vk45de to vk56de parts interchangability

I've wondered for a while about the possibility of using q45 vk45de parts on a Titan VK56de engine ... particularly the intake manifold, but also the camshafts, heads, etc. The 4.5L is factory tuned for a powerband at higher rpm's, so I'd assume the manifold is sized accordingly with shorter, bigger runners.

I'm sure the chances of the cylinder head chambers matching up would be slim with different bores, but I wonder about the differences in the heads besides that. Are the head bolt holes and water holes in the same place? Does anyone have clear pictures of the cylinder head chambers of the the two engines to compare (as far as squish design, spark plug layout etc). What are the valve sizes and material? What are the chamber sizes? What are the intake and exhaust port sizes? Does anyone have access to the two engine's head gaskets to compare?

It's all speculation on my part but if anyone has investigated this or has reliable information on this topic I'd love to hear it. Even a comparison of head and intake manifold gaskets would be revealing. If the heads where bolt on, it's possible that with head work this could be an involved yet feasible swap option.

Thanks for any input

I know this is an old thread but I am here to revive it. I Got this information from HybridZ's forum..

Well, I've been poring over what engine to build up for my Z project (engine first, then worry about the car, I'll MAKE it fit :D ) and I thought about turbos, and having already had both a powerul turbo car (1986 mustang SVO @ 23psi ~360hp) and a powerful NA car (1991 taurus SHO @ 312hp) my original idea was to build the SHO motor with twin turbos, unfortuneatly it appears I can't make it fit without having extensive plumbing and either horizontal intercoolers or rear mounted ICs, so I went back to the drawing board.

That's about the time when my father gave me a ring and asked me to go shopping for a new truck with him. I of course immediately suggested the new Nissan Titan as I wanted to take a peek at the motor. Much to my surprise the motor was badged as a VK56DE, a VK45DE being the powerplant in a Inifini Q45 and packing about 340hp and 305ft/lbs. Now I was expecting great things from the truck as it also featured dohc, and it performed fabulously, LOTS of torque, smooth accel and redline of 6k. I did some research and found that the VK56DE is the same block as the VK45DE, so it begged to me a question.... How would the VK56DE perform with the VVT heads from the VK45DE? I figure it would require some headwork to open up the combustion chambers to lower compression a bit, but with the 45 heads and a recalibrated computer to give proper A/F ratio, a 5.6 liter dohc with vvt sounds pretty damn appealing to me!

This is the link where I discovered the block is the same, it has a good rundown on the titan too, if your so inclined.

Below is a graph of the hp and torque curve on the VK56DE, linked to infinitinews. Torque is excellent, now just open up the breathing with those 45 heads and even better low end with the VVT, imagine the possibility! Not to mention the 6k redline... drool....

I figure it would be very close, if not over the corvette LS6 numbers, I'm thinking if they can do 400hp and 400ft lbs out of 5.7 pushrod, a 4 valve 5.6 should scream with proper breathing!

Now someone rich go do it and tell me how it works outhttp://www.infinitinews.com/nissan/2004vehicles/armada/power_chart.pdf

I'm not sure about the VK45DE but the VH45DE is a sweet engine from the factory. They are rated to handle atleast 600rwhp from the factory and with just a valvespring and cam swap can easily be revved to 7500rpm or so and gain about 40rwhp.

I plan on putting on into a 240sx S14 later on down the road once my KA24DET S13 is finished.

A VH45DE with headers and intake will make about 300-315rwhp. Thats stock LS1 territory at a WAYYYY cheaper cost of a swap. You can get the VH45DE from TigerJapanese with a Z32 300zx trans shipped to florida for about $1000. Both motor and trans have less than 35k miles on them.

The VK56DE needs the NEW VVEL heads off the new M56 VK56VD. They make 420hp/405ftlbs stock. Thats over 100hp more than the VK56DE just from a head swap lol theoretically.

Old thread, but I have a VK45DE with 340HP/333TQ in my 2003 M45, but I'm looking to upgrade. I'm looking for headers and since the blocks are the same, I'm wondering if the headers from the 56 will fit the 45. Anybody have any info regarding this?
