Ive had my truck for about two weeks now and find the 9 speed kinda has a mind of its own. I read a ton of reviews on the truck prior to purchasing and everyone raved about the 9 speed with some even saying it was better than all the other manufacturers offerings. Im hoping as I continue to drive it more there is some learning that will happen or something because mine cant decide when it wants to shift and when it doesn't.
IMO as of now I think this thing should have been an 8 speed. Mine cant wait to get out of 1st. It will shift to 2nd just idling around in a parking lot. I get a slight hesitation when leaving from a stop and its kinda jerky then the shift to 2nd and the power comes on and it smooths out. But 1st is not smooth at all. I get the jerky sensation when leaving at light throttle. Give it a good amount of gas and it leaves strong and smooth. But Im not trying to leave every light like im in a race.

Its weird. Anybody experience anything like this? I saw one review on youtube where a guy was reviewing a 2020 and experiencing something similar.

Man, I’m kinda in the same boat. 1st gear is very short. 2nd and third seem really long - coming up the street in my neighborhood, it feels like the truck should shift again...but she usually won’t. It’s smooth for the most part, but I have 4K on mine now. Love it on the highway. Look at the Pedal Commander on YouTube - there are a few Titans on there. That may be my next $300 spend on this truck...

Yeah sounds like youre kinda experiencing the same as me. Ive been looking at the Sprint Booster V3 (same as Pedal Commander) and curious if that will solve the problem. Im gonna give it another couple hundred miles or so and see if it rights itself. If not I may plunk $ down for it and give it a try.

I haven’t experienced the 9-speed hunting for gears. It doesn’t seem to constantly shift up and down. I drove a loaner f150 for about 500 miles with their new transmission - that was a horrid experience. It was ALWAYS hunting for a gear to hang in. Not the Titan. Really, for me, I want a “sport” button like our maxima has, I think the PC will provide that.

It has taken me time to get used to mine. I got a pedal commander and loved it for what it did. I eventually turned it off because I liked it a little too much. I have worked at learning the truck. I do love that at light but good acceleration it shifts through all gears quick and I hardly get over 2k rpm. I’ve gotten over 20mpg also highway averaging 70-75. I’ve got 7400 miles and it’s been 7 months of driving.

I like the 7 speed in my 18 Pro4X. However, I test drove a 2020 Pro4X with 9 speed and thought it was excellent; although a short drive. The 9 speed has many improvements as documented in the attachment including higher torque rating, shift by wire etc. What I have noticed is that my 7 speed has become more responsive, shifts smoother etc. over time. Baby the 9 speed for the first few thousand miles......

When cruising at 75 my rpm's read 1700. 04 and 18 was at 70 mph to 2000. Gas mileage
improved.

That's odd my 19 is turning 2,000 RPM at 80 miles an hour. But mine is the non XD. I can't imagine a transmission any better than the 7 speed in my 19 it's the smoothest transmission I've ever driven I hardly ever feel it shift and it never hunts for Gears the only way I can usually tell it shifting is by watching the tachometer

I have 1600 miles on a '21 Titan. My experience is the same. For the most part, it's smooth. But occasionally not. I agree about the first gear to second transition...can be a bit abrupt. And the 2 - 3 transition is quirky. Sometimes it's smooth as silk, other times it seems confused and hesitant to shift. Decelerating is the same story. Coasting to a stop, around 25-20 mph, the transmission downshifts are intermittently clumsy and quite noticeable. Definitely seems to be a learning curve on how much gas to give it in order to have smoother shifts.

My new 2021 Pro4x transmission (2,200miles) has a mind of its own. Occasionally (15% of the time),while decelerating and coasting to a stop ( at 0-5mph) the truck will downshift (hard) from 2nd to 1st and often propel the truck forward. I took the truck into a Dealership where they confirmed the problem. They told me they spoke to Nissan and Nissan acknowledged the issue but said they don't have a fix for the problem at this time. Asked me to be patient and said "it will be a process" for Nissan to figure out the problem. Does this statement of "being a process" make sense to y'all ? Sounds like Nissan has a major problem with the new 9 speed transmissions.... which means I have an unsolved problem with my new truck. Thoughts on what the problem might be?

