I am going to be purchasing satellite and without a doubt am going with sirius. my question is i want to go with the sportster because it can be removed from the truck and played in boom box can i have it hooked up and still use the steering mounted controls? Is it hard to hook up into my truck? i have the 6 disc changer (non RF). any help would be appreciated.

You won't be able to control the Sirius with steering wheel controls.

Since you are retaining the factory stereo, you will have to use the FM Modulator that comes in the kit. You will select an unoccupied FM frequency to transmit the Sirius to.

Or, if you have an auxilliary input, you could just patch it in that way. However, you may have to get a line driver to increase the level of the Sirius.

When I get Sirius, I will just hook it up using the auxilliary input on my Alpine HU.....it will be shared with my MP3 player.

I have the Sportster replay and love it. Great little unit. I also got the boombox for it and it's real handy. Installation isn't bad. Hardest part is running the antenna but that is easy. I just ran mine under the dashboard and under the drivers side sill plate, up behind the trim and under the headliner and out the 3rd brake light. I got the $4.99 male to male stereo headphone cable and run it off the auxilaary jack. Absolutely no volume problems running it this way. It's actually a bit louder than the CD player. To make the install clean I popped the radio faceplate off and unscrewed the auxillary jack from it and I ran the cable behind the plate. I then tucked all the wires back under the plate and popped it back in. It doesn't crimp the wires too bad and it hides everything without drilling holes. The only wires you can see is a tiny bit if the power plug down by the power outlet and the wires up top were they go under the faceplate but only if you look from behind the unit. I will post a few pics of my install. Oh I used the mounting bracket it cam from in the nav spot on the dash.

Green T thanks for all the help! And the install pics are sweet a**. What is the plug in the 12v on the right for? thanks

The plug is the power source for the Sirius reciever. The suction cup actually sticks pretty darn well. I just cleaned the plastic real good and wet the suction cup.

Thanks for the compliments guys. The Sportster actually matches the finish on the dash nearly perfectly. The only thing I dont like is it lights blue. The older unit lit amber which would have been a much better match although it doesn't have the replay feature.

green T where did you get that power adapter and do i need it? how does the system get powered batteries or do they wire it into the electronics in the truck?

I installed mine in front of the center console . You cant see any wires and i hard wired it to the power adapter and aux input, all behind the dash.Changing stations is real easy , your hand is right there while your elbow is on the armrest ( if you have the captian chairs ).

how do you wire it to the power adapter?

The reciever comes with the power adapter. If you dont like the look you can hardwire it to either the power adapter behind the faceplate or from any other source that gets power only when the key is on. Personally the plug and 2 inches of wire you can barely see doesn't bother me so I just left it that way. One day if I'm feeling less than lazy I will hardwire it. In the location I have it it is very easy to see and pretty easy to reach as well. Plus it has a remote. I would think looking at or fiddling with it in the console would be distracting.

Cool to see all the different ways people have mounted them. I made two holes in the dash and little rubber mat, dropped the lines down and hard mounted my Sirius receiver. I got two cradles with this reciever so I can easily move it from my Titan to my work van. This is an Audiovox Audiovox SIRPNP3 reciever... Not a name brand I would typically choose, but it got great reviews and the orangle lighting matches the Titan dash very well. The picture is a little blurry because I tried to capture that in low light.

well things have changed here. the place that i wanted to do the install said that they will no longer do it since i didn't buy it there and the guy who was going to do it no longer works there. So now my buddy and i both have to do the install by ourselves. He is very mechanically inclined unlike myself so i am not too worried. I have another question. How do i run the cable and how do i get the faceplate off (screws for it just pops off)?

Installed XACT SIRIUS receiver in '04 TITAN. Unit only cost $40-$60 with home kit. Bought additional antenna $25 or so to leave one in home as well as truck.

Disassembled the suction mount and screw, drilled a hole in the knockout below air vent to locate mounting clip. Ran antenna thru rear cab tail light, attached magnetic antenna to roof and applied adhesive backed rubber protective strip. Ran wire thru/behind trim, down along bottom door edge trim, under dash and thru small gap in console. Power just plugs in outlet. Unit is out of the way but easy to read. Use FM modulator thru stereo as it has a higher gain than using hard wired output to aux plug (which also works). Amber display even matches factory display.

Could probably spend a little more time hiding wires, but spent probably 30 min with install after I located socket to loosen 3rd light nuts. Only had to loosen (2) interior fasteners and used 2-3 tie wraps under dash to secure antenna wire. Very easy to take out and use indoors. Would not work if you have 4WD as I think the switch is mounted in that knockout position. Got unit at SAM's.

Good luck!

i would be interested to know how you hid the wires

you took off the face plate and tucked the wires in then put the plate back on?

how hard was it to run the antenna there?
also was it long enough?
or did you have to buy more

Antenna was VERY easy to run from what I thought it would be. Antenna came with 20' or so length (more than enough). All you have to do is pop out the plugs in rear headliner to get to rear cab 3rd brake light nuts. Rmv nuts, feed connector end from outside thru cab. There is a rubber/foam gasket under light and the coax wire is TINY, but I did put a dab of clear silicone around where wire went under gasket. Re-install light, push coax thru headliner over to driver side of rear pillar. Loosen trim of rear pillar just enought to get wire down to edge trim on floor (requires pulling out/loosening 2 push type trim retainers). Once wire is down on floor, the coax is so small you can push the wire under the edge of the trim without removing it. run wire up under dash and tie wrap to convenient structure/cable and route around back side of console to your location. I ran the wire thru a small gap in console trim by driver such that I can push wire back into console to conceal if I need to, with only coax connector exposed to keep wire from going completely into console. Good luck.

All I have to say is.....XM is so much better than Sirius. I've had both and can tell you from Xperience....Sirius is crap....hell, look at the stock of both companies. That should tell you something. O&A are 10 times better than Howard anyways. XM202 rules!!!! Plus, look at the size and and capability of an XM receiver vs that of anything Sirius says is comparitable. My O2 cents anyway.

To each his own...do not know that much about either to be honest as my main goal was to get some decent music on long trips that did not fade from the good tunes to the local shop and swap in BFE. I'm sure both will fill the bill...Howard is just a passing curiosity for me anyway and can only take so much of his banter....50's 60's 70's 80's rock too good to waste time on talk shows anyway...happy listening.

how did you hardwire ur reciever. I would like to do that and i have seen some pictures from greent T and TOK but i would like to see others.

I have XM, but I think this thread is more about installation.

I did mine by myself, which means it's the non-technical audiophite way!

I have mine plugged in through the AUX input, and the sound is great. Not perfect, but not all chopped up like the FM modulation way.

As for location, I simply took a clip that came with the kit, hooked it on the back and clipped the unit onto the vent just above the 4X4 switch.

For power, I plugged it into the pass. side outlet, so that it shuts off when the truck does.

I stuck the antenna up in the corner of the dash, and ran the wires down under the glove box-can hardly tell. Reception wise-it does terrific, unless I get within 5 feet or so of a building.

All wires are tucked an hidden as well as can be expected. As for access, it's right in front of me, literally, so it's easy to change stations. Maybe at some point when I'm confortable putting holes in the truck, I'll make it more permanent looking, who know's.
