Rear axle gear confusion

I've been reading some posts from folks who were trying to determine what gearing they have in their rear axles; and I am now, myself, wondering what the deal is with my '05 SE 4x4 CC. The truck has the Big Tow package. I retained the information/pricing sheet that was on the window when I bought the truck new; and, along with all the other items listed for the Big Tow package, it specifically states "LOWER FINAL GEAR RATIO" as one of the features -- which, I assumed, meant that I was running with close to a 3.36 rear end. Since I tow a 7200 lb. travel trailer, I obviously need the lower gearing. However, when I looked at the door jamb sticker inside the driver's side door, it shows the axle code as CC29. According to another forum member, this means that I'm running with around 2.94 gears (the code on the door jamb sticker evidently would've shown code CC33 if I had the higher-ratio rear end). So, which rear end do I actually have, and which sticker do I believe? Do they build Big Tow Titans with higher-gear rear ends? I can't find (or maybe don't know where to look for) any codes stamped on the rear axle or diff. housing that tell me anything. Can anyone tell me what to look for? I've also heard that the VIN can somehow be used to make this determination? Anybody know how that can be done?

Relax.....You're fine, the door sticker code is mis-interputed...Mine says C29, and I have the lower gears...

The VIN is useless for rear end ratio....

On my '06 XE non-tow it says CC29 on the door sticker. I know for a fact I have 2.937 gears. Makes sense since 2 and 9 are the first characters in my ratio.
Yes it certainly seems logical that CC29=2.94 and CC33=3.357, but it has been shown by a number of members that it is not always the case.

Just look on the rear axle, there will be a sticker that says either 2.9 or 3.36.

What he said. Just crawl underneath the truck and look on the rear axle, close to where the driveshaft connects to the differential. There should be a sticker showing the build date, along with the gearing.

I have the tow pkg, but regular mirrors ??? how does the temp gauge looks like?
You should have the tow mirrors(XE models w/tow did NOT come with big mirrors, all other models did...), did you buy the truck used?
Just because you have a hitch, that doesn't mean you have the tow package.
On 04'-07' Titans, ALL had trans gauge if they had the tow package, later Titans had the gauge no matter what.

You'll know if you have the gauge, it's the only one that's NOT oil pressure, coolant temp, or battery charge...

Here is a problem that's come up quite a bit....

People are buying used Titans and from a dealer who is telling them "Oh yeah, its all set to tow, has the hitch and 7 pin trailer connector..."when buyers are asking about the tow package. In reality, all that happened was the dealer bolted on the factory hitch and connector, but the most important part of the package the gears are Non tow...

If you don't know what to look for, you buy a Titan to tow with and think you have the tow package because the dealer is a a-hole....

I was one of the confused one's.
As mentioned before, going by a build sheet from the VIN is useless, dealerships are useless, Nissan themselves are useless and the door jamb tag is useless.
Pretty much if you don't know, the tag on the pinion housing is damaged or missing and you have no paperwork, other than physically turning the driveshaft or disassembling the rear end and counting teeth, you can't know for sure.

Sounds like I was one of them... It has the hitch and 7 pin trailer connector, but it doesn't have a temp gauge, and "most important" the gears...
Want a set of Tow gears?....you live in So Cal....:eyebrow:

but don't forget the Off-Road package gives you the 3.36 gears...

YES!....good add to this thread....If you have white Rancho shocks all around, good chance you have the O/Road package...

Gary what are your RPM's around in 5th gear at highway speeds? If you are pushing 2k at 70mph+ chances are you have 3.36 gears.

granted this only works for stock tire sizes

Gary,

I think your best and safest bet, as mentioned here, is to climb under the truck and look at the labeling itself. That way you can be sure.

I can tell you that if you do indeed have the BigTow package, and get some bags/springs/Roadmaster Active Suspension, and a WD-hitch that the truck should tow 7200 lbs without any issues. I recently pulled that much (a bit more) like it wasn't even there with the BigTow package.

I have a 04 SE CC 4x4 OR, in the color Sedona with tow mirrors, trans guage (has the pic of a gear in it, for the guy earlier wondering what it looked like), and big tow package. My door sticker says CC33 under "AXLE". I run around 2k rpms by the factory tach in 5th gear running 70mph.

The trans temp guage on an '04 is 100% BT gears.

Beautiful truck, BTW. How do you like your Firestones? I am looking for a replacement for the BFG's soon.

FYI...My door sticker has my rear axle code as C29...It's a big tow 3.357 gear....

I remembered to look at mine this morning and it says CC33 under axle.

I do believe the Tow Mode button is standard on all models and the tranny temp gauge became standard on a certain year, Do you have the tow mirrors? Does your rear differential still have the little white label that states the gear ratio?
