I haven't towed with my Titan yet, but speaking from what I have read and experienced with my '01 Chevy, thier tow/haul mode extended the shift points, made the transmission shift firmer and quicker, and downshift sooner.

I would assume the Titan's tow mode would function similarly.

Does no one read the friggin owners manual???? Jeez!

Why would you shift at all on a freeway? That's not what it's for. Wanna go faster on the freeway? STEP ON THE GAS!
Depends on the situation. If I'm stuck behind some tool going below the speed limit and I need to get over to go around, I'll drop into 3rd before I do anything else. Why? Instant passing power, otherwise I'd have to switch lanes THEN get on it and sometimes that delay is enough to get someone on your butt.

Most of the time I just leave it alone and pass normally, but there are times when that's not the best option. :upsidedow

Plant your foot and go...that's all you need for instant passing power. By the time you reach down and pop it into 3rd or 4th, you could have been 3/4 of the way around the slo-poke. I get on it, THEN switch lanes. Unless you're backroading and putting it in a lower gear to be right where the power is to pull out of a nice turn!

On the freeway, with vehicles in the way of me changing lanes, shifting into 3rd isn't preventing me from doing anything and I'm just preparing for the pass when the opportunity presents itself. :)

Should try doing some 50-70 runs using both methods, I have a feeling shifting to 3rd beforehand is going to be at least a little faster.

Not to mention it sounds much better. :D

I actually understand the reasoning of downshifting prior to passing since it was a must with my F-150 and the Mountaineer. However, the engine and transmission management is so much better than what I had with the Fords that I really haven't had the need to manually downshift prior unless I want to have a little fun. :)

No, I disagree. I don't like the tranny deciding for me when to upshift and downshift. I want to control it, not some finicky computer. I wish you could get a 6-sp manual on these trucks. I think there's too much TQ management control in the up/downshifting. Take a drive in a late model non ECU controlled 4-sp or 5-sp automatic transmision equipped car with a good shift kit and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I've found that with the non big tow 2.94 rear axle, tapping the button (column shift) down to 4th actually gives you quicker acceleration. So, I usually keep it in 4th unless I'm in gas saving mode which then I'll put back in overdrive 5th. Those few extra milliseconds waiting for the transmission to downshift (5th to 3rd sometimes) is a PITA. Downshifting might feel faster because of the surge-effect you get when it kicks down, but it's not in most cases. Accelerating up to the TQ peak in the correct gear (beforehand) is actually faster. In certain situations, I'll even put it down to 3rd if I think I'll need instant neck-snapping power to get around slowpoke.lol!

The smooth shift tranny in the titan was one of the reasons I bought this truck. The transmission has all the brains to do what it needs too when it needs to and it's much harder on the truck than I would be if I was shifting it myself.

My wife's G35 is a slushbox too. She/we wanted a stick, but the time the x (all-wheel drive) wasn't available with a stick (i think it is now) and she definitely wanted the x so we settled for the slushbox. Trust me, when I pull that thing into sport mode and stand on it, it will hold rev's and shift much later than I would ever do if I was shifting it myself.

So, while I'm still a firm believer that REAL sports cars need three pedals, today's automatics are pretty trick...

Apparantly not, lots of folks are too lazy to read the manual and rather guess or be spoon fed the information/mis-information. ;-)

Leave the manual in the bathroom and you can actually learn something new while sitting there.

I have always found that when I need to pass someone on the freeway I simply push the go faster pedal a little harder and the truck simply jumps up and goes faster. I always get a smile on my face (ask my wife) when I do that too. It is amazing the power our trucks have.

This might be hijacking this post but has anyone put a 5-6speed manual in our trucks yet? I know they have that 350z drift car with a vk56 in it I would think its a manual. I would love to have a manual titan with a six speed!

Actually - there are three - it's just a computer controling the third (it does have a clutch and traditional gearbox, just a very unconventional clutch acutator).

I think you missed the point.

No, I get it. But it actually reinforces what I was saying in the first post. The Enzo's 'automatic' is case in point of an auto that shifts better than a human. (Even if the human is still the one calling the shift point).

My first car was a 68 mustang – 302, 4 barrel, cam, headers, and a C4 with a second gear shift kit. I used to have guys swear they could shift faster their 4 speed faster than my C4 would. One ride with me always proved them wrong as the car would get sideways at 50 when it caught second gear…

All that said – in a ‘real’ sports car I’d still prefer to row it myself (although I’d accept a Ferrari in any flavor).

Actually Enzo Ferrari was opposed to an auto trans in his cars. He said you should drive the car, not the car drive you. He died 20 years ago this year.

Wow old thread ... Tow in 4th and also push the tow mode button.
The tow button does not put the truck in 4th.
