It's expensive to fill your rear end!

I had the first "regular" service done on the Titan this morning, just under 3,700 miles on the truck with about 450 of that towing a 6k lb travel trailer. After seeing the posts concerning the rear end lube, I asked that it be changed too. It cost me about $25 for the oil change/service and about $100 to service the rear pumpkin! I was charged $46 for two quarts of gear lube!

Is this about right, or am I financing the service manager's next cruise?

Honestly.... can I really be the first to make a crude joke here?

Nah, too easy.
Carry on
Yeah, me too. I saw the title of this thread and thought, "what an easy target!" Then I saw that JayM was serious and decided better of it. :teethmast

BTW, JayM, I suspect what you paid is likely in line with what most shops would charge you, but in my mind that is way too much for such an easy job you can do yourself.. and you can save yourself $75 or so.

I paid $80.00 to have them do my rear when they did my oil this time. That day, Funny as it sounds, my mpg went up. Not a lot only about 1 mpg but it was good to see it works better with all the new oils.

The Mobil 1 75-140 is about $14-$15/qt at Pep boys

$100 isn't too out of line. The lube itself is about $30 for 2 qts.I used Mobile 1 75-90 several months ago(before the SB that dictated 75-140) and it was about $9/qt.The 75-140 Mobil 1 is about $15/qt at Pep boys.Bought a qt recently for my motorcycle-I was stunned!
The rear is a pretty easy job-45 minutes start to finish(collect tools, drain pan, paper underneath-simple green to spray on spill on rear end).Crawl under-loosen the upper fill hole(be sure it can be removed),pull drain plug, drain, reinstall plug-fill till it just about drips out-reinstall filler bolt-clean up.Dump old oil down catch basin(just kidding,I have a recycle center 1 mile away).
The lube does stink, you get a little crungy crawling under the truck, and you do end up with a fair number of drain containers sitting outside till your wife bugs you to go to the recycle center.I do all my oil changes because I am a cheapskate. If I didn't use Mobil 1 oil($60+ at oil change place),I wouldn't do it myself(my cost about $35)-you can get a change for $25 with dino oil-can't beat that.
The main advantages(oil and lube DIY) are that you know the drain bolts are Torqued and not crossthreaded, the filter has just one o-ring and was turned tight enough, but not so tight it can't be gotten off easily. For me,it is the $$-I'm just cheap!Luck.Charlie

you guys need to try amsoil sever wear 75-140 synthetic from Talkinghorse. I plan to change mine to this stuff this weekend.

Will cost me about $20 for the entire Job.

It should be much easier than doing a Motor oil change on the truck!

Go to rear pumpkin, remove Filler Plug, Remove Drain plug, drain into pan. Put Drain Plug Back in, put filler plug back in....I think it is harder to swap tires on the titan than it is to service the rear.

When I do change mine out again that's what I'm using, a much better price than Mobile 1.

For the record, they charged me $23 per quart for the lube. I don't have the service record here at work with me so I'm not sure if they just pulled the drain plug, or pulled the cover off.

As for the time, PHOEBISIS' comments on not just the time, but the hassle (that comment about the containers sitting around...). I've got too many other things to do! There was a time when no one turned a wrench on any of my vehilces, except me, and I'll still do aftermarket installations/upgrades on my own. No matter what you pay to who, they just never seem to take the time to do it right.
