Acceleration problem!

Quick back story, the truck is a 2004 crew cab with 144000 miles, and the only mod is a basic cold air intake that was on the truck when I bought it. It had 108000 miles when I bought it. The problem is that for a while I've noticed a slight lack of power but not severe enough to warrant concern. Recently it seemed to take a drastic turn for the worse. I was heading home from work on the highway and attempted to pass the car in from of me and when hammering the throttle between 75% and WOT the truck fell on it's face and started shaking violently. I backed off the throttle and got around the car in front me and babied it the rest of the way home. I did an extensive search on this forum and came up with a few possibilities. Today I have replaced the fuel pump, put sea foam in the tank (thinking possible bad gas), cleaned the MAF sensor, changed the spark plugs, changed the oil, checked all other fluids, did the ECU reset along with the other resets I found on here, swapped the relays on the ipdm, and NOTHING has helped! The most frustrating part is that the truck has not thrown a single code and the CEL has not come on. The only thing I'm not sure of is the condition of the cats other then they are factory parts (don't know it origin though). I really don't want to throw $2000 worth of exhaust at the truck not knowing it'll even make a difference. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? I've seen other threads with people having similar problems but no one has said what finally fixed their problem. Hopefully you titan geniuses can steer me in the right direction!

I've had what you seem to be having. I once changed the air intake, and left the hood open, and end result => dirty MAF.

On a different note, noticed shudder happening randomly at different drive lengths, time of day, etc => dealer evaluated an O2 sensor was going bad (no codes being thrown at time, but saw abnormal electrical fluctuation)

Had same situation again => dealer advised fuel pump was bad replaced with new one, and problem has been solved.

Since the fuel pump has been replaced, I've had not had the same problem since. I know you said you have done some of this, but I hope it helps.

Update!
My acceleration problem has gotten DRASTICALLY worse! The truck will barely make it up a hill! It will not go above 2000 rpm under a load and has me feeling completely defeated. And it still has no codes in the system and has never popped a CEL. It's going to the dealership in the morning since there is nothing else I can do. I debated on taking the exhaust part to look at the cats but being an iowa truck I know it won't be that simple with all the rusted fasteners. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I'm suspecting the dealer will tell me the cats are toast and causing a bad restriction so I will be contacting Cajun bpipes and hopefully get this all straightened out.

hey did you find out what your problem is with your acceleration ?

#5 ·
no i haven't, the dealer couldn't look into it until today so i'm waiting on a call from them. the initial problem had gotten so much worse that i barely made it there last night. the truck wouldn't go over 1800 rpms and anything above that its started cutting out. i will definitely let you know what they say.

#7 ·
ok hope that gets it taken care of
I am having a problem not quite as bad, I have a hiccup on acceleration, but I think also it could be a cracked manifold and cats....so im going to do headers and catted b-pipes....already have the banks cat back exhaust, and ordered uprev yesterday, so we will see if that cures that

looks like we are in this together. last night i ordered jba long tube headers, catted bpipes, all new o2 sensors, and uprev. i'm going to run my factory exhaust hoping that it keeps things close to quiet as stock. hopefully this will cure it since my wife and i are down to one vehicle. i'm definitely not looking forward to doing this in my driveway! i'm just hoping the weather here holds out so i can atleast get everything torn down this weekend. does anyone have any thoughts as to why i never got any codes with the manifolds and cats being destroyed? that one still puzzles me and i asked the service manger and the tech who looked at my truck and they both had no clue.

i had the same issues, dealership mentioned they thought it could be the cats but said when the cats blow, usually it doesnt throw a code. weird. it ended up being a fuel pump though lol.

Yes looks like it...lol
I'm not looking forward to the header install myself, but it has to be done. As I do all the work on my vehicles anyway. Dealers and shops just charge too much and plus they always want to find other things to add to the price.
I have not had any codes either for anything other than my cruise goes out once a month, and I clear the code with my BDGT
We shall see

Hey AdventureT85
Did you order your headers, and bpipes and uprev from Seymore4 and Nightowl from the guys from Cajun tuning. I ordered my uprev from Joe, and will be ordering my pipes from Jeff.

