Considering 06 Titan...

I know everyone has a bias towards their own vehicle, especially truck owners! I was hoping to find some unbiased, real world opinions from current Titan owners. I currently have an 01 Tundra AC 4x4, this has met and exceeded all my expectations (especially going off-roading), but now I am going to need a truck to pull a toy hauler. I am considering a Titan based on the available off road options (locking diff, etc.) and price ( I can get a 4x4 KC SE for around 26500), I have heard these trucks had an issue with the diff and some various other things. Are most of the issues corrected with the 06? Any input is greatly appreciated. I was considering waiting for the 07 Tundra, but I am sure the price is going to be insane. Thanks!

I really, really like my Titan.....I studied the what all manufacturer's had to offer in 2004 and the Tundra topped my list but it was expensive. Second on my list was a nice Ford F-150 mainly because it's what my dad would have approved of but it was also a little pricey....My trusty Titan was down right cheap and every time I stomp the LOUD pedal, I get a silly little grin on my semetrically perfect face......but I have yet to tow anything.

I was one of those that had problems with the early Titan and Nissan bought it back. I drove all the other 1/2 tons and ended up with a 06 Titan because nothing else measured up.

Now if you are planning on getting a toy hauler, with any 1/2 ton do not get over a 23ft. Once you add the 100++ gallons of water, fuel, propane, TOYS and everything they are really heavy and remember most weight stickers on the trailers LIE, they are much heavier.

My previous trucks were F-150s, an '88 Regular Cab, and a '98 Super Cab. I have also borrowed my dad's '05 Dakota 4X4 crew cab a number of times and spend plenty of time in Rangers, Tundras and Tacomas. Before buying a Titan, I looked over the 1/2 ton (and 3/4 ton diesels) available.

I bought the Titan because of 1) size - it fits my family of four well 2) features - there are a lot of practical features that make it an outstanding adventure rig 3) price - it was literally $5,000 less than an equivalent F-150 or Ram.

My preference would be to have a 1/2 ton diesel so I can burn biodiesel and have the longest-lasting vehicle possible. They don't make one yet.

I'm really happy with the Titan. It's a blast to drive, quiet when it should be, and comfortable for the family.

Well "Troll"....I have had my truck since Nov. 04 and I still love to hear the stock growl coming from the exaust and love to drive it every day. I also own a 97 F 250, 97 Ram 2500 5.9, 87 Ford f250 with a 460 in it and an 89 Chevy 305. All I can say is none of them have a wow factor like the Titan. Love the room, love the full 180 deg. back doors, to many thing to list. Dont know much about the new upcoming Tundra but I dont think many do. If you can wait I would probably wait. But if now is the time to buy, theres nothing like th TITAN>>

Sounds like the Titan is good bang for the buck. Would you guys recommend purchasing an extended warranty? As far as towing, I am going with a fairly light hauler, so I think the Titan or most half ton rigs would handle it nicely. I would even bet that my Tundra would do ok with it, but I think I would end up towing with the OD off the whole time and just overworking it.

Upgrading from Tacoma's the F150 was my first choice. But like Mr.B said, the comparably F150 was a lot more. But I have to warn you the up keep on the Titan is expensive. My Titan is not even 2 months old, and already I had to:

- replace the rear shoxs and struts.
- replace the muffler and exhaust tip
- replace the air filter and airbox
- replace all 4 rims.
- replace all 4 tires.
- Add Sirius radio that should have came with the truck
- Add a hard tonneau that should have came with the truck
- Add step bars that should have came with the truck

Haha, well I am sure that up keep is well worth it! On that point, is there a decent amount of aftermarket options that are actually worth doing to the Titan? I know with my Tundra, it is a pain in the you know what to lift it. I would actually look forward to being able to get a nice lift and stuff some 33" tires on there without having to swap out the IFS for a solid axle!

Eric, did you say struts?
yeah the Rancho lift kit uses Rancho struts up front. Rancho rear shox are extra.. total for kit and shoxs is $1429 shipped.

Here is a pic of the kit and shoxs:

troll you have the input of just a couple of people and what they say is correct but I think Cartman is trying to keep the Titan mods for himself. LOL truthfully this is and will be the measure of the "most bang for your buck" truck you can personally buy right now. these trucks have there growing pains and Nisan has stepped up to the plate and most all dealerships have been very greatful in fixing the problems that some have had but still these trucks are the epitomy of what a truck should be roomy, powerful, large towing capacity, and flat out fun as he!! to drive. that in a nutshell is my $.02

Hi

I'm at the end stages of a lemon arbitration with mine (only 6.5 months of ownership with 50 days of shop time). Yet, I love my truck. The most important thing is having a qualified service department. NOTHING else matters, since most issues are known and have TSB's. How well things get taken care of at the dealer is really important with any car, but especially the Titan. In Pittsburgh, PA (Go Steelers!), there are a number of dealers, but only one I know to be really competent (Sisson Nissan). This is the dealbreaker in my experience. BTW, the Titan is the one of the all time funnest vehicles to drive when it's healthy.

Since I bought an '04 and put on a lot of miles, 29K since the end of July of '04, I bought the extended warranty. However, the Titan's standard power train warranty is 60,000 miles, which includes the differential, (if you worry about such things), so they might not be such a good thing to buy. Their normal 36K warranty period is a shame though. IMO

From the low number of serious problems, if I was buying an '06 I would just put the $ into a CD or mutal fund, and play the very good odds that I'd never need it. They only go up to 100K miles anyway.

You said you were looking at getting the off-road package in which case your truck would basically already have 33" tires(32.7). I believe the off-road Titan comes with the largest truck tires from the factory. But I am sure you meant to say, "get a nice lift and stuff some 35" tires on there ". :smokingco

I was considering waiting for the 07 Tundra, but I am sure the price is going to be insane. Thanks!
You got that right, think at least $5k more.....at least.

Dear Troll,

In the end its about YOU! Buy the truck based upon your likes and needs. I have been a Ford man since my first truck, All I owned until I got married were Fords ( wife brought a '85 silverado and a '69 Dodge Charger along - got rid of the chevy quick), what turned me to the Titan were:

Wanted a 1/2 ton with some pulling capacity
Wanted enough HP and Torque to handle the pulling capacity
Great Looks
Great Service - the "Domestics" here in Alberta have terrible service, and poor attitude towards service... leave it here, we'll fix it when we can. I talked to alot of local owners here and everyone raved about the service department.
and the Titan has more mods than I have pocketbook

Well I live in San Diego, where there is basically one Nissan dealer... kind of a monopoly of sorts, I guess I should check into their service departments reputation.
If you are willing to drive to Tustin (an hour-ish up the 5 fwy), I would strongly recommend Tustin Nissan, and see Mark Iannucci in the fleet department, I won't quote the price he gave me for my Titan, but NO ONE else could beat it. To date I think I have talked to a dozen or so Titan owners on the street, and all of them love their truck. Only down-side was mpg.
