4WD won't engage- indicator blinking

I have been using my 4HI off and on the past few days due to ice and haven't had any problems. I flipped the switch to 4HI earlier to get in the driveway and the indicator just blinked and it wouldn't engage. So I drove around the block and did several cycles of P-D-N-R (not necessarily in that order) with no luck. Tried 4LO and the green light flashed and the front tires/diff kept flashing. There is no clicking or anything that I can tell. It just blinks.

I have also recently noticed that sometimes when I lose traction and my SLIP light comes on, there is a sort of grinding/whirring noise coming from the front end. I thought maybe that was some sort of traction control noise, but it doesn't do it all the time. May be a separate issue, or nothing at all.

Have you looked under there to see if anything is leaking?

I've looked under there and can't see where anything has been leaking and there is no puddle in my driveway at all.

Update: This morning I stopped at the donut shop on the way to work and tried again because I actually needed it. 4HI did the same thing, but 4LO blinked for a minute then the yellow 4WD light came on and stayed on and the drivetrain diagram disappeared. Then I couldn't get the SOB to go back to 2wd. I think the 4WD disengaged because I could get the rears to spin, but the light stayed on and is still on.

I have used my 4WD many times since I put the leveling kit on and it has worked flawlessly. I drove home from church on ice in 4HI Sunday morning, parked the truck all day, then that evening I drove to my parents and back in 2WD and just needed 4HI for the driveway at my house. All mild driving yesterday. No goofing off or hitting drifts.

I had that exact issue before and I had to get the electronic control module on the transfer case replaced under warranty. Never had an issue since the module was replaced. The only times I have heard of the wheel diagram disappearing, the electronic module was at fault. Sounds like you are in for a trip to the dealership.

well, the other time it wouldn't engage was when my rear e-brake pads delaminated form the shoes, spun and took out my wheel sensor. you can unbolt that from the back plate to inspect without taking everything aprart though.

but, if it's trying to engage I doubt it's the sensor because if it was broken it wouldn't even try..

Well I got a call Thursday and they said they replaced some weight sensor (their words) and that worked about 4 times in and out of 4wd then threw a code. Called them back today and they said they found a bunch of metal in my transfer case and I needed a new one for $2500 out the door. He ordered one and it should be here by the weekend. I really don't want to get raped by the dealer so I'm wondering if my brother and I can install a new one? We're both fairly mechanically inclined and took auto service at tech in high school. So how hard is the t-case to replace?

That sounds outrageous! I'd get a second opinion and never take anything to the dealer. They rape people and I'm sick of hearing stories like this! Bunch of bastards!
