Newbie - Considering a Titan - ?'s

I'm considering selling my '98 12v Dodge diesel; looking to get a used half-ton gasser 4-dr crew cab - looking at the Nissan Titan along with Ford, Chevy / GMC, Toyota, and Dodge.

Looking at models between 2008-2011; probably 2wd.
Mainly a daily driver; married and two kids, 10 & 13.
Light to moderate towing: Double trailer PWC's to nearby lake and once a year of 24' pontoon for cleaning and maintenance (boat kept in slip).

What are some concerns to be aware regarding the Titan?

Initial Google search is that older models had rear differential problems but this was corrected in '08, revised has a finned differential cover. Yes? No?

Fuel mileage is worse than the others. What real world #'s are ya'll seeing?

How's the longevity of the Titan? Cost of ownership?

Anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks,
Steve

The usual
Manifold cracking
Radiator cracking
The mpg's are bad I think I can manage 11 on a good day of mixed driving before my mods.
Get a big tow truck just invade you ever need to tow.

Overall this truck is reliable especially in the later years.

Downsides:
Older design
Bad mpg
Not the best towing capacity (non towing compared to recent trucks)
Cracking manifold
Cracking radiator

Upsides:
The best truck you'll ever own
Very powerful
Even though it's older in design, it is an absolute beauty
There aren't a lot of them.
Can easily last 200k + miles with correct maintenance.
Built here in the US giving us Ameicans jobs

Can't comment on the cost of maintenance since I really haven't had anything bad happen to my truck other than someone hitting the back left quarter panel. And have only had 1 oil change and I don't remember how much I paid.

If you get anything else I would suggest them Chevys or GMC's. That's what I kinda wish I got.. Haha but I do love this truck but I've always been a chevy fan

Real world gas mileage isn't much different than the others. I get better mpg than I did with my Dakota.

My 11 averages between 15-16 mpgs highway doing 75. That's with heavy 33/12.5-18 toyo mudders. Can't complain too bad about that it's a truck.
That's with the occasional burst over 90 passing.

Hey I'm a newbie too and used to have the same questions. Everyone beats up on the Titan for it's fuel mileage but EPA estimated fuel mileage and real world measured mileage always vary considerably. My '09 Silverado 2WD with cylinder deactivation (AFM) had the 5.3 motor and the best I could get was 18mpg at 65mph (keep in mind I bought it new and sold at only 30k miles so it was in good shape). My 2013 Titan SV 2wd CC measured 16mpg at 65mph. So at a difference of only 2mpg it was worth it for me to get the Titan for it's huge power/transmission/handling/reliability advantage. (BTW the power looks close on paper but drive it and you'll agree that the Titan wins it hands down; towing as well). Even if you don't like the difference in mpg's you have to consider how many times other brands will be at the shop for repairs. I bought the Silverado new and it was in the shop for warranty repairs 7 times before it turned 25k miles, so that became a cost of time and inconvenience. Only drawback to buying used is Titans are not abundant so finding a used one at the right price/color/mileage/trimlevel can take a couple of months.

Everyone is pretty much hitting the nail on the head. The difference maker for me was that the Titan is reviewed well, and a cheaper truck to begin with. An equally equiped Tundra, F150, etc is going to cost a good bit more in most cases. So factor that in with gas and all that over the life of the vehicle. I get 14 mpg with a 3 mile city commute to work, the truck can't even get warmed up. Interstate doing 65-75 I get 15-16 and if I cruise 55 I see 18-19 on the flat, hills maybe 17

The manifold/cat failures have been around since the first gen Titans, and carry over to the present ones. ( my 2011 SV lost the passenger side cat with only 65,000 km on it). The good news is that there is an extended warranty for 8 years/80,000 miles (130,000 km) on the components, so you'd be better off buying a newer one. Other than that, they are a good looking, fire breathing kick as$ truck!

Also if you end up with a cracked manifold or a rear diff that goes out, you can replace the manifolds with JBA's and some Cajun Bpipes for less than the OEM ones and end up with more power and they will last for a loooooong time. The differential can be replaced with a true trac, again for less money than an oem and will last forever (well almost). Most guys don't ever have issues, but some have had both issues pop up. Real wolrd MPG is about 12 city and 16-18 highway depends on the mods you put on it. Also if your going to be towing a big boat, look for the 3.36 gears, that will get you up to about 9200 pounds vs the 7200 for 2.94 gears

Well you wont get gas mileage, I was told to think of it as smiles per gallon. The newer titans have some flaw but my 08 hasnt had any mandatory fixes that were expensive at 65k. However my mod addiction has become uncontrollable. :)
I love my titan though and enjoy the guys on this forum. Wouldnt trade it for another truck.
