Will getting a new rear axel assembly involve getting a new U-joint too? I'm assuming thats what it's called. The part where the drive shaft connects to the diff.

I ask because of a new rear end being put in for a clunk between drive and reverse or visa versa. Don't wanna go through a whole rear end swap if it's just gonna be a bad U-joint and the old one will be thrown on the new rear end.

Complete thread from Tues.

I think they will just unbolt the flange yoke and use the old one. In an ideal world, they mark the position of the flange yoke and put it back in the same orientation.

The service manual says the "journal axial play" should be less than .02 mm (which requires a tech with precision hands, as they test this by flopping it back and forth w/o any measuring device), or the propeller shaft assembly gets replaced. I think this pertains to the 4WD drive shaft.

Later it goes on to discuss adjusting axial play by "select snap rings that will provide the specified play in an axial direction of the journal". I think that is only applicable to the 2WD drive shaft with the center bearing.

I follow the 1st paragraph.

The second one is pretty understandable.

The 3rd,.....well..., all I'm hearing is that sound that the big board on Jepordy makes when they fill in all the squares for the 1st time. "beep boop beep boop beep boop".

Not trying to be a sart a**. It's me not you.

Yeah, it might be interesting to ask the dealer for a peek at his precision thickness snap ring assortment. The are also supposed to have an assortment of precision thickness lifters to adjust valve clearances.

Just got off the phone with the service manager. Was checking with him about my concerns with the rear end swap they will do next week if it gets here then. I told him, "what if it's just the u-joint and not the diff? You could go to all this trouble and I'd still have a clunk".

He said he has seen a few that had the clunk and that because there was so much play in the driveshaft/u-joint/diff area, the thing just snapped and was spinning freely. He said the only rear he has replaced more than once is a rear that was broke early (04) and was replaced with the same old one like I have now. He said once the gentleman got the updated diff he has had no problems. I explained I manually tested for drive shaft play and only got about an inch or two and he said thats too much and that it would get worse till it failed. He said it is a 3 to 4 hour job. It comes all pre-assembled and will not be a huge deal. Take this all with a grain of salt I guess.

I am still driving my truck as normal as of now. I only have problems with a clunk noise from drive to reverse or the other way around. When this happens mine can be fairly loud sometimes, other times barely noticable.

If this works, great. If not, Hello 06/07 Frontier, or Titan, or Pathy etc.....
