Here are the new ones.

First you empty all the crap out of your glove box.

there are two posts that keep the glove box from opening all the way, you can easily flex the box and get it to come out without removing a bunch of bolts.

Image

Image

Once the box is open, you have to release the cable that holds it closed. This just slides out of a notch in the side of the box.

Image

Image

Once the box is down, you can see the lid for the covers, remove this screw.

Image

removed the lid and you can see the filters (or lack thereof)

Image

use a flat blade or knife to removed one, then slide the other over and remove it as well.

Mine were pretty bad. I ran my air for a minute to make sure no leaves and crap were still in there.

Install is reverse of removal, slide in one, push it over, and slide in the other. Be sure to pay attention to the air flow direction arrows.

once you put it all back together, you are done! :redblob":redblob"

Yeah...airflow arrows should point up.

thanks for the pictorial, I've been planning to do mine for a while. I've been told NAPA has replacement filters pretty cheap. Part number 4854.

yea i think they were.. airflow should point down. the air flows down through the filter.

check out the "deals from other sites" thread for a killer deal on new filters. $10 shipped for a set, and they ship wicked fast. I added the link to the HOW TO post.

Are those the ones that feel like paper right?

I bought 2 sets in 2 weeks (due to mice eating my first one) (one from trustednameautoparts) and the second set i bought from "aircabinman" on ebay. These (aircabinman)had no air flow arrows, but are made of a "plasticy"/styrafoam (hard to explain, but did not feel like paper) material that i liked better than the paper feeling ones. Who knows if they filter better or not though, but for $11, they are also a good deal.

I replaced mine with Fram's....A little more expensive but they were treated with Arm & Hammer baking soda and were carbon infused, meaning NO musty smells.

Great write up beason. Thanks a lot. This is the first vehicle I've had that actually has these in it. Took a look at mine this morning and used the link you supplied to order me a set. Amazing at how much dust and crap was stuck in mine and the T only has 41K on her. Great deal at $9.97 shipped.

so apparently one of those leaves made it down to the fan. i get intermittent racket from it now. Maybe i should do a HOW TO on removing and cleaning the fan..

#17 ·
Damn!!!! Like I said, Ordered from the link you provided on Fri. and got them today (Mon.)!!!! That's some super fast shipping!!!!!!!!! That's from CA to PA. Can't beat that for less than $10. Thanks.:)

not sure if mine needed replaced, but at almost 90k miles on the truck....why not lol

#19 ·
since you have a king cab, you dont even have filters (but you do have the spot for them) so you are definitely due to add some if you want them (that is if you didnt add them prior).

#21 ·
I would say its worth it if you live in a dusty/dirty area. I live in a dusty area and I could tell the difference after adding them to my truck after 5 years without them.

Dont know if the "King Cab rule" still applies to the newer trucks(08+) regarding filters, but if you do a search, you will see that King Cabs did not come with filters installed (even if you had an LE).

For around $10 bucks (from the ebay link), you cant go wrong to at least try it.

^ True, I just ordered some as well. I get a ticking noise from time to time so I think I might have something near the fan. Will check it out when I put in the filters...

Great explanation and pics..Here's a good one, do you know the part # for the filter door? Two years+ ago dealer told me I needed to replace the filters, I didn't, and they kept the door....don't live near that dealer anymore...

I had some washables made a few years back by a Titan forum member.

So I kind of copied the idea, but they are not washable. They are "remakeable".

I made this one for my wifes Scion xB. You can do the same just different size and number. You would have to make 2 for the Titan.

I purchased the filter from HD and the frame from Hobby Lobby.
The filter was about $10 and the frame about $7. I used a coupon for the frame. LOL
You can make several filters out of this 20x25. When they get dirty, just change them out.

Used my miter saw to cut the frame pieces to size.

You use these clips or brackets to attach the frame pieces together.

I used some wire cutters to cut the plastic cage piece to size.

I used sissors to cut the filter to size. I used 1 layer of the carbon and 2 layers of the filter. Probably only need 1 layer of filter, but I decided to try 2 on this first one.

Finished product. Fits liiiiiike a glove. Carbon side down, filter side up.

Overkill? Probably.

Purdy? You betcha!!

Did it eliminate the musty wet sock smalling odor? How much? I don't have the tools to make those clean cuts. Guess I could just pay for those fram filters, but I like the idea of saving money and just buying filter materials.

Actually right now I do have a lot of time. I'm out on disability due to a auto accident.
But, it only took about 45mins to make.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet so I'll throw it in; you can just clean and re-use the original factory filters. I washed mine a couple of summers ago and it made a huge difference in the freeze factor.
First I removed any debris like bugs and leaves.
Then, using warm water, I just rinsed them in the sink. I ran the water through the filter from the clean through the dirty side till it was not too dirty anymore. Then sprayed them down good with 409 or similiar and let them let soak for 10 minutes. Them rinsed again till totally clean. I may have used a soft brush to scrub lightly, can't quite remember. Set in the sun or anywhere to dry and when dry re-install. Just like new and $0.00. I was prepared to go get new ones if they fell apart but they seemed pretty sturdy. They have been working great ever since, good cold air whenever I need it and we get 100+ here all the time.

After reading these posts, I am still confused. Arrows up or down. The manual says the arrow should point down, so I installed them with the arrow down pointing toward the floor board. The white strip in the middle is facing up toward the roof. Is this correct?

#40 ·
yes arrow down. the arrow shows air flow direction. the air comes in under the windshield, and flows down into the fan below the filters.

I installed mine correctly. It was the ones i took out, that were in wrong.
