Steering is stripped out?

Took the T into Firestone to get an alignment done today and I got a call back saying the alignment can't be done because the steering wheel had too much play in it and apparently the steering is stripped out for them to do any kind of alignment. Does this mean I will be needing to replace the steering rack? This sounds expensive...

Might be the bushings being worn out. Do you here any weird noises when turning?? have someone turn the wheel while watch the R&P to see if it is moving, if it is replace the bushings.

Too late.... Picked it up from Firestone, I get back in the truck. The guy had no clue what was wrong because the tech who worked on my truck had already left. I drive off and it felt much better handling but my steering wheel was completely upside down. Like they didn't bother to line the steering up. I get back on to campus to get some work done and I hear a pop and I lose all steering completely... FML.

Coming soon: A steering rack replacement thread. The gauntlet has been thrown.

What???

This doesn't even make sense. Did the joint just pop off? Look through the drivers wheel well in there and check that out. I don't think you would 100% lose steering unless something just came loose.

Tried calling Firestone three times today because the service tech told me to call them in the morning but everytime I couldn't get a hold of them. I don't even think it's worth fighting Firestone over this since my steering rack was already worn.

I just wanna install my headers and exhaust and not have to mess with this crap. Oh well.

It broke the spiral cable and that set off the air bag light.

Search this site for it.
Do not be afraid, but be sure to disconnect the battery first.

No you aren't.
Just use your brain. I happen to know you have one.
It's some of the other people on this site I have to worry about. Their posts are written like their momma put them in a paint shaker when they were little.

Because I drove it home since apparently the "steering was stripped" so I wasn't going to just leave it there and on my way home I lost steering and apparently now all functionality out of my steering wheel.

Ah.... I'm going to get so hosed on this one, I can see it. I better just bend over right now.
