compressed gas can is odorless. So it appears a wire hanger length of wire made it through the curves in the vent valve tube near where it goes into the tank by rotating it while pushing in, pulling out.

Then, off to the gas station to test. Fuel nozzle rubber boot firmly on filler tube opening and gas flowed fine gas nozzle handle pulled to max flow position.

So, a few hours here, a 10 min. drive to, back from dealership, 10 min. or so talking with parts counter person, he with a mechanic, 10 min. stop at Best Buy for compressed gas, 10 min. under truck deciding not to try anything with solenoid valve at that time, go get hanger, cut & clean it, couple min. pushing it through, min. or so with the compressed gas.

Now to get a feel if any of the gunk in the filler tube vent has an effect on truck running, the fuel filter.

I’ve mostly read here that the fuel filter is in the gas tank but also read that it’s in or part of the fuel pump which is on the outside of the gas tank. So I’m wondering where the fuel filter actually is.

Since wire-hanging the gas tank fill tube vent line and driving to and back to fill with gas all is fine so far. Piece of wire and small tool chest in truck at all times now.

I'm having the same problem too. The first time is spilled all over my shoes which really pissed me off, the second time was at a different station and it still happened (and no, I didn't try to put the diesel pump in the truck). I guess I'll just add it to the list of items when I go to arbitration with Nissan in a couple of months for the assortment of other problems that won't get fixed. :eh:

Working on it !

Well hello there Titan owners... !

A Titan customer of mine directed me to this website..
Looks pretty good .
He brought his LE in today for this very issue, we did check the filler neck and
hoses, No visual issues noted...
We will be contacting Nissan Techline today to report the issue.
This is the 1st one, we have seen with this problem.

Thanks,
R.

Nissan Service from where? Since you refer to a customer of yours, I assume you are from a dealer and not Nissan corporate. Regardless, maybe you can help some of us get Nissan's attention on a number of issues with the Titans that we can't seem to get addressed. If you want to know what they are, spend a little time roaming around the forum-- there's plenty of issues out there for you to read about. We all (well at least most of us) love our Titans, but it gets awful frustrating when a particular dealer or Nissan corporate continues to ignore know issues with the truck.

Welcome aboard, and I hope you don't come to regret your decision to sign up!!! :jester:
