Help me pick an exhaust. (JBA, Stillen, Gibson, Magnaflow)

I want to get an exhaust system for my truck because I'd like it to sound more like a V8. I'm about to install an injen intake this weekend also.

2008 CC LE 4X4 with big tow

90% of my driving is on the hwy, and I do spend alot of time behind the wheel. I already have 63K on this truck. So, I definitely don't want an exhaust that drones between 65-80 mph. Which is the exhaust with good sound and very little drone at hwy speeds?

Here is what I've gathered from reading several exhaust threads:

JBA - Better performance gains, and great sound. However, I've heard mixed stories about drone with this system.

Stillen - Just a tad louder than stock with modest gains. Hardly any drone.

Gibson - Probably very similar to the Stillen system.

Magnaflow - Great sound, but how is the drone?

For me with the JBA and an AEM CAI the only place it seems to drone is at about 1900 rpms. But for the most part while cruising you'll be below that and above that level its just your standard V8 sound. Hope that helps, can't speak for the other systems, and if you pick JBA and don't like it (which I doubt you will) the it wasn't my fault lol

Ive got a JBA on my T and the rumble sounds very good with little to no drone at all. Im going out of my way to say JBA. Hope that helps.

I also have the JBA with an AEM intake. It does drone a good bit about 1800 - 1900 RPM but makes descent power. I recently swapped out the muffler that came with my JBA system to a magnaflow and it reduced the drone a good bit.

I have JBA and Volant gen3 and the intake is louder than the exhaust.

Damn you have an 08 with 63k miles already!.. Holy crap where are you driving to?.. Mines an 05 and im barely gonna hit 68k. But I would go with the JBA im tryin to save up for that exhaust right now. I love the way my flowmaster sounds but I want the JBA for performance.

Yep, I use this truck for work. They pay us mileage, so it works out pretty good. It's not unusual for me to put 800+ miles a week on it. I travel to where ever our job site is at the time. I could fly to some places, but then when you have tools to carry it makes it more difficult to fly.

Ok, someone's got to speak up for the Maggies here...
The first thing I did to my '08 was put an 18" 2-into1 Magnaflow on so it sounded a little more like a V8. It sounded pretty good most of the time (IMHO) but would pop when rev'ed cold or running low octane gas. It also had a pretty bad drone between 1500 and 1900 RPM, mostly in overdrive with very little throttle.
I added a K&N intake and got a nice little boost overall but more drone and more popping. I recently had a set of Doug Thorley LT headers and Magnaflow hi-flow cats installed and it turned out to be way more than the 18" muffler could handle - the drone doubled and the pops from the exhaust impulse with the headers got really bad. This engine has a strong, punctuated exhaust pulse all by itself - the headers made it substantially stronger.
My exhaust guy called Magnaflow dealer support while I was standing there and got a tech rep that actually knew a little about our trucks and he said the only way to reduce popping from our engines with a straight-through design (without reversed louvers) was to use as big a muffler as we could fit to get maximum resonant chamber size.
It worked.
We put a 22" on and I took it out for a test drive and it had gotten rid almost all of the popping and sounded really sweet with the headers too. It's a sleeper... We had already talked about an x-pipe and he really wanted to try one so he fabbed one up pretty quick and I took it for another test drive. No more popping at all, even better tone, and it even got a little more low end performance. The drone is still there but it quits at about 65 MPH so "I can't drive 55".
So far I'm pretty happy with it. I'm not going to be looking at cat-back systems anytime soon... We will be addressing the drone later this month with some tailpipe changes.

Any way you'd post pics of your setup so I can see how it compares to the layout of mine?

Well this sucks, I got into a fender bender this morning in New Orleans. I have some front end damage, so now I got to get that all handled. :crying:

Looks like my exhaust system will be put on hold for a little while longer.

However, keep this thread going for future reference. :)

Awww that sucks man, sorry to hear...And Tactical, I mentioned the Maggie!! The 22" at that! hat is a great sounding muffler from my understanding, and the 07's+ have it well off, they really don't need a catback, just a muffler and tailpipe swap IMO and the 07+ Titans are good to go!

I saw that. Good advice too! And pretty impartial since I know you love that JBA... I just thought I'd elaborate a little since I've had a couple Magnaflows now with different setups. You're right about the 07+ pipes too - Nissan finally got them right and they are as high a quality as most any of the cat-backs out there have.
I was actually getting tired of the 18" muffler before the headers though and was strongly considering the JBA myself since so many have had such good luck with them - I just hated ditching the dual pipes for a single. The 22" is a whole different story though and I think I'll be happy for a while.

I did HVAC for a couple of years.. All new construction though.. way better, I would hate to work in an old addic with insulation all over. I did that once and i would never do it again plus the pay wasn't worth it.

Buy the jba, you will love it!

That x-pipe is not in an ideal spot at all and it isn't fabbed correctly either. Not trying to pick at ya or whatever. If you look in the picture that has the x-pipe by itself, the center section is too small. It is not mandrel bent either but not that big a deal. I need to get rid of this damn Vortex muffler. It's too loud!! It does sound good though. ;-)

It's about as far forward as you can go without major mods to the b-pipes and both exhaust pipes which was farther than I wanted to go. And yes, it was hand built on the spot and, although I would have preferred a bit larger merge myself, he did a pretty good job all in all- it made a noticeable difference over the larger muffler swap alone including increased low end. Maybe one day I'll swap it out for a Magnaflow Tru-X or a Dr. Gas but for now it does quite nicely...

Looks like there was a lot more room under there from what I could see. At any rate, post up some vids so we can hear it. Some idle/revs and a WOT drive by would be awesome.

If you have a y-pipe set0up, I would get the 3" piping after the y-pipe and merge collector....In order to keep your torque, if you have an 04-06 y-pipe set-up exhaust get a 2.25 y (2.5 is ok but will still lose some low-end) into a 3" pipe into muffler. If your running tru-duals, then no bigger than 2.5"
