Oops, threw my keys at the ground, and...

..when I went to start the truck, no go.

Let me explain. I went to Starbucks last night after a 12 hour day at work (moving the office) and got a delicious coffee. Exactly what I needed. Anyway, I was coming in the door with my son, and I went toi put him down and BAM he knocked it out of my hand onto the floor and all over the carpet. I was pretty pissed.

Anyway, I said a few expletives and threw the keys at the ground.

A little but later, I asked my wife to please go get something out of the truck and she said "Where's the key?" while holding up the key ring. "Isn't it on there!?" She told me it was but just the plastic part. I guess I threw it hard enough to split the key open and fire the little microchip out on the ground somewhere in the kitchen.

So yeah, I had to crawl around on the kitchen floor with a flashlight looking for the chip, finally found it and glued it back into the key. Presto, everything works fine.

It was weird though, without the chip in there, it came on but just cranked for ages trying to start. I think the anti-theft just kills the spark, because everything else worked fine. I learned a few things last night:

1. Don't throw the keys
2. The anti-theft chip in the key ACTUALLY works!
3. Starbucks ain't that important
4. Beer is better than Starbucks anyway.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks, I just learned I am glad I don't have those keys :teethmast

is there a way to program just a key by doing this? I only have 1 key for my truck and the dealer wants $30 for the key and $120 top program it.

When my mom bought her old Explorer(I recently tore up taking through the mud) we test drove it and decided to buy it, When they gave us the key it was the wrong key. It didn't have the chip in it, It wouldn't start at all. Since we tried to start it with the wrong key the theft light is now blinking. So you may want to check your truck to see if it is blinking now.

Try turning the key to the "on" position and leaving it there for like 10 minutes, you may have to have your foot on the pedal to turn the headlights off so the battery doesnt drain. See if the light goes out...it works on some models

When I first bought my truck, I had a spare made without even considering the security chip.

The guy at the key copying counter at the hardware store didn't ask...I had never owned a car with a chipped key.

Took it home, tried to start the truck...it'll crank all day, but never start. I had no security light come on, no adverse affects.

Now I have it just as a spare, in case I lock the keys in the truck...it'll at least open the door!

Remote start doesn't need chipped keys.. and to think I almost spent $80 a pop for programed keys!!

Sucks though but at least you learn something new everyday...

Alot of rental companies will duct tape a chip key under the dash somewhere then provide customers with generic non chip keys to use when renting.Much cheaper and easier to replace than chip keys.

As listed in previous posts. All XE KC's and XE CC's without the preferred package, do NOT have the transponder in the key. ALL others do! As for the turn the key on for 10 minutes, that is an EARLY Ford and Chevy thing. All manufacturers have their own ways of programming and adding keys. Nissan MUST have a programmer attached to program new keys.

Nissans will crank and not fire if the chip is not there or not programmed. Many Fords and other makes will not even crank. Each brand shuts down something different.

All transponder systems work with the same basic parts, but they all use different software and different techniques. Not to mention there are several different chip makers for transponder keys.

If you have a remote start, the installer did one of two things. Either they installed a bypass module(the right way) and installed a programmed key inside of the module. Or they taped a key near the antenna ring(NOT the right way) to make sure your truck would start remotely.

PSNissan, glad you found the chip! If you still have connections at the dealership, they can help you get a new one obviously. If not, find a local locksmith and they should be able to make you a new key and program it less expensively!

Sorry for the essay guys!
