5100s and 08 + 4x4 coils

Ok, I know there have been threads on this before and are still out there, but i want to get some input for what i am planning on doing for my truck.

First off, Today i just received my Bilstein 5100's for the front, and tomorrow i should be receiving my 08+4x4 coils.

Now, for the fun part...

I also have a 1.5 spacer i would like to add on top of this. I want to get the most height possible out of this set up. I know im probably going to have to get a aftermarket UCA and im probably going to ordering that in the next couple of weeks.

So, my questions are...
Without the aftermarket uca...(for the time being so i can save for a prg)

1. Will this set up work (with a lil bit of grinding to the coil bucket)

2. What setting can i use on the bilstein.

3. What will give me the most height?

im not too worry about roughness of a ride, because this truck never sees the dirt or mud. All pavement. And if for some reason it is too rough, then i can always adjust it, but i would like as much input as possible on this as i plan to do all of this on Saturday.

I know my way around a truck, but i have not done much with lifting a truck before. So any ideas or input would be much appreciated. Thanks

Do you mean a 1.5" measured spacer, (2.5" leveling kit), used with the 5100's?

If it's a 2.5" leveling kit, and your '05 is a 2wd, you can probably get away with grinding the coil bucket lip, but there would likely be too much contact for an '05 4x4, with stock UCAs.

If the spacer is a ~0.9" measured, a 1.5" leveling kit, it will clear on an '05 with the 5100's.

As far as coil bucket contact, a longer coil, or the setting on the 5100's doesn't matter.

There's no reason to use the '08 springs, (except on a Bilstein HD strut), because you can run the '05 springs on the next higher perch. If you run the '08 4x4 springs on the top perch the ride will be bad even on-road, and some people have difficulty even putting the strut assemble back together because of the '08 coil's longer length. Too much preload means very little droop travel, so the front wheels run out of travel on much smaller road depressions, and then the cab must follow ... almost like not having a suspension.

it is .9" thick spacer. i was reading alot on this forum and from what i read 08 coils were the way to go with these bilsteins... i just want to get max lift acheived with what i have.

as for the setting you think the middle setting?

#7 ·
oh it is a 05 2wd se model

also, if i got with the 1.5 spacer, bilsteins on middle perch, and 08+4x4 coils, how much lift will that give me? thanks
You should get around 4". 1.5" middle setting 5100's, 1.5" level kit, and 1.5" coil, but sometimes there can be some loss when adding up the numbers, so 4" is my guess, but I've also read post by people claiming more.

I am a 4x4 and had the 08 springs from 4x4parts.com with the 5100's when first installed put together with shock on highest setting and was real rough, took it back apart and set it on middle and ride was Much better. even thou are trucks are not quite the same I would still not do highest setting. I did run that for a while but that was before the new coils. I sit at just under 41" all round with airbags at 20lb's

I agree with TA_CC_TX the 5100's at the highest setting is a bit rough. I run them in the middle with 08 springs and I'm very happy with the setup. Another option might be to just get that for now. Once you can afford the PRG UCA's then get a tall spacer. This will give you the extra clearance and max height.

here is a couple pics of mine...I tried 08 pro 4x coils and 2.5 spacer, got them in but no travel....bumps hit hard! went to a 1.5 spacer and stock strut and 08 pro 4x coils...love it! stiffens up the front a little more and NO coil bucket contact even on large bumps!

man that looks good. so you only have the bilsteins and the coils? how is the ride? are you at the middle perch on the bilsteins?

Looks great ... surprised you don't have more rake with that big of a rear block.
So no big tow package? ... think its overload leaf adds maybe an inch. Mine takes 3" in the front, and nothing in the back, to level because of it.

#20 ·
nope. no tow package or anything. it doesnt sit perfectly level, back is a lil higher, not by much at all. i probable could have went with a 2" block. that would probably make it sit perfectly level, but oh well. im hoping with this new set up i'll have the reverse rake by maybe an inch or so. nothing dramatic. i like the way that looks. but we shall find out tomorrow.

eventually im going to put the spindle kit on here to acheive the lift i REALLY want, but they are on the high side, so im just going to do this for now, then add on to it later down the road.

Here is the way I break it down....

08 coils on a pre 07 2wd- ~3.5" (got that on my 06 2wd)
+ the 1.5" spacer
+ bils on middle setting- ~1.5"
= ~6.5"

On my old 06 I ran cst spindles, 08 coils and bils on the lowest setting. That combined with 295-70/18 nitto TGs put me at about 43" up front. Rear was at about 42" with a 3" block IIRC.

6.5" ... that's 1" taller than a ProComp stage1 bracket lift will give.

Do you know of any Titans without 4" spindles, on here, getting this much lift? I'd like to see the pics. [That would be 2.5" taller than the pic I posted above].

You are correct sir! I have not seen anyone running that exact setup. Will it work? Maybe? I know the setup minus the spacer will work. This would be the equivalent of a newer 4wd running a leveling kit with the 5100s. Or so that's what my logic tells me. Don't forget a 6" lift on a older 2wd is equal to far less lift on a 4wd. My old set up with spindles, 08 coils and 5100s gave me 8" of lift, yet another members pro4x with 4" of lift was the same exact height.

ok so know here is my delima. i just got word that my 08 springs are on back order, and they wont get my money back until the middle of next week. i really wanted to do this today as i took off of work plus i have help today. so that being said, i have a 1.5 spacer, a 2.5 spacer, and bilsteins. what can i do to get the highest lift on what i have? i will probably add the coils at a later time, maybe when i put my spindles on but what should i do? should i just wait until they come in, or should i put the bilstines on with one of the spacers that i have? also, im running 33" tires right now, so i have to alteast clear those would like to go as high as possible.

#29 ·
I would just end up waiting if I were you. Installing the Bilsteins on your current coils and then switching them over will be a pain. You could install the spacer now if you wanted to, but it would be easier to do it all at the same time. Just my thoughts, I know it is tough to wait though!

#30 ·
Well I didn't wait lol. I installed the bilsteins on the middle setting with a 1.5 inch spacer. So far so good but I have only driven about twenty miles on them. I might have a shop put the coils on later because I had hell just with the bilsteins and spacer.

When my 2008 2WD was stock, it sat 35" upfront. My old 2006 2WD sat the same when it was stock.

Currently, my 2008 has only the Bilstein 5100 set on the middle with 08 4x4 springs, and it lifted me 5" total. I currently sit at 40" upfront. If I were to run a spacer, I would need new UCA's.

Thanks man, i got them from shock warehouse.com they were 108 a piece. that was the cheapest that i had found them. it is a smooth ride. im just having to be careful because my tires rub when i turn sharp. but hopefully i can get the 08 4x4 coils installed this week. depending on how much my local shops installs them for. i should have just waited and had them do it all, but oh well. live and learn. The install wasnt too bad itself, the hard part was compressing the coils. i rented a coil compression tool from auto zone and it wasnt the best that i have seen out there so it made it a lot harder. but like i said live and learn lol but thanks again. your t looks good too man
