Ok so I’m driving down the road & I start hearing bad grinding noises very similar to bad brakes pads but worse ! But when I take my foot off the gas the noise stops instantly. The issue is getting worse it’s happening more often & if I don’t take my foot off the gas the sound won’t stop it’s driving me crazy ! Please help
In case it helps I’ve put new brake pads front & rear , replaced motor mounts ( there was a thin metal plate that I did not put back on ) but bolts are torqued to spec , I put new u joints & carrier bearing over a year ago , new front end , took sway bar off , no e brake. Thinking I’ll replace tranny mount next I’m at aloss

So, no work within a day or two of the noise? I know you said you replaced a number of things recently, but nothing immediately prior to the sound?

new motor mounts and the noise started.... hmm.

check to see if any of the pulleys are rubbing anything. check to see if the fan is hitting the shroud

maybe the power steering pump could, but not the rack and pinion when just going straight.

get a long screwdriver, or a mechanic stethescope, and listen the different parts bolted to the front of hte engine. listen to the alternator, the power steering, the ac, and the tensioner and see if one of them are making a grinding noise.

when you put the screwdriver on the part and your ear to the handle, you will definitely hear which one sounds like its grinding, if its one of those

Soooo I replaced the tranny mount & where the driveshaft connects to the tranny I can see where about an 1/8 th of an inch of an area that has been worn down to the metal. And the problem has gone away about 90% but I’m still hearing it a little. Thinking I should take the driveshaft off smooth out the connection area ….

take a picture for us, if you can.

a new mount should not have made anything rub. and i hope it didn't rub a groove into your driveshaft because that could end up very bad after a while.

i guess your old mounts were so worn that when you put the new motor mounts in, the angle on the powertrain assembly was off enough that the driveshaft was rubbing whatever. so you needed the trans done also to bring everything back in alignment. i wonder if your truck has a center support bearing on the driveshaft that you need to check also?

but grab a picture because a 1/8 grove worn into your driveshaft could be very bad.

Omg there is a groove & after driving it 2-3 x the noise still happens but not nearly as much. I’ll take pic asap how bad is it

Transmission flex plate is in the bell housing.

You do have some clean marks at that one spot but the rest looks ok.

Rereading everything, i feel likes got to be engine related, snd not driveline related or it would contiue while you are rolling, instead of when letting off the gas

When replaceing the motor mounts there was a plate that went between the mount and holder but I didn’t realize that until it was to late. Could that do it ? Also since I changed the transmission mount the clean marks got worse ….

How thick was the plate?

oh, those are heat shields for the mounts. they won't affect your powertrain alignment.

ok, so all engine and transmission mounts are replaced so everything should be straight now. the only shiny marks are on the output of the transmission to driveshaft. can you put the back up on jack stands, chock the wheels, start the truck and get under and listen? that might be the last check we have but specifically look at the part that has the shiny mark on it

Only issue is it doesn’t happen all the time smooth or bumpy it’s driving me crazy. But I’ll try what u suggest

did you start another thread on the start issue? that needs to be in another thread so some of the first gen guys can give advice. this noise one is an odd ball one so probably not many people have had the same issue but the starting one, there are probably some people who have and can give advice on what to check

You can drain the trans fluid and replace the filter to help with catching small shavings

On your truck, i do not but if you go to youtube and type titan transmission fluid change, something will probably pop up showing what to you
