took me a while to read alll fo the posts, but still no real answers to the question that kept comming up. what would be the best conventional oil to use and filter. my titan barely has 400 miles on it so i still have time to think about which oil to use. what do you guys think about the k&n filters. are they any good? if not what off the shelf filter would be the best you have tried.

Search for review of oil filters. (See link below) Somebody disassembled a couple hundred and reviewed every fine detail and spec on the filters. One of the top was WIX, so I bought a dozen for my truck. IIRC another was Baldwin. Great Thread. Read the summary section to know top good filters and top bad filters (some premium labled ones to boot). Biggest concern was really the quality of the drainback valve.

Overall, I think best oil (But Not Conventional) is Mobil 1 5W30 for most of us, Amsoil in same tier of quality. I'm using Mobil1 at first change done at 3500 miles (just prior to major highway trip). I have no concerns of delayed breakin period. Not to be foolish or disrespectful to anyone elses opinion or what there buddy told them who really knows engines, but - Big Corps like Mobil etc. spend lots of money with real engineers to invent this stuff and prove/disprove qualities of a product before selling it. Mobile 1 did not build its rep over the years by ruining engines. Many Oil Analysis here back that up.

CONVENTIONAL OIL: If JetTech says Chevron Supreme does good, trust what he says. He backs his statements as well as anyone, even if I disagree with some piddly statement. He does great research. Buy Chevron Supreme and a WIX Filter and sleep well at night.

I do my own LOF, cost about $42. If coolant system ever blows a hose, I have no worries of engine damage as Synthetic will not fail to protect engine. this is the best MOD any of us can make to any vehicle.

Life in general - Learn the rules and why they are the rule, then learn when you can break the rules to be innovative/creative without harm. Dont make your rules by a few exceptions and ignoring the obvious truths.

Hi all,

I'm amazed this thread is still alive, but then again it shouldn't surprise me too much. Oil is, and always has been, a hot topic amongst enthusiasts looking to treat their pride and joy to the best of life bloods. I'm glad you all are still doing research and testing with different oils along with filters. What was great yesterday (last year), may not be the best of the best today. Don't forget to do some of your own research on www.bobistheoilguy.com site, there's more information on that site than any other that I know when it comes to oil and samples. It's absolutely invaluable information that is backed up with samples to prove the worthiness of the different oils. Keep up the great comments here, I love reading them and never give up the quest to find the best!!!

I put Mobil one in my truck after the 3000 miles and haven't noticed any problems like you mentioned. I wish you had a sample of the Mobil 1 oil you used it's possible it may not have been Mobil 1. In the past the same filling machine was used to fill all varity of oils bottled so there is a possibilty it may have been off spec. Of course there are quality control issues to prevent this mandated procedures, sampling etc; I use Mobil 1 in my Goldwing and used it in my Valkrye when I had one and I noticed my bike runs a lot cooler with the synthetic oil

I have not used Mobil One recently, but in 1994 I used it in my 1991 VW GTI 2.0 16V, which came from the factory with an oil temp. gauge, and it lowered the normal operating temp. almost 20 degrees. Granted the engine is way smaller than our Titan's, but you get the idea.

First I've seen that, very interesting observation, rather dramatic difference.

Yeah, I was very happy, and used it whenever I could afford it. Most of us won't keep these things long enough to matter, I'm sure 200k miles would be no problem with dino oil on this engine. I used to live in Towson by the way, my brother still lives there. We are from Bel Air, MD:flying:

Just in case anyone cares, I have used regular Penzoil since I bought the truck and switched to Mobil 1 at 15,000 miles. I noticed the same loud idle like JetTech immediately after. It is the first time I have used it in any of my cars. The only reason I switched is because of people raving about it on this forum. I won't be using it anymore though.

Just to recap this somewhat old thread now, the Mobil 1 that I used that made the engine noisy was the old M1 10W-30, not the new EP that M1 has available today. I didn't have any problems with noise using the 5W-30 or the 0W-40 grades of M1, old or new formulas.

This is only FYI for those who haven't started reading this thread from the beginning. I didn't want anyone to think I was bashing all of the M1 grades because they have some spectacular oil in my opinion.

Thanks JetTech, I had missed that detail, but knew I was missing some kind of detail. I'm happy so far with the 5W30, but may switch to 0W40 if I feel appropiate for my enviroment in Annapolis, MD.

I sold out and switched to synthetic oil ?

i put mobil 1 5w-30 in my titan last month..i figure because i only put on about 7,000 miles ayear synthetic would be better..but i still am going to change it every 3,000 miles which is a bout 6 moonths for me..is this okay ?

With the differences in oil, I wonder why Nissan here in Washington State now use Castro Syth on all their Titan's for every oil change. Good or bad, I have 30,100 miles on mine with the Castro in the last 10,000 miles and no problems yet. Maybe going back to conventional oil is really best, hard to say.

Tried Mobil 1 once. I will never put it in again. No change in performance or mpg. After I have no more free oil changes from the dealer I will be using MotorCraft synthetic blend with the nissan filter.

Excellent, only 3k/6months. You should never have a problem with that. Sleep well.

Hey Guys,

I have a synthetic oil for you. I brought my truck to my buddy's shop for a tire rotation and oil change while it was on the lift. He recommended that I put synthetic oil in my truck. The recommendation was odd...he recommended Pentosynth 5-30. It is made by Pentosin (for all you european car nuts) which is original fill on all high-end european cars and in the the VW TDI's.

My truck is quieter at idle and my mileage is better than conventional oil provided. I highly recommend it. The only other thing I will recommend is to use a genuine Nissan Filter because of the filtration capacity...it is much higher than the usual after market filters (Fram, Purolator, Bosch) and the cost is about the same as the current aftermarket filters. Food for thought.

Cheers!

I think this is a great thread, especially for a new owner like myself. But even after reading all 11 pages I still havn't been able to figure out what I should use for my trucks first oil change (1,500 miles). After reading about shavings and what not in the oil from the break in process i'd like to get it switched out.

Don't worry about it!

Some of these guys are rediculous oil freaks.

Go with some tried and true oil like chev supreme "dino" oil or 5w30 mobil one and be done with it.

I'm about to run to 20K on my odometer and I've been running Mobil One 5W-30 the whole time. No problems, engine seemed to run a lot smoother when I initially switched it to the synthetic, fuel economy improved slightly, but I drive like an idiot so I'm averaging 11mpg anyway. Gotta love smokey burnouts

Well said Adaviss. Nissan filter is fine too.