So you are going to tear it down this weekend keep me posted

Crazy turn of events this morning! I took out my left side bpipe and found some debri. Looked up in the cat on the manifold and found NOTHING! There was absolutely nothing for a cat up there! So now I'm wondering if the previous owner had the same problem and just gutted the cat and had someone disable the CEL for the O2 sensors or something. I'm starting to get worried that all the money I just spent won't fix my problem.

Daddyt - sadly when I contacted Cajun they said they were 2 weeks out on parts and I couldn't wait that long so I had to source everything myself. On the upside, so far this hasn't been nearly as bad of a job as I thought it would be. However I havnt started removing manifolds b/c I'm letting things soak in PB blaster. I'll keep you updated.

Okay thanks for the update.
Well seems like the left side may be the culprit....I don't think its a waste of money what you are doing by replacing what we are going to do. Even though I hate spending it...lol. And I really hope it solves the problem. From the sound of what you found in there that's got to be it

Well I'm 5 hours into it and all I have left to do is install the bpipes (they should be here tomorrow) and then I should be back up and running. Definitely not the most enjoyable thing I've done with my truck but not as bad as I was expecting. Everything came apart with relative ease and went back together even easier. If anyone has question on the install feel free to ask as I would love to help. Once I get the bpipes installed I'll report back on sound levels and performance differences.

#17 ·
5 hours and you got the headers installed? nice work man!

#18 ·
thanks! being without my truck for a week was horrible so i was more than motivated to get it done. i can't explain how excited i am to get home and throw the bpipes on and go for a drive! it took all i had not to fire it up last night at 7:30 with just open headers. to be honest it was the look my wife gave me when i reached for my keys that ultimately kept me from pissing off the neighbors.

Great ....only 5 hrs...cant wait to get started with mine...im still waiting on my uprev
And then I will be doing my headers and bpipes....Yeah let us know how it sounds and performs...anxious o find out

You're going to like it.
Trust me.

Did you get your uprev yet ?

well the truck runs better than when i bought it 2 years ago! and its actually quieter at idle and cruising! i assume thats b/c of the huge cracks i had in both manifolds. there is a nice throaty sound on hard acceleration but nothing close to being obnoxious. i seriously can't even explain how much better my truck runs. i haven't done the uprev yet as its supposed to be delivered today so this evening when i get home from work i'll do that. oddly enough, even with installing all 4 brand new o2 sensors i don't have a CEL after driving about 30 miles. i would think it wouldn't take that long for the ECU to realize that the converters were gone. honestly i think anyone who owns a titan should swap their stock manifolds out for headers even if they don't have problems with their exhaust.

Good deal.. great news..so the acceleration problem is gone? I like hearing that it has that throaty sound...I got that when I put my Banks cat-back on.
Can you feel a difference in acceleration. Now Im really looking forward to doing mine

#24 ·
there was a huge difference in acceleration! its faster out of the hole than before the converter took a dump. i'm thinking that converter had been on its way out for the last couple years and when i hammered on it that day was the final nail in the coffin. i'm so impressed with them i would be willing to help other people with the work just so they can see how awesome a titan can be with headers. i've always loved these trucks but after doing the sway i can honestly say i've fallen in love all over again with my truck. and i'm not joking about helping anyone who is gonna do this. i currently live in iowa, and my wife and i just sold our house and will be moving to austin TX in about 2 months. if anyone needs help or has question don't be afraid to ask.

I just had the same problem. No acceleration. I had the cat codes. With 231,000 miles on it I poured Seafoam thru the brake booster line and shut it down. Waited 20 m ins and fired it up. Lots of smoke for several mins. Then ran my fuel very low and added a can in the fuel and ran it. Added another can before I filled up and the next morning it ran great. The ethenol additive had sludged up the injectors and pump. No more cat code.
