I have a stripped stud on my rear passenger side tire. I went to rotate my tires and found out that when they put my new rims/tires on when I bought my truck that they stripped one of my studs. Now I can not get my tire off to get the stud off.

My aftermarket Wheels have a dust cover that inserts from the inside of the wheel so I can not get it off to get where I can possibly pull the bearing off. I tried looking at the back of the hub to see if I could get to the stud but there is a metal plate that is blocking access to the back of the studs.

Can any one give me any ideas on how I can go about getting this wheel/stud/lugnut off?

I've done it with an air chisel before, damage is almost guaranteed...try to split the nut...

ive heard of people tack welding another nut onto the end of the stripped one and loosening it like that. you may damage the wheel though..

Well I have heard of people tac welding on the back side of the stud to the hub. Which would probably work. But since there is a break rotor in the way I can not get to the back of the studs. Tac welding on the lug wont help me cause the whole stud spins.

OK maybe I'm confused. They put the lug nut back on, but the threads are stripped? And you can't get the lug nut off?
Take it back where you bought the truck, or had the tires rotated or whatever the story is, and make them fix it. Just have them crank the air wrench up, it will come off, with or without the stud.

Use a Dremel with a cut-off wheel.

so you stripped the splines in on the stud? not the nut, or the threads on the stud? maybe we need more info...
The splines in the stud. Then entire stud spins, I can grab the lug and spin the lug and the stud in both directions by hand and it never grabs. The people that put my wheels on cross threaded the lug on the stud. When I tried to pull the lug off it was on so tight that it stripped the splines from the hub.

It has been about 8 months since I bought the wheels, so I really doubt they will accept any blame for this.

I would only be able to cut off the tip of the lug. The lug is about 1 1/2" long and is recessed into the wheel probably 3/4 of the way.

sounds like you will have to carefully drill through the lugnut (if it's close-ended) and stud until they separate.
So you are saying to drill through the lug and continue drilling through the stud till it breaks apart? Maybe a combo of this and the air chisel will do the trick

that stud is going to be some hard shiat.. you better get some really good bits and a good drill. so you cant get to the back of the stud at all?

I'm sorry I can't help but I can offer this piece of advice for others. Our wheel studs are POS. I have replaced three of mine because of air wrenches. I will never allow an air wrench to be used on my wheels again. Most tire shop air wrenches tighten to at least 200 ft-lbs. Our manual specifies 98 ft-lbs for the lug nuts and they aren't kidding.

Maybe jack up the truck to raise the wheel in question, support the truck firmly on jack stand(s), remove all the other lug nuts from the wheel and then have somebody pull or pry (maybe with a 2x4) the wheel outwardly away from the hub to attempt to jam the head of the stud hard enough to keep the stud from turning while you spin the lug nut off with an impact wrench.

Actually I have thought about that, and was going to try this first before I start more drastic measures :D. Although I didnt think about prying it with a 2x4. If I can get an angle to get some leverage that may work.
