2012 Pro 4x Tranny Issues HELP PLEASE

2012 Pro 4x with 2800 miles started acting up. Tranny seems to shift up pre maturely and will bog down until I gas it enough to make it downshift. It gets worse as the temp goes up and will rev up a couple hundred rpms in between 3-4 and 4-5 shifts at operating temp Temp doesn't seem to get too hot... right under half way. I have a bullydog gt on 87 tune with 2* timing advance and everything else stock or standard. Hoping to get some advice and if I take it to the dealership obviously I will uninstall bullydog but are they going to recognize it was on the Titan? Thanks in advance.

Dude have no idea, tranny issues are rare in the titan. I would take that puppy in and see what's going on. Very interested in hearing what they say. Subscribed..

They will not know you had a Bully Dog if you bring back to factory spec and remove. Even if you kept it in, it would be pretty hard for them to claim it was a cause of your problem.

100% normal transmission operation. In 2010 they changed the tq converter mapping to make it upshift early in the effort to get better mpg. What you are feeling is the tq converter locking out in 4th, then unlocking and shifting to 5th, then locking out again in overdrive. This usually happens at about 40-45mph when the transmission is warm with a throttle input less than 50%. Its built upon the concept of a 1:1 ratio being more efficent than tq converter "slip"...not to mention it preserves the life of the transmission/tq converter by reducing heat caused by friction. A way to keep your rpms up a little to reduce the "bogging" is to lock the transmission in 4th gear (if you have a center shifter) untill 60mph, then slap the stick over to 5th(D) to lock it in OD. It does not hurt the transmission as the tq converter still locks out in 4th..just at a higher drive ratio. You may or may not see better mpg doing this, I personally see a very slight increase in mpg over leaving it in "D" the whole time. I went round with this as I didnt think it felt right but after driving numerous new dealer lot Titans and several visits to the dealer I finally agreed it was normal. There is also several threads on here about the same odd shifting your feeling. Hope this helps a bit. The design in genius on Nissans part but that doesnt mean we have to like it :). To be hnonest most people dont even notice things like this...we must be special lol.

EDIT: Also, as you on have 2800 miles on the truck, the transmission is still pretty new and rigid. As it ages a little and breaks in it will get smoother and more fluid. I bought mine with 8miles on it but after about 5-6k miles everything started to set and now she is as smooth as glass.

My '05 does the same exact thing @ 45-50mph. I drop it down to 4th when i'm driving light to light, but i DO NOT get better MPG! LOL :)

I do have a heavy foot though... :hi:

Ya my 08 did it as well but the 2010+ are much more dramtic than the pre '10s. You really gotta drive one...go to the dealer and pretend you are going to buy one just to drive it:). It will surprise you.....

Thanks for all the replies it has eased my worry a bit. I really paid attention to it today on my drive home and it seems perfect till it gets warm which confuses me. I also noticed that it has a feeling of downshifting when you coast for awhile but not like its holding back. RPMs increase and drop and increase. I know I have the "oh no something is wrong" feeling but coming from a decent mechanical background but I just honestly find it odd. I know the only way to know for sure it to take it to Nissan service but we call them a stealership for a reason. LOL thanks for the replies

The tq converter will lock out earlier when warm to keeps the fluid in check(tq converter slippage creates the heat). When its cold it needs to heat the fluid up as it is thick and causes the fluid to not transfer as quickly, in turn causing rigid shifts so it leaves the tq converter unlocked longer.....its just a big balancing act really. To the odd increase/decrease of rpms with the downshift feeling, I believe as FishnAlaska does in saying it is probably the brake assist your feeling. Next time your going down a large hill at speed or with a load behind you pay attention to what its doing...kinda cool. Like I said in my earlier post, pretty genius. The truck is still very new to you and it does take some getting use to but eventually she will make you give in :). Going to the dealer to get someone ASE cert say its good to go is always a good warm and comfy. Update once you come to a conclusion. Good luck

You might be feeling some of the engine assist breaking too. When you let up on the gas, it will catch and try to slow you down at about that speed, something else to get used too.

I'm guessing it's magnified with the tune and timing advance. Unmate your tuner (back to stock) and see if you perceive it the same.

I use the 'autostick' judiciously between 4-5 in traffic/city driving because of what you're explaining so maybe it's normal.

I had an 84' Mustang GT with AOD shift on the floor. If you think this is bad...lol. That transmission sucked royally. So I still feel spoiled with this modern 5 speed OD trans, the first auto I've owned in years.

Try an old Iroc Z with 700 r4 in it....that's a weird shifting unit right there.

I was unaware that 4th gear had to unlock prior to shifting into 5th gear. If it's true, then I can chalk all of my quirks up to torque converter shudder and Nissan tuning.
Most 4 speeds I've dealt with would stay "locked" as they go from 3rd to 4th. By locked I mean about 65% duty cycle which is where a lot of GM transmissions would run at back in the day. The torque converter never actually went into a no slip lockup like ours do.
