K&N Problems

Today I went down to my dealership to check on the status of some parts I had ordered under waranty. While I was waiting I started shooting the breeze with the service manager and the topic of airfilters came up. He informed me that he has had several Titan's come in with blown engines because the oil from the K&N airfilters had screwed up a sensor, which changed the mixture, which caused too much back pressure and eventualy destroyed the engine. He also told me that the problem is not covered under waranty because it is at the fault of the after market filter. I have been running K&N filters in my vehicles, including my current 05 Titan, for years and never had heard about this problem. Is there anyone out there than can back up this claim?

I've heard that the oil get's in the mass air flow sensor, and causes problems so people have gone with the AEM dry air filter no more oil.

do a search of the forums you'll find it

From their website. K&N FAQ's

...K&N takes seriously any claim that one of its products is incompatible with its designated application or can damage or cause the malfunction of any automotive component. Such claims are thoroughly investigated and, when appropriate, testing is undertaken to determine their merit...

Will the use of a K&N filter void my factory warranty?

It is against the law for a manufacturer to require the use of a specific brand of air filter unless it provides a replacement air filter, free of charge, under the terms of the warranty. For a more thorough discussion of this law known as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty, see our Vehicle Warranty Section of our Air Filter Facts page. Also see our Letter Regarding Vehicle Warranty and K&N Replacement Filters.

Yea law requires that a manufacturer proves that whatever after market part you added was the cause of such a failure. I don't know, but I would guess that it would be really damn hard to prove something like molecules of oil causing an engine to blow up.

K&N would have been out of business a long time ago if they caused such problems. They also wouldn't have such a good reputation.

K&N does not put oil on the inside of the filter, and the filter gauze prevents oil from going through it, even if it did, it would atomize the amounts, making them harmless.

There are cleaning/oiling kits you can buy to do what you need to do...Read the instructions first... You can buy them at any autoparts store...Good luck..
