Bad knocking or slipping in rear end or trans

I was going up a gravel road , my rear drivers side wheel spun a little and then there was a knocking,, sounds like it is in the rear end of May be in the trans.is does it when I put torque on the drive train..help !!! I don't won't to mess it up to bad, don't do it as bad in four wheel drive, but in 2wheel drive it sounds like the rear end is going to fall out

You a mechanic? If not, you're gonna need one.
Some guys play a mechanic on the internet but you need a real one.

It's a tough call from where I sit.
I doubt it is in the trans. The re5r05a trans is tough as nails for the most part.
The fact that the symptoms lessened in 4WD makes me suspect it chewed up a spider gear in the diff.

A big noise that goes clunk clunk clunk with rotation is usually a broken tooth. Not chipped. Broken.
Next move for you is to drain the diff, check for metal in the oil, and then pull the cover.
Expect the worst from what you described.

You bet.
Sometimes you can snag a good used rear end for 700-800 bucks here on TT.
Trutrac diff upgrade costs about the same.
Beware your gearset. 2.94 or 3.36 ratio. If you go used rear diff route, you have to get the correct gearing to match your front diff.
