So I get my final mod ready to go and I feel like a douchebag. I got hurt friday before last in a motorcycle crash at work , so I've been a bit under the weather with rash and gashes torn out of my face. I was however able to get up and drop my truck on Monday for the cam install. I picked the truck up Wednesday morning and did the slow roll home with it. I did notice a very slight lope from the cams , but the most interesting thing to me was the tapping noise from the valvetrain. Now I know my truck had a ticking with the stockers that I attributed to the injectors but this was'nt ticking , it was tapping/knocking. Today I took a break from pain meds and brought it back to the installer. He told me he had left the lash as set from the factory because the JWT spec was the same. And I'm just recalling that he said that because looking over the JWT spec the exhaust cam spec is different in that stock is .010-015 and JWT calls for .010-.013 . I'm ready for this to be over. So far this is the last of my mod list. In a short time I've done the OBX LT headers , Uprev, PRT catted, Borla XR1 the 07 IM , and these pretty mild S2 cams. Hell I even mounted up traction bars.

If anybody can offer some insight before I drop my truck back off on monday I'd really appreciate it. I already shot RB a pm and I'm waiting his response. Mech said he thought it sounded like an exhaust lifter after using a stethescope, but he want's it there so that he can check the valve lash cold after sitting.

I'm sorry but your mechanic is Fing retard, I have never had a set of cams installed and my mechanic not reset valve lash.

Tell him I said he's a moron! Every time you re and re a cam or cams (I come from d series, b series and k series Hondas) you always check valve lash always, and adjust where needed.

What a dumbass. Sorry for the rant, make sure you get it fixed up proper. If you can tow it to him, if not make sure he lets the motor cool down completely!!!!!!! Try and drop it off at the end of the day so it has over night to cool, valve lash must be set cold.

Yep.
cam out? Check and set clearances.
It is not a lifter. It is an incorrect clearance setting.

Update: Stopped by today , valve covers off . I'm thinking we're on the same page now. I had a long talk with him and showed him a post from 23Doctor where he said "Lash being .001 out of specs on JWT cams would cause some noise." He said he'll take measurements and I may need to have buckets for the exhaust side to meet spec. Buckets or shims I just want my truck running strong .

Hang in there she'll be done and you will not need another thing for her other than gas and tires and money for speeding tickets.

I just finished mine also and I have very little chatter and I checked the lash and it's in at .010 almost all the way around, granted I'm not done and need to do some more tweaking but ur going to get some chatter on the passenger side, rb told me to use Dino oil for 300 miles and then swap back to synthetic, took mine for a rip and damn!!!

only cost me about 100 bux in hobby shop time.

Thanks RB. All I need is a 13 second time slip and then I can focus on my retirement gift to myself......An LS1 powered 350z or Rx7 FD.(torn between the two)

I am seriously wanting to cam mine but I have no clue where to start, I live in louisiana and I would rather not drive all the way to Texas to get it done, but if I have to I will but want to find someone in la. I just wanna know how much money I'm looking at for everything to be done price of cams labor and tuned right? I have stock headers would I need to buy new ones i plan to get long tubes but was gonna hold off if I could. Someone told me they had an estimate just to install headers cams an tune it and it was 3200$ is tht right just for labor?

yeah it's close, depends where u take it honestly they book it at 18 hrs, which is far off, I broke 2 cam bracket bolts and I probably have about 16 hrs in it as I didnt work on it everyday, it's not too difficult to do, take ur time and don't try and finish it. headers takes about 6 hrs to do they are a royal pain in the ***. u have uprev?

Watt's please bro, do your research first. I had stuff sitting in my garage for a couple months on a shelf waiting for install. I thought I had a plan and slowly with more reading and bugging RB, Seymore and nightowl via PM I came to the realization I was'nt as close as I thought. I had headers , cams, exhaust setup , b-pipes all ready to go. Got uprev, sourced myself an 07 intake manifold and ordered up my traction bars. Tried to go slow as advised, put my headers and b-pipes on , got uprev installed and started tuning. Then I went into deep water and had my cams installed. Took the truck home , did my intake manifold and Airaid intake and fired it up . The sound of the valves just was'nt doin it for me so I started asking questions . Now the cams are back out and I'm shopping for valve buckets. Today I was informed that the clearances are all over the place on the intake and exhaust side with only 1 bucket being at the stock lash with the JWT cam set. So...........I'm looking at 31 buckets at somewhere between 18 and 29.00 each to get the lash set to spec. I'm gonna do it because I did it to myself. Just make sure you know what you're getting into. And 3200.00 is the right neigborhood, maybe a tad more to get it perfect. Good luck

Do it !! The only thing I'd add is an 07+ intake manifold since we're both out of gas on getting an FT90 kit. Also keep in mind that if you're like me, you're gonna want it lashed correctly and those valve buckets add up. I'm doin all 32 but you may slide by with only 16 . Good luck.

UPDATE: Today I made a futile attempt to source my valve buckets from the best source I could. I called Supertech , ready to make things happen and had my heart busted when they told me that they were expecting the next batch in approximately 3 weeks. I wanted the Supertech buckets because they were DLC coated. Called JWT and they don't carry them at all but recommended the OEM buckets. I went by the shop and checked out my stock buckets all lined up in a box in valve order and numbered. The little bastards showed almost zero evidence of wear even with 60k miles on my motor. So OEM it is........Now the dealer is saying it may take up to three days to get all the different sizes in. Everything should be back together by the end of next week.