Be patient. I'm just getting to 10,000 miles in on my 2020, and I barely notice anything at low speeds anymore, whereas it was fairly dramatic the first 1000 miles. The transmission is absolutely on point anywhere else.

Where Nissan has failed is educating their salespeople on the need for this truck's transmission to have a "learning period". They don't emphasize it enough, or in most cases, have no clue. It's so important to properly set buyers' expectations here.

I'm about 3 weeks in and that seems to have stopped for me. I really like how smooth the transmission is and how well it stays in the powerband when I want to get some take off. I haven't really pushed it yet as Im still in break-in.

That's how I feel. The only smoother trans I have ever driven was a cvt and it felt weird because it would rev super high and not go anywhere if you floored it

I’ve only got 600 miles on my 2021 but I haven’t really noticed any lag from a stop like some folks have. I did however install a pedal commander at 300 miles. The only thing I’ve noticed with the 9speed is a clunky downshift to first or second idk which when coming to a stop about every 20 or so stops. Doesn’t happen all the time and it doesn’t make a noise it just kinda throws you forward a bit

Hi! I just bought a 21 pro4x (1300 miles) and it does the exact same thing you mentioned in you post. Should I be worried? Did yours get “fixed” on its own after a few more miles? I love everything else about the truck however the weird occasional lurch forward has me a bit worried. Thank you!

My 2021 Titan platinum reserve does the exact same thing. I've only pit 1,000 miles on it so far but I'm already starting to get used to it. It's a completely different feel from my 2013 ram 1500 longhorn with 5.7 hemi and 6 speed transmission. I actually like the 9 speed much better. Seems like the 9 speed finds the right gear for everything with no hard downshifts, and very smooth after getting out of 1st gear. If I'm going to pick at anything, it would be exactly what you've pointed out....the shift between 1st and 2nd....but it's still much smoother than the ram 6 speed was.

Also i hope this helps anyone out there that has titan boxes and utilitrak system.....i had a hard time finding a hard locking bed cover that worked with my titan boxes and utilitrak system but i finally found one that I'm very happy with that looks like it was factory installed by Nissan and works perfectly with titan boxes and utilitrak system....Bakflip G2 is a perfect fit. Looks great and very secure. I'll add a couple pics for anyone trying to find a bed cover.

I test drove one 2021 4x that seemed like you described and had as little jerky start then was good. It had 500 miles on the clock.

Ended up buying a different 2021 pro 4x with 100 miles and it does not have the same hesitation. And has been great and now over 1200 miles

I have noticed in tow mode it will stick in the low gears up to 3-4k rpm for the torque and was a noticeable change in how it worked.

Curious if you drove around in tow if it was any different.

Update...i now have almost 1,400 miles on my 2021 Titan and the shift between 1st and 2nd has gotten much smoother. It worked itself out at around 1,300 miles. Now the shifts are as smooth or smoother than anything I've ever driven. Hopefully this 9 speed is a durable transmission that holds up. Nissan seems to put out good products so I'm very optimistic.

I think there is a small mileage jump, not much though, even over the Gen 1 trucks. I read online somewhere (it must be true) that this nine speed was purchased from Daimler Mercedes Benz. I think its a real good unit, just needs some break in. My 2021 is still doing the herky jerky in the first two gears if it isn't under hard acceleration, but only a few hundred miles on it so far.

Good to hear someone else is experiencing the same thing. Man I hope it irons itself out. Its now getting to the point Im starting to get annoyed by it. I give it gas and it bucks around. Im at 400 miles now. If its still acting like this around 1000 im gonna have to talk to the dealer

My dad's 2015 titan only gets slightly worse mileage then my truck on road trips. He said he gets 18-19 on the highway so it must be in town where the difference is?

#32 ·
I have only driven my dad's truck once or twice but it was a nice truck to drive. I enjoy my truck also and hardly feel the shifts but I get 17-20 on the highways here in south texas (as long as I am not coming back to corpus christi. The headwind from the 20+mph wind drops the mileage down to 14-15).

I don't know what you mean about the trans driving you?
