Where to Mount XM Unit (not the factory) and Antenna?

Hey, I am trying find a place to mount the unit and antenna. I was wanting to place the antenna on the roof in front of the brake light and run the wire throw the brake like. How do I get the brake light housing out? I know there are two plastic pieces in the ceiling, but do they just pull out to reach the screws? Also, where is the best place for the XM unit? And, where can is the easiest place to find 12V? Is there anything in the overhead console?

I know these question have been asked many time before, so a link would to a thread would be nice to.

I used this thread to install my XM receiver and it was a huge help! I modified his directions just a bit and you can see what I did here.

A fish tape will make the job much much easier.

id say mount it in the spot where tha nav screen would go if u dont have one ....

I used the Bracketron bracket i bought for less than $20 bucks, Then added the PAC Audio convertor to run the XM and my IPOD.

I assume you have either the Rockford or 6CD (non-RF) unit. I have the Rockford and use an XM commander. The antenna I mounted on top of the rearview mirror using double sided tape and routed the antenna wire just under the the edge of the roof trim, down the pillar next to the windshield on the drivers side, under the dash, down to the floor and under the mat to the area under the drivers seat where I sat the receiver box.
The control head is mounted just above the air vent on the drivers side of the center console using doudble sided tape. I connect audio to the AUX using a radioshack purchased right-angle connector. The audio leads, DC wiring and control head wire is routed under the edge of the center console to the receiver box under the seat.
To find a convenient source of DC power, look under the dash for the factory installed connector for the Nissan satellite receiver. It is located just above the brake pedal. That connector has both switched and constant 12 volts. Use a voltmeter or consult the factory manual to find the appropriate pins.

The antenna can be mounted on the roof, routing the antenna wire through the cabin brake light, but it is much simpler and almost as good reception mounting on the mirror (I have done it both ways and prefer the mirror mounting)

Mine is similar to Kenny's, but I like the antenna centered over the brake light.

For those with the "SAT" option on the stereo, what kind of connector do I need to do a direct connection with my tuner? (I haven't taken apart my dash yet to see). The BestBuy salesman yesterday told me that I had to buy it from the dealer (ugh). Upon my visit to the dealer today, I was told all they had was a tuner that plugged into the back (enabling me to use the OEM head unit), but he didn't have any additional details except for a $300+ price tag for the equipment. Suggestions?

I used the Periphreal PNXI that is a wiring adapter. It plugs in between the radio harness, and allows you to hook up 2 RCA inputs to your factory radio. I love it, it is simple to install and set up. Sound is a TON better than through the AUX input on the 2004's... Hope this helped.

I installed my XM Commander in the blank where the LE has the multi-info display.

Dremel with a cut off wheel. Used the bucket that comes with the Commander to measure and cut out. Then used 2-sided tape to hold bucket in place. Commander snaps in. Easy. Oh, and use a fishtape to get control cable across to unit hidden near drivers gas pedal kick panel.

I originally mounted my antenna in the back but kept on losing signal when going under bridges and stuff. Talked to a guy at circuit city and he said to mount it in the front with no wire showing smack dab on top of the windshield. It works perfectly now , I never lose signal under bridges anymore. He said it had to do with some sort of angle and deflection crap.
