I apologize if these points have been covered a million times, but my searches keep turning up slightly different results.

I’m looking at a 2007 Titan with 164,000 miles. This would be my first Nissan, coming from a couple of Tundras and currently owning a 4Runner. This would be a 2nd vehicle that is used for surf fishing and occasional hauling/towing, but would probably make a 4+ hour trip once in a while when I need to move half my house to go see the in-laws with my wife and kids.

Are the rear ends in the 2007 a ticking time bomb? I’ve read that the 04s had the worst luck with exploding diffs, but something changed in 08 as well. Is an 07 something to run from because of this? I work on my own cars, but doing an axle swap is not something I have the patience or time to do at the moment. Does a true-trac fix the issue in the 07s if/when they go?

I’m also not concerned about the manifold cracks; if they go, I’ll upgrade to some form of performance headers. Also not too concerned with the brake update that came in 08, nor the styling changes.

Just trying to understand what issues come with the 07s, as it’s a super clean, 1 owner truck.

Thanks!

no idea but welcome to the club. someone will come along and answer your questions though. one of hte first gen guys

The '07 titans had a slight HP increase and the diff has been better than the early Mark I models. If it does go, the TruTrac is the solution. Be sure you get good service records with this ]07 as 164K is quite a bit of miles. My '08 has the LT headers and separate cats to address one shortcoming. The upgraded brake specs for the Titan are well worthwhile if you tow much.

Thanks for the information. I am meeting with the owner next week to check out the truck, I’m hopeful he’s got some maintenance records. I have read good things about the Titan’s longevity.

I rarely towed with my Tundras and still barely do, if anything I pull a small utility trailer occasionally. If it works out I will definitely consider some brake upgrades before towing.

If you get a 2007 or earlier Titan, as brake upgrades go, your best option is in this thread. All OEM parts, all good fitment, and easy to deal with. Gives you the 2008-up brakes at the lowest cost.

08 to whenever they ended the gen 1.

although the 07's were an upgrade over the 04-06. I think if everything checks out, youre good to go.

If I don't miss my guess, an 07 with the Armada brake update is effectively an 08 with older headlights, correct? Maybe the only weakness is the diff(s) on the 07. Can't remember when the front case upgrade came out nor when the rear chunk was improved. I know both were done by 2008, but not sure if both were done by 2007.

Yes, I wasn't clear on the brake update from the Armada being something you do to an early Titan to get the big brakes.

Check the exhaust manifolds, when it is cold you will hear ticking untill the manifold heats up and the crack "grows shut". They ALL crack. And check the exhaust tail pipe where it goes over the rear axle, that fitting rusts in two and the hot exhaust melts the wiring harness. The 'Armada' brakes upgrade replaces the calipers and rotor but keeps the original pre '08 wheel bearings, the '08' up grade has a larger center hole in the rotor with wheel bearings to match that. I'd do the wheel bearings while there so go the '08 route. O and my '05 has 310k mi and I've never touched the rear end.

Personally 2008.5 to 2015. 2004-2007 some issues but half way through 2008 they improved the look and some other minor things plus fixed the undersized rotors. I had a 2004 only had the rotor issue. Bought a 2008.5 long bed CC 4x4 after that and regret everyday I traded it in. Bought a used 2008 after that big mistake truck had 100,000 miles on it and was constantly in the shop. Finally bought a 2012 CC 4x4 SL and i love it minus the 20” tires and I put Bilstein 5100’s on it both things take away from the ride I enjoyed with the first three which were SE’s with 18” tires and factory struts and shocks. I will replace the Bilstein’s with either 4600’s or another brand that don’t give such a harsh ride.

Thank you. I know this is an older post and thread, but the sticker on my truck said "2008.5" when I bought it new, and for years I've wondered what the ".5" designated.

It means your truck was built in the middle of the 2008 model year and has all the mid-model changes/upgrades that Nissan made to the gen I Titan.
