AC/Heater Fan Failure, Troubleshooting, and Repair

I have seen several folks speak of their problem with the interior fan speed control, but none regarding their fixes. So, here is what I did when mine failed and stayed stuck on HI speed. There are two componts in the fan speed control circut----the dash mounted AC Control Unit and the Variable Blower Control Unit mounted on the blower plenum, just above the passengers feet. Determining which is at fault is very quick and easy, and just requires a voltmeter. Open the passenger door and look at the blower, just above the passengers feet---there is a small rectangular block on the bottom of the plenum with a four wire flat connector on it. This is the Variable Blower Control unit. Three of these wires are large gauge and one, the second from the left, is a smaller gauge wire that carries the control signal from the dash control. Place the voltmeter between that small control wire and ground and set the voltmeter to be able to read up to 5 volts. DO NOT UNPLUG the connector to do this or you will get a FALSE indcation of dash control unit failure !! Now, with the ignition at ON, and the fan control at OFF, you should read zero volts. Slowly turn the fan control towards HI and the volt meter should rise, up to 5 volts when the fan control reaches HI. If this happens, the failure is in the Varaible Speed Control box. No signal here indicates the dash AC Control Unit is the culprit. I hope this helps folks....and I am once again enjoying all 14 fan speed settings and was able to avoid replacing the much more expensive dash control unit.

On edit, I should add that this is for the manual control AC system. I don't know if it would apply to the auto-temp control option also, and I have not gone through that particular section of the shop manuel because it doesn't apply to my truck

UPDATE, One year later Well, it has been a year now, and my blower speed control is still working fine. On occasion while running at a lower fan speed on a very hot, humid day here on the Texas gulf coast, the fan will shift to high for a very short time, and then return to it's previous setting. I believe this may be a "fail safe" mode to avoid overheating the VBC module circuitry, and is not (to me anyway) a distraction or problem.

Hey all, reviving an older post by TallBrad regarding troubleshooting your heater fan. Mine has been changing speeds by it'self for some time now and I finally found TallBrads post. Using his method of troubleshooting, I believe the problem to be with the Variable Blower Control unit mounted on the blower plenum. Has anyone ever replaced this unit? I saw two screws that look like they hold the unit to the blower housing but I didn't remove them yet. Is there more to the replacement? Any ideas what the control unit cost? Everyone can understand my reluctance to ask the dealer in this situation. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey all, following up on this old thread to let everyone know that I finally purchased the VBC module and it has apparently solved the problem with the blower starting and stopping. The part number is 27151-zm70a (3-fin VBC) and listed for $56.28. A two minute replacement and it worked! So, if your blower runs for awhile, then stops, then runs again for awhile etc. check out Tall Brads thread to test unit, then change it out yourself. Many thanks to Tall Brad for putting us on to this repair!

Hey Guys,

I have a 2005 Titan LE 4x4 Crew Cab

I too had this same problem. My fan started going off by itself randomly. Over about a week the frequency increased as well as the amount of time it took for the fan to come back on (after turning it off and back on again). It would take anywhere from 1 to 20 minutes for the fan to come back on. It didn't matter if I was using AC, outside air, or heat. Finally after about a week and half of sweating my a$$ off it quit altogether.

Thanks to all the good posts about blower resistor and Variable Blower Control Module I was able to source the part at a dealer. There was only one resistor available in my area. I luckily got someone else's cancelled special order at an Infiniti dealer. Every other dealership was backordered from Nissan. The part number has once again changed (3rd time). My original module had the 5 fin silver heatsink. The newest model has a 3 fin silver heatsink. The fins are much beefier than the old one.

As stated in the previous post.....The new part is:

Nissan- Variable Blower Control Module 27151-ZM70A

Keep in mind that the pricing varies greatly from dealer to dealer (total b.s.) I got prices from $56-$77, and of course the only one I could find was the $77 one!

Anyhow, so far so good. Problem solved. Hopefully my blower motor isn't failing as well.

Hope this helps!

Hi,I need some advice... I have tested the Variable Blower Control with the voltmeter at the plug and it is working fine I have swapped all my relay that match up with each other in the Fuse boxs and check all the fuses and I'm still not getting the fan to come on ? The ac compressor will engage and pull the rpm down a tad but that it. So i'm I missing somthing. Thank You....Rich Ps. It's getting very Hot here In Arizona.....06 Titan SE :crying:
