I am on the edge. I love the drive of the Titan and the front end, but after seeing posts like this from ADMORRIS is reinforces my doubt about the Titan. And like others, I went back to look at the F150. (love that Lariet interior and the colors not available on the Titan). Good and fair report. by the way, ADMORRIS, what was the built date of your Titan? I am looking at King Cab built since August/September.

Go ahead and buy the Titan. Interior and color choices would be my last considerations on whether to buy one truck over another. You couldn't make me buy a Kia no matter if it is the best color I've ever seen. When folks say they like the Lariat (or another big three) interior better than the Titan they often don't explain what they mean. Are they talking about looks or functionality. Some interiors of other trucks arguably may look better but what is more important to me is how the interior functions. The Titan excels in this respect. I like the gated shifter, steering wheel volume controls, 6 disc CD, and generally, how ever thing is laid out. The coolness of how an interior looks fades fast but the usefulness of a well designed interior remains forever.

You can find plenty of problems on the Ford forums as well. My biggest doubt about the Ford F150 was when I test drove the Titan right after I had driven it. If I was a Nissan salesman I would tell customers to test drive the Ford F150 first then come drive the Titan. I don't think Ford salesmen would say the same thing.

Never,
I'd say it's possible to get a lemon in any brand, regardless of build date.
My truck was built on 12/18/03, and I don't have any rattles, problems
with the brakes, etc. I do wish the radio picked up better, but I think
we'll get that worked out eventually.

I can understand where ADMORRIS is coming from. When you combine
a whole lot of small but aggravating problems on a new vehicle with a
crappy dealer, who wouldn't be inclined to switch?

This is exactly what I did - test drove the Ford, and then 15 minutes later drove the Titan. The Ford salesman sure did not want to let me go either, (maybe he had test drove the Titan already himself). Once I drove the Titan, I knew I had to have it. To me the Ford was boat-like and a little gutless. If I did mostly freeway driving, it wouldn't have made as much of a difference to me. All of the reviews and comparisons where the Titan came out #1 and the Ford #2 and even #3, had a major impact on my decision to chose the Titan, and after 4K miles, I am so glad I did.
As you state functionality is what matters, but I like the looks of the Titan, inside and out. The Fords are so common and conventional they blend into the crowd. I do think they are nice looking though, just plain. The Dodges are very common too, but they really stand out. When the Dodges first did their major redesign a few years back, I hated the way they looked. Now I think they look great. Just looking at the Titan, you gotta love it. So those of you that hate the Titan's looks, there still may be hope for you, since it might grow on you. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I like so many others drove both trucks. I originally went in to drive the F150 because of the 6 years 0% financing. I was very disappointed in the F150 and I have no idea as to why. It's ride was fantastic. Quiet, sure footed, just plain great. The interior was clean and nice looking. I didn't care for the plastics on the inside. It was just missing something and I don't know what. The dealer tried like crazy to not let me drive the Titan.

I then drove the Titan. I immediately loved the layout and looks of the interior. I like the more truck like ride of the Titan. I find myself with the swivel neck disease whenever I see either truck, but I know I made the right choice for me. I am experiencing the ticking noise, radio problem and a few other minor problems, but I expected this with a 1st year model.

A intelligent response would be...

Only 6 weeks, and a bad dealer. It's not the Titans fault. It's the dealers for not fixing your truck right the first time.

So you can't blame the Titan. You can blame the dealer.
Are you being sarcastic or do you really think that? Any vehicle should come without flaws period! If it was done right the dealer shouldn't have to "fix" anything in the first place. Anyway....

After reading you write-up, it sounds like you wanted the F150 from the beginning...and now you have one. Both are good trucks regardless. Yes, each may have problems, but I have found a dealer that will work for me on mine. My friend has a Lariat CC, and I have the Titan LE CC. We are both happy with our choices. The only thing I would want that he has is NO RATTLES. His interior fit and finish is a notch better...but tha is about it.
So honestly, if you had issues with the F150 would you post them here too? It would be interesting to see if issues come up (in the future) and how Ford deals with them. Good luck, and nice choice of color!

My first post!