I'm 99% sure we have the same buckets used in 350/370Zs and they come stock with a DLC coating, you might wanna look into that....You should call Nick Hunter @ 5523 motorsports and pick his brain !!! He is a GURU and is currently building a 650HP all motor VK...He installed my cams and we re-used my factory buckets with zero issues, and im running aggressive cams...

DO IT MAN!!!!! :redblob"

I'm planning on getting the S7/S2 Combo also!

It won't be for a few months still, but i'm super excited to see a lot of other TT Members getting Headered & Cammed up recently!!!!! :hat:

You've got almost all the supporting mods you need IMO!

I would suggest adding a Long Tru Cool LPD SR4588 Transmission Cooler like a lot of us have! There's a "How-To's" on it also!

You can take the it 1 step further by by-passing the OEM internal trans cooler in the bottom of the radiator.

Other than that you should be good to go for some JWT Cams!!!!!! :hi:

where is the best place to buy this tranny cooler

A bunch of TT Members, including me, got them @ D&E Performance Products! :)

They are really nice people & have excellent customer service!!!

Here's their #:
1-800-245-9754

Give 'em a call & tell them you need a Long Tu-Cool LPD (low pressure drop) SR4588 Trans Cooler!

Same issue with mine and S7/S2 cams, ordered 13 buckets just yesterday, intakes are fine but the exhausts are the issue, all were .015 and one .016. If you have to order one bucket, might as well look at all of them and shoot for the .011-.012 target then to start with. Called JWT, and yes they said you really need to be within the .010-.013 or it will rattle like a tank running. Another week and it will be done, typical 3-5 days to get the buckets.

We're gunning for. 011 across the board. I ordered all 32 a week and a half ago and all but 3 are here. Just got shipped from California on Monday so maybe by the end of this week or early next week. Mine sounded like a diesel they were so whacked out but I'll be doing a thread on my experience when I'm done that'll help other people who might think buying used cams to save a few dollars.

Great News Guys!!!!!!!

I can't wait to hear/see the results!!! :redblob"

No joke we might've. I seen some new ones on ebay but they were all the same part number. It hurt me that I couldn't get them at 10.00 each.

You can get the valve buckets WPC treated (search on here) or u can order the 350z HR DLC buckets. Courtesy nissan has them just gotta make sure u know what height to get and since u have the stock ones out already it shouldn't be an issue.

Do what firelife said, Nick Hunter is a VQ35 and VK56 specialist, the guy worked on Nissan grand am engines and is JWT go to guy.

Also run a thicker weight oil vs the 5w-30, a 5w-40 or 10w-40 will be fine. The S7s lobes are like spears on a stick.

That's good to know your stock buckets at 60k show no wear tho.

I would have like to done the DLC coating on mine too, wish I had prepared a little better on time, but still you have to get into it and have them in once to see where you are with the lash to start with, then wait that week or so to get them. I have bumped up my viscosity in mine now also, have been using 15W-50 Dominator from Amsoil in it now for higher sheer strength and more zinc for better protection also. Those S7's are a spear on a stick, no doubt, just wish they had done a better job of the base lobe radius when they made them, all exhaust I have found are as loose as a fat chicks hooters in the wind when it comes to the lash, mine are at the max lash spec right now with JWT's and weren't far off from that stock. The good thing is, for folks in the future to plan extra time and go with the DLC or the others if you prefer, they will help, expecially with the aggressive ramps on the JWT cams.

We need a Titan cam bucket repository for those that need buckets on a cam install. That way folks like the rest of us can recoup some of the bucket cash flow that goes out. Can get them quicker if someone wants to do that. Hell I would even do that. Cam bucket salvage yard. I got a micrometer and can measure them to ensure they were in spec still, then oil bag em and be good to go.

That would be good to have a thread where we could list which heights we had and we can all agree on a price up front. Maybe also a pre req. is pics of the buckets and zip code. I think when folks that need them realize they're 18.00 each and it might take a minute from the manufacturer they'll appreciate the gesture.

If you were gonna buy some to have if you couldnt swap them all around it might be .012-.013??? But a thread for those with used and used tappets would be nice. Also noting which ones were tight or needed replacing.

Mine were tight on cylinder 4/6 S2/S2 combo.

That's why I only need 13, some could swap from one to the other and make them still in spec, especially since they all were out on the exhaust side and a couple intakes can go there and be okay. One of the biggest problems would be that those that want some of what they need, have to ensure that is what they need. Not doing any calculation of what you need for the buckets, just the N# is all you need to get the right ones and would have to check every one to make sure it was indeed that size bucket to start with. Junk ones we would just toss, or better yet, if it is bad from looking at it, obviously don't try and push it off to someone else. If someone wants to order the DLC's for me and cover that cost I will throw all the ones I have into the repository LOL, you can have whatever money comes out if someone needs em LOL. I can give ya the numbers that I need. IN another note, they have to be in spec for height and diameter, so whoever needed some would need to provide both sets of info so that you didn't have some tight or loose ones like RB had.

As for what Randy said also, be good to have a single sticky thread of what peoples experiences were with installation as to the fitment of the buckets prior to removal and all the specs stock that were checked and after install before correction. Might show a trend we don't know about.

I just posted the Service manual specs for my year 06, and not sure if VVT is different for other years, but a good comparison. The buckets are in increments of .0008 in thickness, and on the first page is the diameter tolerances, and also lifter bore diameter specs are there too.

Once again, this is from the 06 service manual, it is up to you to determine if they apply to your year of Titan for specifications. I have a bunch of years manuals here but don't have them all, so that is up to you on the specs that you will need and ensure they are correct for your year.
