i've got a stock '05 Titan 4x4 with about 45,000 mi. My steering feels fine at highway speeds, but when I brake to slow before turning a 90 degree corner onto an adjacent street, the steering becomes real stiff as if there is no power steering. Does anyone have ideas of what is causing this? There is no visible damage to the power steering rack, no leaks, nothing.

ANY IDEAS?

Fluid level check out OK?

I'd think it has to have something to do with the power steering pump being starved under braking. If it's not the fluid level, it doesn't sound good. That would lead me to believe it's the pump itself. Or perhaps the valving.

Someone will probably come along and prove me wrong, but that's my thought anyway. No brake light on your dash when the issue manifests?

Is the belt in good shape?
Dry?
Tight?

Tires have enough air?

Otherwise, I have to go with Carbeaux about a pump that is not pumping correctly, or a rack that isn't working right.

Is there something loose in the reservoir that is intermittently blocking the fluid pickup point?
We once had a diesel Rabbit that would crap out only on sweeping right turns, and it had something that had fallen into the fuel tank.

Belt was a thought, too, but if that it would seem that it would show up under other conditions as well. Not just braking.

Is anything jammed in the rack ends that would inhibit extreme movement?
Perhaps some road debris or otherwise?

Now there's a thought which hadn't occurred to me, but it's a good one.

There isn't a Smart car or a Daewoo stuck under there somewhere is there?

Here's a question: When you turn the wheel, does it intermittently "pulse"? I've experience this on another truck when the pump was about to crap out.

We have variable assist power steering, pressure and road feel controlled by the ECU if I'm correct...This may be a case were the system is being told to do the wrong thing at the wrong time...

I'll check some other sources and get back to all...

...Well after a quick check I can find nothing to support my first reply...:crying:

To the OP:

How is the power steering during normal driving?...low speed driving such as parking?....sitting at a stop turning lock to lock?...

there's no smart car or daewoo stuck under there! lol

my belt seems to be in good shape, it doesn't make noise or slip (as far as i can tell). there is no road debris, trail debris, nothin of that nature.

Tires are aired up to spec.

There is no "intermittent" pulse when i turn the wheel. It seems to drive as smooth as it did prior to this happening, that is until i brake to turn 90 degrees into my driveway, then it tightens up like manual steering.

Has anyone had any experiences with a bend tie rod?

You're not in 4 wheel drive are you?

Does it do it turning both left and right?

Have you EVER added fluid?
How about a bubble caught in the system?