Well after driving many F150s and getting some great offers from various dealerships, I bought a Titan last Friday. Interestingly, I made a thread on ford-trucks.com similar to this one, entitled simply, It's a TITAN. I was absolutely sure I would get another Ford, as I just traded off a 2000 Supecab that really treated me well. But the Titan was a hot rod that I just had to have!

As for the original poster, I will grant a few things.

The Ford is library quiet. It also rides like a Lexus, at least with the stock 265/65/17 tires on the XLT SuperCrew. It seemed solidly put together. However, my Titan does not have any squeeks or rattles either.

The seating in the Titan and the F150 doesn't really seem that different to me, at least when considering the split benches on both models. However I did test drive one F150 with the captains chairs and that was very nice. The fold down middle seat on the Titan has much more storage though. I'd say this area for the trim levels I was looking at (XE Nissan and XLT Ford) were about a draw.

The Ford handles fairly nimbly considering it's heft, at least compared to the older F150. The rack and pinion is a huge improvement over the previous F150. The Titan does not soak up large bumps as well as the F150. However, the Titan does handle quite well and has excellent linear steering. I'd call this area a draw considering the subjective nature of buyer preference.

As for the interior quality, I don't see how my XE gives up anything to the Ford XLT trim level. I think they're both about even at the trim levels I was seeking. The stereo is slightly nicer in the Nissan, mine has the 6 disc changer, an aux input that works great with my Ipod and a satellite option. The Ford 6 disc in-dash is not as nice, it lacks the Aux input and factory satellite compatibility.

I have not had occasion to try the heat yet, as it's been very warm the last few days in Texas. I have noticed that the A/C does not blow as cold as in my old Ford when sitting in traffic unless you turn the recirculate on. In the Fords the normal AC is cold enough unless it's over 100. On the Nissan you need to put it on recirculate when you stop because the air will suddenly get warmer on you.

Yes, the F150 is sluggish even with the 5.4. The Titan as we all know is a hot rod. This was one of the prime selling factors for me. There's no contest in this regard.

Another prime factor was the exhaust note. I can see where this might be a love it or hate it thing for folks. I LOVE the exhaust burble of the Titan! It almost sounds like I have already put a cat-back exhaust on it.

As far as exterior looks go, I think the F150 is one handsome truck! Probably slightly better looking than the Titan. I love the deep box as well. But the Titan has definitely grown on me since I first saw it at the State Fair of Texas auto show in Fall of 2003. I am proud to have a great looking truck in my driveway!

As far as problems go, I only have 130 miles so time will tell. But I know that some folks have been complaining about a suspension shimmy on the 04 F150's particularly between 40 and 60 mph. I noticed this on two of the 5 trucks that I test drove. Not exactly confidence inspiring. Hopefully, the Titan's engine will be up to snuff. As it is based on some earlier Infiniti engines, I have confidence that it will be.

On price, the SuperCrew XLT I was looking at stickered for 31,755. The Titan XE Crew Cab stickered at 26,800 despite having the same options. I got an offer for 22,685 on the Ford and ended up paying 22,400 on the Titan after rebates. So, good values either way. Neither truck had many options. The only one I have is the interior upgrade with the 6 CD and storage compartment, which I really didn't want anyways, and didn't pay for since I got upset with the dealer over a number of things and almost walked out on several occasions. (there's one thing Ford has an advantage on in this area, the Ford dealers are much nicer than the jackholes at the Nissan dealer). The Ford only had the 5.4, limited slip and tow package, which was offset by a 1021 invoice credit on the Tow and Go package. So anywhoo...

wow six months is kind of fast, and I bet that had to be huge loss on a trade in. but yeah I will admit the interior, and sound supression of the ford is waay better than the nissan, but fore its actual use--truck stuff--towing, hauling, pulling, etc. the tranny and engine are just are just miles ahead on the titan. I would have waited at least three years as the f150 is having some crazy mechanical isues with the drivetrain which to me is worse than squeaks and brakes

I would have preferred either a Ford diesel or Dodge diesel, but they cost more than I was willing to pay.

