Starter or ignition?

Starting problems periodically! Sometimes when ignition button is pushed nothing happens, just a light click. Battery is good, all electrical is working. I have had it at Nissan for a week and they cannot get it to fail. They drove it and then parked it and it cranks everytime. Therefore the technician cannot give a diagnosis unless it fails. Is there not a way to test the starter and the ignition start button to see where the problem is? I don’t want to replace a starter unless we know for sure that is the problem. They want me to drive it until it fails and then have it towed in. There has to be a way to troubleshoot this issue. Has anyone had this problem, if so what was the solution?

You could document the issue by religiously video recording each and every start-up. Bound to catch it a few times. Ask them if they will accept that. I was already way past warranty when my truck started the intermittent one-click thing. The issue can go on for years before it finally craps out for good. That’s no good for you since it would be covered now. There are lots of threads on this and it’s usually the starter. Of course each situation is different so I’m not saying it’s the same for you. But my experience was a bad starter and I looked at the intermittent clicking as the truck warning me to fix it before it left me stranded somewhere. Nissan uses the same or very similar starter in other vehicles and the same one-click thing is a reported problem.

Its probably the starter, the solenoid gets a bunch of black spots on it causing high resistance in the solenoid, thus the starter does not have enough power to turn the engine. You can test the starter, however, on our titans its under the intake manifold, so getting to the wiring for electrical checks is a pain. When I checked power to my starter (had same issue you do) I found that when it happened, I only had like 9 volts on the power wire.

I am having the same issue. Eventually the truck wouldn’t start any longer. I’m just glad it died in my driveway. So I took the starter out and took it to a local guy to check and rebuild. While I was waiting I bought a TRQ starter on Amazon because it was 113 dollars instead of over 400 at any parts store or 250 for the ac delco at rock auto. when the TRQ came in i installed it on the truck put everything back together and tried to crank. It tried to turn over a few times but wouldn’t and then I noticed that it was smoking and an electric burn smell. So pulled the starter back out and sent it back. Chalked it up to the starter was cheap and failed. Back to the local guy who rebuilt the stock starter well and I installed it. It was trying to start it again and noticed the same smoking and burning again. I’m guessing I may have a wire rubbing somewhere and shorting out causing the starter solenoids to burn up. Next step is to take the stock starter back for a second rebuild and inspect the wiring harness for any chafing.
