I thought I would share this with my Titan brethren. I had the oil and rear diff. fluid changed today. I'm from the old school and I get rid of factory oil at 1000 miles. The dealer did the oil change (first one is free). I went with Mobil 1. I did check the oil level prior to the change and it was where it should be, with the factory oil looking like honey. Mileage is 1133. The rear diff. was a different story. (MIleage at this point is 1177). I did this job myself. I got an old paint can and pulled both the fill and drain plugs. This oil was black, with a thick blob of "metal fuzz" on the drain plug. I cleaned the drain plug, applied a fresh bead of Permatex thread sealant, installed and torqued to 20 ft.-lbs. Then filled with about 2.25 quarts of Mobil 1 75w-140 gear lube. Cleaned the fill plug, applied Permatex thread sealant and torqued to 25 ft.-lbs. I was pleased to see the engine oil looking well, but the rear diff. oil was something to behold.

I had black lube at my first diff change too. Did mine at about 500 miles. I just did mine today after about 18,000, and the fluid still looked brand new. There was minimal fuzz on the magnet.

So don't be alarmed, it's only the break-in that causes so much metal shavings.

I changed my oil (1369mi) but didnt bother with the rear diff. I dont tow so should I change it now or just wait it out? cheers - Chris
I don't tow, either. I did it because I wanted syn. in the diff. and to get rid of the factory stuff. Gives me a warm and fuzzy...

Yes.........
I went to the dealer today to get an oil change and asked if they would change my diff fluid. The guy said they would replace it and put non-synthetic in there. I told him my diff cover said "synthetic only" and he said that meant they put an additive in there for the limited slip. Uh, ok. Anyway, I canceled that request and I'll do it myself.

That dealer told you wrong. Here is the TSB that changed the specs for rear final drive oil.

Print this out, take it to the Service manager and rip him a new ***-hole.
