Preventing Sliding Bed Extender Theft

I could of sworn that I read a post on here a few months ago about preventing sliding bed extender theft. I did a search and could not find what I was looking for. Has anyone thought of a good method to prevent bed extender theft?

To anyone considering the bed extender: I am really glad I got the sliding bed extender, I was not so sure about getting it, but it has already proven to be very handy.

I thought maybe using a piece of flexible cable with eyes in each end and a lock to secure it to one of the bed tie downs (not the rail mounted cleats) might work. Someone could probably still jerk it out but would only tear it up doing so. Another thing you might do is mount the end stops for the rails on the either side of the the rail mount for the sliding bed extender and and position against the locked tailgate so it can't be raised and lifted out.

Right now, mine is left at home unless I know I need it.

You might not be able to "slide" it out with the tailgate locked, but somebody could still lift the extender up and out of the bed.

I use a cable lock on the bed-mounted cleat.

I pretty sure i tried and with the tail gate closed/locked you would have to break the extendor to get it out. With the tail gate closed you can't pivot it to the point of it coming off.l

You can move it. Then lift it out. I locked my gate when I had it in there, no issues. I have the divider in there now. I like it cause it flips up to protect my rear window when hauling stuff.

Been talked about before in this post http://www.titantalk.com/showthread.php?t=10154&highlight=bed+extender

I have a Python cinching cable lock bought at Wal-mart, that I use to tie the extender to one of the tie downs in my bed. Technically, somebody could unbolt the tie downs, but I am only hoping to make it enough of a pain in the *** so they will move on. If somebody really wants something they can get it. Just ask my wife.

w/ the tail gate lock you can slide the extender forward the when it clears the tail gate you lift up and take home. W/out the mounts of course :)

That's why I suggested putting end stops on either side of the rail mount for the sliding extender. Should have said both sides of the rail mount. I have two extra ones (I guess for the bottom rails) that came with mine.

without reading all the previous replies....I use my extender but i dont worryabout sliding it.....if you do want to keep sliding it then dont read my post any further...however:

place the extender brackets into the channel at the desired location....you want to be able to rotate the extender when gate is open but not rotate it when the gate is closed..

then I intalled the channel end cap thingys (official term i think) the ones that require the cheesy little wrench to install...these thingys are used to keep items that are in the bottom channel from sliding out of the channels...i put one in front and one behind each extender bracket and tighten...unless someone has a wrench handy, they will not be able to slide the extender in to rotate the extender for easy lift off...

although you can lock the tailgate even in the open position to secure the straps...it only takes a razor blade to cut the straps and lift off the extender..so when not in use, rotate the extender and close the gate and then lock it.

So, although the extender can't slide toward the front of the bed (which actually is no big deal since the wheels wells are in the way most of the time, this seems to work pretty good.

I AM working on a way to lock the extender by possibly welding a nut to the bracketry and using a bolt with a small pad lock or small cable, to help keep the honest people honest and prevent the unauthorized rotation of the extender...i will post any success' or failures.

I find the sliding extender to be a pain vs the fixed style. It's hard to put it on when MX bikes are in the back, since it has to be vertical to slide into the mounts. Can't get it vertical with the bikes because it hits the silencer and fender. I think I'm just going to grind the pivots a bit so it can slide in at an angle. Not really worried about someone taking it.
