No crank, no start but starts after a few attempts

I have a 2009 Nissan Titan 2WD with only 145k on it. The battery is confirmed to be good, so I ruled that out. One morning I went out to start the Titan and I heard one audible click. I tried again no noise, no crank. 3rd times the charm it starts right up. Sometimes lately it will start on the first try, it never cranks when it won’t start, either a click sound or nothing at all.

I am seeking feedback, what are your thoughts? I was thinking the starter, which sucks because it’s under the manifold.

Before you dig into the starter, check your grounds and your battery connectors.

You are a genius. I replaced the fusible link on the positive terminal and it seems to be fixed. Where can I locate all the grounds? Also very odd but my horn doesn’t work and neither does my interior lights when you open the door. They will turn on if you touch the button but they won’t turn on when the door is open. Very odd.

I'm not a genius. If I were, I wouldn't have had starting issues off and on for 2yrs thinking i was draining the battery! I'm a graduate of the school of hard knocks.

Not sure where all the grounds are. I know the ones in the engine bay are fairly obvious around the battery tray, and there is one on the exhaust and possibly on the transmission/transfer case (but maybe that's the braided ground strap from the exhaust in that area?). Grab a free copy of the FSM (nicoclub.com) and see if there is a list or diagram.

Curious that your fusible link was semi-failed. I'd think those should, by definition, be pass/fail in nature.

Sounds like me a few years ago. I drove it today and it started right up again, tested it several times yesterday and today. I am in shock that it actually worked, the old fusible link looks pretty bad though at least to me. Picture attached. Now I just have to figure out why my horn doesn’t work, interior lights won’t turn on when you open the door, you have to press the lights to turn them on.

Your fusible link doesn't look bad at the plug. All that white stuff is dielectric grease, not corrosion. What I wonder is if maybe the connection where that item bolted to your positive battery connector (the hole in the metal tab in your pic) was making poor connection. My issue was entirely the connector piece. And my FL looks like yours in the plug area.

It’s possible, it seemed tight but honestly I didn’t even pay attention, it was dark so I had a flashlight trying to put the new part on. It started up perfectly again today. It normally would only start after a few tries, like no crank or any noise for the first couple of tries.

I have the same issue in my 2010 Titan. It seems to be a hit or miss situation but pushing in the brake pedal first seems to fix it most of the time. The other times it just a click which doesn't sound very beefy then a couple more tries with the brake pedal pushed gets it. Is there a switch on the brake pedal for a safety lockout or something. I am also going to check the fusible link like dubyam suggested. Thank you!

there probably is something, even if its just a brake light switch that also controls another system. i think nissan has two switches on the brake though, one for lights and one for cruise/other systems.

but there is probably also a neutral safety switch on the transmission that might need adjusting or some type of maintenance/testing.
