Service Manual it shows the coverbolts being torqued to 42 ft/lbs and filler plug to 34 ft/lbs.
Hudson Valley Titan,

Is it possible that the filler plug's torque value is 25 ft/lbs, the same as the '04's differential cover? I have the '04 service manual, and on RFD-11, it shows 34 Newton Meters/25 ft-lb for the filler plug.

As I dont' have the service manual for the '06, I figured tightening the filler plug to 34 ft-lb, but as I tightened the plug, it was difficult to tighten it past 30 ft-lb. The bolt kept turning and turning... I got a little scared, thinking that I might mess up the thread. So, I stopped at just over 30 ft-lb. I thought that the torque value changed because of the different material, but I expected lower value if any changes?

By the way, I'm glad I changed the fluid today at 1,529 miles. I probably should have done it sooner. It was black and completely non-transparent while my '04's final gear oil looked like honey and very transparent at 1,200 miles or so... Quite a bit of more metal shavings on the magnet to compared to the '04.

Dang dude, just do what's been done since the invention of the wrench....snug it up.

What size are the diff cover bolts? 42 ft/lbs sounds like too much. Isn't the filler plug pipe thread? There are a lot of things on vehicles that you learn to tighten with-out a torque wrench, the diff cover isn't structural. This is called experience...

On a similar note...

..If I am replacing my rusty '04 diff. cover with one of the newer OEM finned covers, is there a gasket that goes between the cover and the differential housing or can you use liquid gasket material and be OK? I haven't taken my old cover off just yet, and you can see dried, liquid gasket material sticking out between the old cover and where it bolts to the axle housing. I would assume there should be a gasket between the cover and the housing, but I've been looking around on here and haven't noticed where anybody mentioned one.

Use liquid rtv gasket maker. I used Permatex Ultragrey when I did mine, see the diff cover link in my sig...
That's exactly what I did. Entire job took about 45 minutes. Interesting, I couldn't get quite 4 1/2 pints in there like the service manual says it should hold. Don't know if that has something to do with the newer diff. cover or not. Anyway, I'm running 75W140 - Royal Purple in there, so she should be smokin' now!!!! :gunz:
