Is there a way to confirm tow package with the VIN?

Looking at a 2008 SE that seems thave low options (i.e. it has manual seats w/ the flip down bench up front... which I prefer). The car lot says it has the tow package and it does have the hitch and factory trans temp gauge, but no BT mirrors. I'm trying to determine if it has the 3.36 gear or 2.9X gear. I know there's a sticker on the rear diff, but I'm trying to avoid calling the place again if possible. It's not local so I can't just go look.

Thanks,

Brian

check the label on your rear axle for big tow gears. 3.36 or just call the dealers service dept and they can tell you.
Perhaps calling the dealer with a VIN, but the sticker was suggested and isn't there.

Assuming the truck has stock sized wheels and tires (or fairly close), have them drive the truck at 70 MPH and tell you the RPMs. If it is about 2000, it has BT gears. Around 1700 RPMs and it is the 2.9X gearing. Again, this only works if the overall tire diameter is pretty close to stock.

Not correct. The tire size has no affect on the speedo reading. It does affect the actual speed of the vehicle.

So in short, the RPM/Speedo method works no matter what.

ALL Titans have the tow mode switch. All it does is change the shift points of gears 1-3.

Just because it has a hitch and the trans. gauge does not mean it has the B/T package. Obviously a hitch can be added at any time, the trans. temp gauge is standard on all titans after model year 2006 ( I believe it was 2007 or 2008), so if this is a 2008 model, then the trans. temp gauge is standard and not an indication of the B/T package. If it does not have B/T mirrors, then more than likely it does not have the B/T package, unless the previous owner changed out the mirrors. If the mirrors were changed out, there should be some signs of small abrasions or other subtle flaws that would lead you to believe they were, in fact, changed out. Are the mirrors power mirrors? if so, do they work? What class hitch is installed? If I am correct (please correct me if I am wrong), It should have a class IV hitch from the factory, so if it is not, then chances are it was added after-market.
Like a previous post stated, at 70mph should be around 2k rpm with stock tires. I do have the B/T package and that rpm is correct for 70mph.
Hope this helps a little....

I said nothing about speed, but to check the RPMs at a certain indicated speed. Larger (or smaller) tires will change the indicated speed witch will throw off the RPMs slightly from the numbers I gave.

Tire size has nothing to do with the relationship between the indicated speed and engine RPMs.

Lots of people keep saying the trans temp gauge was made standard but I've been shopping 2008+ trucks for a couple weeks now and have come accross more than a few than don't have it.

The '08 trucks were strange animals. They were emptying out the parts bin of all the '07 stuff they still had. I've run across two '08 trucks that had an '07 front bumper, grill, and wheels. :dunno:

I think my 08.5 has an 07 bumper, it has round fog light holes, it also has no trans temp gauge even tho it has a tow package.

On the build sheet it says under static
E grade (07 part) not sure what that means but I take it for sure there is something from 07 on my truck.

Exactly. I have no idea what that E means either, but for sure they were using up all the old parts still in the warehouse.
