I was always under the impression that tips do affect sound, in the way of affecting resonation, loudness (to a degree), and "chopping" sounds.

I used to have a 4 inch diameter, 18 inch long, and cut at a 45 degree angle, directly on the end of the muffler. I used to run just a dumped muffler, no tip for a really long time. After install, right away i noticed that it seemed louder, and had more chop. Thumbs up.

However, my entire muffler broke off due to a offroading accident. I eventually replaced it with the flowmaster 44, the same exact muffler as before. This time i had new piping put in, and it dumps out the sound at stock location to the side. It was a black 45 degree cut tip, however this one has a diameter of 2.5 inches. It sounds so much quieter to me, than with the bigger tip.

The guy that put it on insists that a bigger tip does nothing for sound, so i eventually believed him and let him do what he felt fit. I expected it to be quieter, but didn't expect it to be that much quieter. I feel like the tip is a culprit to this.

Am I right, do bigger tips affect sound?

And btw, please don't insult me. I actually happen to be a deaf man that has difficulty distinguishing between different sounds, and its a big challenge to me. And yes, i know i picked a muffler that most people don't agree with...it was based purely on sound, and it sounds good to me! deal with it:rockon

I have the same muffler and my exhaust rusted out at the tip. I had an exhaust shop hack it off at the bend and dump it. It got considerably louder. I don't think the tip affects sound, but I know the length of piping does for sure.

The length of the piping, like how long the piping runs after the muffler? Or like the length of the tip?

A reso tip can affect sound immensely. Mainly CIS. Will it make it louder? No.

When it became louder in the cab, I assumed it was louder all together. I guess it really was just more CIS and resontation.

Yes, the tip does affect the sound of your exhaust. I have the Gibson MM exhaust, it is somewhat quieter, but more choppy without the tip. I have had the tip off for extended periods of time and have also used a sound meter to confirm this. The MME tip acts like a speaker or megaphone, although it does clean up the sound and I've chosen to keep it on for the moment.

Yes, the length of the piping post muffler. Also the diameter of the piping will affect the sound too. The larger the piping the more flow. Unsure of whether the sound would go up or down with larger piping though. Anyone?

Great question!

An exhaust tip can definitely change the exhaust tone. Like Kaipo said, if you pull the tip off (when speaking about a difference of 12" in length off the end of the tailpipe and a 6" diameter tip) it would definitely make the exhaust sound different.

Generally, if you have a 3" pipe and a 4" tip, pulling that tip itself off is not going to change anything. Now, if you were to change the length of the pipe itself and add or remove a tip, you will definitely get different sounds and volumes. The reason exhaust manufacturers run exhaust systems all the way to the rear of the vehicle is because with it dumped under the truck, it creates a drone that most people find unpleasant or unbearable.

A large exhaust tip will act as a megaphone if it is positioned correctly and is used as an extension of the exhaust pipe and not just as a tip. Basically, if you have a tip that slides over your exhaust and your exhaust pipe is in over 50% of the length of that tip, you are probably not going to see any difference. If you weld that tip onto the end of your tailpipe, it will act as a megaphone (kinda).

agreed^^^^ i had it dumped with a 5" tip, drone city. added 3" tailpipe out the back like stock, it got quiet and not very deep. I cut off part of the tailpipe and added a 5" tip and the sound got much deeper and a bit louder.

Yall confirmed what I always believed! I'll have to hack off my tail pipe, and put on a new tip. I was never 100 percent sure, cause sometimes my hearing aid plays tricks on me :bangit:
