I've been having this problem last night and this morning. I get to my destination and try to park my truck, but it won't shift to Reverse or Park. I have to turn off the truck and turn it back on to get it to shift. Anyone else have this problem or know of a fix?

Brake lights work, so I guess it's not the brake light fuse.

Do you have problems with getting from P to R also or is it just going from R to P?
I'm thing maybe the shift release solenoid is stuck or relay is bad. Do you hear a "clicking" sound when stepping on the brake?
Also is this column or console shifter?

My wife's old Jetta had this issue. When you press the brake there's a sensor that tells the sifter you have your foot on the brake and it's ok to release the truck from park to drive or reverese.

Not sure if it's the same issue but it sounds the same. It was an easy fix on the Jetta and like a $30 part.

Baseballfanz is probably saying the same thing and I"m just not car savy enough to realize it.

It's a console shifter, and I hear the clicking sound only sometimes. This afternoon seems like a hit or miss...sometimes, I can get it out of park and into drive fine, and sometimes it won't go from nuetral to reverse to park. But if I pump the brakes sometimes it hits the sweet spot and I can switch. Where is the relay you're talking about? If that's bad, then maybe that would be a simple fix...

Next time it happens, use the shift lock bypass to see if it'll go in gear. If it does, then you know it's the brake sensor (unlikely since you said the brake lights work), or the solenoid/relay in the shifter assembly that's gone bad.
If it's the latter, the dealer will likely want to replace the entire shifter assembly. But if you're handy, you can replace the solenoid or relay by yourself.

Btw, this is the shift lock bypass I'm talking about:

You pry off the little cap, and then jam something in there to activate it. I've found that a BIC pen cap works perfectly, lol.

Check your brake switch. It's right above your brake pedal, looks like a little box with a plastic rod(plunger) coming out of it. It retracts when you release the brakes and extends when you apply the brakes. Also make sure the little rubber stop is present and didn't brake apart an fall off. Cheap parts, takes about 2 minutes to swap out.

Sounds like a winner^^^

Since we got back from our camping trip a few weeks ago were having a hard time getting it out of park to go into D or R. It's a column shiftier.

i had the same issue. i opened my floor shifter up and noticed all the crap all over the whole mechanism. Cleaned it with brake fluid and hit it with some wd40. It has been working great since....damn sticky soda!

So before you go replacing sensors...try cleaning it if its as dirty as mine.

Having similar issues as of early this morning. However, my truck only seems to have problems shifting from park to drive. I am gonna look at the brake switch and shift lock/release solenoid as suggested. Seems to be intermit. About 1 out of every 4-5 cycles I can not hear the lock/release solenoid engage/disengage in the shift lever immediately upon applying pressure to the brake peddle, at which point I have to cycle the ignition switch off/on to get it unlock. On a couple of occasions, I heard the solenoid click multiple times once I shifted to drive. At this point, I am I am leaning towards the solenoid verses the brake switch. Any thoughts? Also, does anyone have the part numbers for the brake switch and shift solenoid and where might be the best place to source them from...as always, thank you in advance for any/all help.

Okay so my 2011 is having the same issue. I don’t hear any clicking when I step on the brake pedal. So is that an indication of the brake pedal sensor being the culprit and not the solenoid? I’m having to use the bypass button occasionally to get the truck in park.
