Wife and I are considering a used 2020 Nissan Armada for our family vehicle. We're looking at several ex-rental examples with 60-70,000 miles. Some research tells me that the VK56VD has problems with catalytic converter contamination working its way back into the cylinders leading to catastrophic failure, as well as cooling system and timing chain problems. Separately, on this forum I've read about several Titans needing their 5.6s replaced due to knock.

Is there any consensus on the prevalence of these problems? Are there model years that are more likely to suffer from them? Wife and I like the Armada, but reading about these problems make me want to run.

it sounds like its very common but this is a forum where people generally come to complain and fix problems so you have to think about that. and as along as its not past 5 years or 100k, its still on the powertrain warranty so you still go some time on them.

i know nothing about timing chain trouble though, i can't help on that. i have heard of cats being sucked back in but if it happens on this engine, it has to happen on all manufacturer engines since a reciprocating engine works the same, no matter who makes them. and the cooling system issue, are you asking about the radiator leaking and contaminating the transmission? if so, don;t go to the toyota forums because they have the same issue but it seems alot worse in their vehicles because it happens on all their rear wheel drive models, per their forums. i researched rwd toyota trucks and suvs a bunch prior to getting a titan.

my truck got the engine replaced at 35k, i think was the mileage. not from knock, form a one off issue no one else has had. nissan gave me a loaner the whole time they had it and since i got my truck back, almost two years ago, its been perfect. i have looked at other trucks, considering trading it off but its just to dang good a deal of a truck to get rid of for a new huge payment on another manufacturer that has the same, and sometimes worse issues.

i love the f150 but they are so expensive and the engines just don't have the power the nissan 5.6 does in actual open road usage. they look good on paper but in actual test drives, highway passing was terrible in 2.7, 3.5, and 5.0 f150s versus the titan. so, i kep my good ol 2017 titan and still am driving it.

I hear you on the forums reflecting an outsized frequency of problems. Thanks for the response!

I wouldn’t worry about the 5.6 engine problems that peeps complain be out here. I’ve owned a Titan since 2007 and got my 2nd gen 2018 SV in 2020. My best friend owns a 2019 and I’ve never even head off the knock issue until here. The armada has 5y/100k powertrain and some were approved for 7y/100k powertrain. I’ve never had a warranty issue Nissan denied and wouldn’t hesitate to buy another Nissan.

We were told #7 has piston slap, the tech said it sounds bad, and they replace the engine if its on warranty. He said if not on warranty its not an issue it just sounds bad, said it wouldn't fail just makes noise so we are trusting him cause what else do you do, no filings or metallics yet in oil so fingers crossed hes right
