Transmission problems

I have a 2006 Nissan Titan with 165k on it. Today on my way to work it started hunting for gears on the interstate. I got to work and it wont hardly pull it self. It acts as if it is still in a higher gear. Reverse works fine and no leaks. Temp gauge didn't get hot either. Time for a new transmission? Anyone have this issue before? Any help would be great...

Yup, I'm thinking the culprit is most likely that the friction plates in the clutch pack are worn out... along with the possible failure of a solenoid in the Valve Body / Transmission Control Module... You should be able to get the low gears back if you turn off the truck and restart it after 10 seconds... however, once the slipping begins, it'll just keep slipping... Check for any SES Codes as well... If there are no codes, you will just need the transmission rebuild kit... but if you are throwing codes, you'll also need a new Valve Body...

Have you been doing regular transmission maint or any at all?

Bought the truck a year ago with 130k. I have done one drain and fill since I've had it. After it cooled off it drove ok with minor slippage.

Ok, given you high mileage and the slipping issues... Start by having any OBD2 codes pulled... if none, then have the tranny serviced, dropped pan and complete fluid replacement... Or DIY...
Drain tranny pan, then remove pan bolts, drop the pan and clean it out, check those two magnets for excessive metal shavings (if they are heavily covered, you're clutch pack definitely needs replacing)... While pan is off inspect the screen on the VB for any excessive debris or gunk...
If it visually checks fine, reseal pan and reinstall (do not overtorque pan bolts) Refill tranny with 4qts, start engine and throw it through the gears a few times... while in nuetral, check transmission fluid level and add fluid accordingly, checking level after cycling through gears again until it's within proper level...
If the VB screen is full of crud, you'll want another screen and will need to drop the VB... (You tube has a good video of the VB removal). During the VB removal, you're going to end up draining more fluid from the torque converter so keep a large pan under the tranny... After the VB is off, remove the old filter screen assy and install the new one, again do not over torque the bolts (these will snap easily) Reinstall VB, reinstall pan, fill transmission w/ 6qts then start engine, cycle through gears, check level and fill accordingly...

Your at a point where you might as well try to save the transmission. 130K and might never have been serviced, that is a long time. I am not recommending it because I have never used but Amsoil makes transmission flush that from what I here works miracles on transmissions. It will remove the burned/varnished fluids sticking the clutch bands. It just may help, if not and you do a full service and you still have slipage then time for a rebuild or a new one. Might be worth calling Amsoil and asking them.

Just another opinion but after what I went through a few months back I fully trust Amsoil Universal ATF. I have been doing drain and fills since 40K miles with Amsoil. Lost a hose 6K miles ago and dumped 7qts of fluid, 1/2 the total capacity. I fixed and refilled in the parking lot of the auto parts store. I refilled with what they had, Mobil 1 ATF. Transmission shifted fine but seem to have slack in the gearing when I left off the gas and the truck seemed slugish. I was a bit worried. I went and a head and did another drain and fill with Amsoil. Drained all the fluid out of the lines, radiator and cooler and added Amsoil to correct levels. I kid you not my transmission feels like brand new. The line blew at 167K ( I doubled checked just a minute ago) and I strongly fill that the Amsoil helped save my transmission. It cost the same at the Nissan fluids.

No I am not an Amsoil Dealer.

Ok, so I solved my transmission problem. Here it is....Duramax with Allison transmission.....Maybe it'll hold up to the stuff I pull. This has been a great site and very informative.

I was going to say you got the good out of that truck but congrats on the duramax. My neighbor has one and it's in the shop a lot but pulls his fifth wheel like nobody's business.

What? Where? How much? I'm looking for an 06 (or thereabouts) for my titan. The hardwire trace in the TCM broke at the bend to the solenoid for the first clutch brake. I pulled the valve body. Pulled the TCM. OPENED it up, just like they do on YouTube, and lo 'n behold, there it was. After splitting the TCM open all the way I was able to clean the break, wrap it with some fine copper wire and then put a little solder on to keep it in place. When I got done it looked real purdue, and sturdy too! Slapped back on the valve body, put in the solenoid coils (after testing), put the assembly in the transmission. Put the pan on. New filter & gasket, of course. And......won't start. I got no gear indicator square on my designated gear! No box around the gear selector at all. And, won't start. Multifunction multisegmented display checks out after doing all the NISSAN factory service manual directs. And still nothing.

So please let me know where you're at?
I'd appreciate it very much and a nice low price.

Thanks!

P.S. the dealer said it's the trans so they can sell a new one at 6500 bucks! And I'm poor with this "pandemic".
