How do you guys calculate your gas milage? My friends diesel silverado tells it on the dash screen =(

Do you just fill the tank and see how many miles you got before it turns the low gas light on?

or whats your method?

alright

I'd love to hear your method

thanks!!!

I was actually interested in this as well. I dont think that filling up tank and waiting for the light to go on is any accurate

Ummmmm.... it's just math. Keep a logbook in the center console, write down your mileage and gallons per fill. Do the subtraction and division, and write that in the book, too. Also interesting to log the price of the fuel. I've been watching it go up about a dime every week lately.

Easy! I just take off my shoes and count on my toes! I have just enough. LOL

But seriously. Fill your tank and reset your trip odometer. Drive normally till you use at least 3/4 of your tank (not critical but more you use the better). Fill your tank again and note the exact gallons on the pump and miles on the trip odometer. Divide miles by the gallons and you have your mileage.

BB, you're a nerd.................:jester:

I fill up and zero my trip odometer. Then when its time to fill up again I get a reciept (with my gallons) and write my mileage on it. Then when i get to a calculator 9or use your cell phone) I divide the miles by the gallons usually something like 257.4 / 22.1

Jeez, then this must make me "uber nerd" as I keep track of pricing, brand, octane, and if the fill was gas or E10.

Let us know how it turns out.

Does this make me a geek???

Red line is actual values, blue line is a moving average.
Every fillup, I write the odomoter value on the gas reciept and then when I have time mileage, gallons consumed, and $ get entered into the spreadsheet (Oh hell, I am definitely a geek)

I don't think the method of fill up and noting the odometer or setting the trip meter and then going a ways and filling up again and doing the math is always going to be all that accurate. I have stock size wheels/tires and when I pass freeway mile markers, the odometer and the marker never jive. I go about 200 yds further than an actual mile by markers (which are very accurate) before my odo shows I've gone a mile. If any of your odometers are like mine, you're actually getting a little better mileage than you think. If you do highway driving, you could get a more accurate account of mpg's by using markers - but no way to do that for city driving on a messed up odo. Check yours against those markers, and if it's like mine, be happy knowing that you're getting better mpg's than you thought, AND, the miles are racking up a little slower.
