Hey all

I took my truck to a local mechanic who specialized in nissan vehicles.

I had a cracked pass side exhaust manifold.

Long story short when I picked it up he had put a magnaflow header on the cracked side with a cat bolted on there as well.

Despite not saying this is what I wanted he read my mind or something because this is the route I wanted to take but I want both sides obviously but right now don't have the free cash to drop another 1200 or so for the parts and labor to hit the other side.

HOWEVER, now I have 1 side header 1 side stock manifold. He obviously finds this to be perfectly acceptable since he did it. What do you all think of this??

I don't like the sound of it at all, but at the same time this is the first I've ever heard of doing such a thing. Beats me.

It will be fine until the other side blows.
I like the idea because he saved you a ton of money over the factory part.

the auto guide update is still buggy.

Yah it woulda been cheaper by a couple hundred but my 04 spent a lot of time in ND and MN for most of its life and the bolts didn't play nice. He had to cut a couple of them and do some drilling. So, he didn't bill me any where near what he actually spent time wise on it but still it added a good amount to the final tally.

Unless he used an OEM cat on the header half of your motor is going to run lean. The OEM cats are very restrictive and the aftermarket cat he most likely bolted up there is going to flow better and throw off how it runs.. Why he would think it was a good idea to only install one is beyond me.. sounds like a real specialist :dunno:

Funny you mention this as the SES light came on 2 days later with code 1283.

If I put a magnaflow header / cat on the left side will I require a tune to get the mixture in the proper weights or will the ECM figure this out on it's own once it has equal flow on both sides??

Cheers

My thought exactly! The cat cell count is different from the stock to the magnaflow replacement therefore flow will be different also. I would bet money that the other side is cracked also just not leaking yet. Most will find this very thing when they install headers.

You will most likely need a tune. If you are flex it may work without a tune, but you'll need to get your afrs checked.

I'd honestly look into getting some JBA's from nightowl and a tune from Cajun. It may be a bit more, but it won't crack. I haven't heard good things about the maggy manifolds.

I would say yes to the tune as a guy from Austin Texas called me the other day and his magna flow replacement manifolds are already going bad throwing codes. He did not tune afterwards and has noticed the bad exhaust smell from the cats. Either the afrs are out causing the cats to fail or the design with ceramic cats being so close to the engine is causing the premature failure. He has put about 20k miles on the Maggie's.

I tune a lot of trucks and if a guy came into my shop with your setup as much as I'd love to take his money I would not touch it until that header situation was taken care of. Even if you don't tune it at a minimum you've got to equal out both sides of the engine.. there's a reason these parts come in pairs:upsidedow

I thought the Magnaflow headers were horrendously expensive. If your mechanic saved you money that must have changed.

It was less than the dealership price on a new manifold but not by a huge margin.

Came with a 5 year warranty..... those can be tricky to cash in on though with a part like this. No warranty on the nissan part as far as I know though.

Correct me if I'm wrong on the nissan part when it comes to coverage of any kind.

He had the best advice of the day. You win CMM.

Ok took a small break at work and if he put the magnaflow high flow cat on there its a 200 count cat I beileve I know they make a stock version though its like our walker stuff here its aftermarket but oem specs unless you get the dynomax or thrush stuff.

If he saved him a lot of money though then he may have bought the universal 200 cell count one. They are a lot cheaper.
