flowmaster 40 si/so here...

I hate the raspy sputtering sound. I gotta get the wife to rev it up for me today. usually I'm driving and can hear it mostly when I let off the gas and the rpms drop. I'll try it today and see. I've been reading as much as I could and think an X-pipe or H-pipe may help. I want as much pulling power as I can get though so don't want to loose any. I have 35"s and when we find our horse on the 300 acres that he's on. we'll probably start towing him around so the kid can ride him... so horse trailer + 35"s - gearing = probably not too much fun  . From Papa_Ds review on his X-pipe either the tires in the bed or the X-pipe caused a loss in 0-60 time :( I'm sure the tires have something to do with it. but I just need to know I'm not gonna loose pulling power.. or I suppose I'll just pull it out if it doesn't work

i just threw on dual FM delta 40's on my 08 CC. they are both mounted at equal lengths from the cats, about 48".i think the equal lengths helped even exhaust flow. i got no ping'n or popp'n there is cab resonance though,at low rpm, but i don't mind .throttle response improved greatly and average mpg is now 16.0. my truck gets moving quicker, pulls harder on the top,and sounds nice too!!that's just my quick $0.02 thanks for all of yours.......

Here is a picture of the x-pipe location. The only thing I regret is that I didn't buy a stainless x-pipe and this will probably rust out in a few years, but I wanted to make sure it would get rid of the popping before I dropped a ton of money and still have the problem.

I sent an email to Magnaflow asking about the odd sound. Here is their response:

Sorry that you are having trouble with this muffler. But I haven’t ever heard of this before. If there are people complaining about it they haven’t said anything to us well up until now? If it were I would be using a 5x11x22 inch body muffler. This muffler will give you a deep basey tone but you wont hear it inside the cab as much.

Thank You for contacting Magnaflow

If anybody else wants to send Magnaflow an email asking about this sound send me a PM and I'll give you the email of the Magnaflow guy that responded to me.

Nice thats what im looking for, i called the shop where i have all my exhaust work (they welded in the muffler) and he said anywhere from 30-50 to add an h-pipe or 100.00 for a x-pipe so later on this month when i get up some cash i am gonna go have the h-pipe put in so i wil let you know how it turns out.

I tried contacting them through the email the website had listed, which sent me an automated response with another email address to contact. I sent a lengthy email explaining the problem and asked them for any way of correcting it or why we were all having this problem. The muffler shop I used thought it might of been a bad muffler. But I got NO response from Magnaflow whatsoever.

H PIPE WILL NOT GET RID OF IT!!!!!! I know from experience. So get the X pipe since two of the forum members here have had luck.

Would love a little "thanks" :redblob":)

Post the contact info. and we can all send an email. Or I think it would be better for both them and probably us if you email them again and copy this thread.

I'm not comfortable with publicly posting his email address. But I did send him a link to this thread.

I have read the posts. However this is a universal muffler and if you were to call here would have suggested you go with a larger body muffler. Our kits come with a 5x8x24” body muffler and I have personally heard this on the truck that we used for R&D and it sounds very deep and wicked. I understand that you are frustrated but this is only a universal application. Here is the kit and this is the muffler that we use in the kit. I just went in on a ride with the guy who works here and I didn’t hear the noise that you are describing. You might need to go with a larger muffler to cut down on that noise.

So what they're saying is that the 18" muffler isn't the right one for our truck. Is that the way you guys read it? And the solution is to purchase the cat back system with the 22" muffler. Ouch! It no longer becomes an inexpensive performance mod.

Man, I like the sound of the 18" muffler most of the time. But the drone is a killer. From 61 to 64 MPH it peaks and becomes a source of a throbbing headache. The drone is gone by 70 MPH. If the solution really is to put in the cat back system then before I do that I might try out the x-pipe.

I have the 22" muffler and still have the pop. I like the sound except under WOT when the pop occurs.

titanmike, how long ago did you install your 22" magnaflow muffler? I'm just trying to see if there is a timeframe correlation or not. Mine was purchased about 3 months ago. Thanks for your feedback that the 22" has the same sound.

Its not drone we are talking about getting rid of, actually my 14" muffler has no drone in the cab at all compared to my buddies f-150 with flowmasters, its the crappy pinging popping sound from the exhaust outside especially when the rear window is down and you floor it. it sounds like a 64 impala with those crappy glass packs when they rev it or begin to decelerate and it begins to pop and crackle. it sounds good at start up and putting around town but its embarassing to hit the throttle, i read guys have tried to get rid of this noise not drone by cutting off the tailpipe closer to the muffler but with no success, mine is actually cut right after the hanger so now you cant see the tip and it kinda faces down :bandit:

I have both problems. But my ping/pop is more like the playing cards on bicycle spokes sound. But I do understand what you mean by the ping/pop. Mine isn't that bad.

I think that because you have the 18" i notice people like me with the 14" have more of the popping sound, and people with the 18" seem to have inside cabin drone.

The only problem with this statment is that there seems to be a miss communication. I read about all the exhaust that guys were putting on their Titans and I came to the conclusion to buy magnaflow. I called them before I purchased last year and the guy I spoke with told me which muffler to get. So I went down to the local muffler shop and had them put on the exact model and even showed me the sealed box before he put it on. And I've been regreting it ever since. All I want is a nice deep sound on the outside without the fart rumble A.K.A. popping sound, bicycle card noise and without drone on the inside. So with this said does Magnaflow make the kind of exhasut I'm looking for and if so which exact model do I need??? Thank You