Aside from the problems you experienced, I found the handling characteristics of the Titan and F150 completely different, offering distinct choices. The F150 started out as my first choice, but eventually became my second choice as I went with the Titan. The F150 was best ride by far, smooth and comfy, but vague handling and under powered compared to the Titan. Both offer large stylish interiors, and similar size beds. I liked the interior, bed features, power and handling characteristics of the Titan a little better. Each truck has it's personality, depending upon what you like.

I'm happy with my choice of the Titan over what seems to be a very attractive offering in the F150. I think both Ford and Nissan will take aggressive steps to close the gaps (Titan in first year production problems, smooth ride, and tail gate assist, and Ford in more power, better handling, and innovative features).

You probably did a wise thing to bail on that particular Titan and the lousy dealer - HOWEVER, a better choice might have been a 2005 Titan from a different dealer, you never know.......

Just an update to who may be interested. I've got about 300 miles on my 150 so far...not a tick/squeak/clunk/rattle/pop/bang so far. I know it's only 300 miles, but less than with my original Nissan at this point. We shall see...I'm sure there are people on here hoping that the Ford will die..hehe.

I still can't believe I'm driving a Ford. This is my first American made car/truck I've ever driven. So far so good!

Getting the Superchips tuner on Wednesday...will update on the power gains if anyone is interested. As you can see, I still enjoy this sight more than others visited. Hope you guys don't mind if I hang around and shoot the **** even though I am a Ford owner.

Good luck with you Ford admorris!!
Luckily, my Titan has been good to me (so far) and I LOVE it.
I traded in the wife's 2000 4Runner because of numerous problems that the Toyota dealer would not or could not fix. Shaking steering wheel, interior lights that didn't work, ac that would work when it wanted to, etc. etc. Toyota customer service gave me no help whatsoever.
I lost several $$$ but the lack of aggravation was worth it in my mind.
I know what you are going through and understand why you did it.
I also will never buy a Toyota again.

I agree with you admorris. I too love my Titan but must admit the problems have gotten old very quickly. Good post, I'm grateful for the info. Did you take a big hit when you traded in? I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

there is no such thing as perfect. there will always be human error and problems with things that are built. after all, this isnt a perfect world.

I'm just one of the lucky ones, I guess. No problems in 4K miles and with a whole bunch of mods.

Yes I did take a nice hit for sure. But like I said to my brother tonight when I was talking to him...the money I lost in the Titan was not worth having a truck that I know I would never trust again, no matter if the problems were eventually fixed or not. The 150 I now have is as solid a truck as you can get. I cannot tell you what a good feeling it is driving down the road not turning my head in every direction trying to find out where the latest tick or clunk is coming from. That to me is definitely worth the money I lost on trade in.

Once again...I'm not putting down the Titan in general...just putting down MY Titan.

I'm getting ready to get the Superchips tuner on Wednesday. I have read on numerous credible sites that this is a minor miracle for the 5.4L V8...something like 20-25hp and 25-30 ft. lbs of torque for around $300!

always welcome :)

My .02 -

I drove both. Didn't like the Ford's seats. Stupid Ford dealer actually had a Chevy 1500 in the showroom, so they could show how much better the Ford was.

I sat in the Chevy's seats after sitting in the Ford. Chevy seats are SOOO comfy (my opinion), the Ford's were hard, and I felt like I sat ON them, not IN them.

I like the Titan's seats better than the Ford, not as well as the Chevy.

I liked the Ford overall. Really did. Smooth, great handling, great brakes, nice interior look.

But

Lousy back seat (crew cab Ford). Compare the two (Titan/Ford). I'd be curious to see what you guys think. My wife agrees. Titan has more room, more angled seatback, more comfort.

What sold me was the "intangeables". Driving the Titan just made me grin like an idiot. Soooo much fun. Still is. The Ford (and even more so the Chevy) just felt like ho-hum to me.

That said, If there wasn't I Titan, I'd get a Ford.

I definately agree, nothing is perfect. My point was that it comes from the manufacturer, so it is not the dealers fault it was not built correctly. Things will eventually fall apart over time, but there is no excuse for a "new" vehicle to be delivered with known flaws that cannot be easily taken care of... However incompetent sevice techs are a different story:)
