I was always under the impression that tips do affect sound, in the way of affecting resonation, loudness (to a degree), and "chopping" sounds.
I used to have a 4 inch diameter, 18 inch long, and cut at a 45 degree angle, directly on the end of the muffler. I used to run just a dumped muffler, no tip for a really long time. After install, right away i noticed that it seemed louder, and had more chop. Thumbs up.
However, my entire muffler broke off due to a offroading accident. I eventually replaced it with the flowmaster 44, the same exact muffler as before. This time i had new piping put in, and it dumps out the sound at stock location to the side. It was a black 45 degree cut tip, however this one has a diameter of 2.5 inches. It sounds so much quieter to me, than with the bigger tip.
The guy that put it on insists that a bigger tip does nothing for sound, so i eventually believed him and let him do what he felt fit. I expected it to be quieter, but didn't expect it to be that much quieter. I feel like the tip is a culprit to this.
Am I right, do bigger tips affect sound?
And btw, please don't insult me. I actually happen to be a deaf man that has difficulty distinguishing between different sounds, and its a big challenge to me. And yes, i know i picked a muffler that most people don't agree with...it was based purely on sound, and it sounds good to me! deal with it:rockon
