so i did my first oil change. and the computer is telling me its time for an oil change and the check engine light came on for a couple days. how do i clear the code, or do i need to get a code reader? any suggestions. also my headlights suck, they don't throw far enough, is this why i see so many leveling kits, or is there a replacement light i can get? 2012 crew cab
thanks guys

Did you reset the computer after you changed the oil? If you have one with the GPS it has the intervals you can set for oil change and tire rotation.

For the CEL, you'll need to know the code before you will know how to clear it.

For headlights, get HID's. Unless the problem is cloudy housing, then you'll need to clean the housing.

thanks for the reply goodolsen, sparked a couple more questions if you don't mind:
can i reset the oil change warning myself? any ideas on code readers? and i looked up the headlights, any idea on brand? and what is the difference between 6k 8k and 12k, i don't want that blue light you see people driving around with, can i turn the fogs into driving lights?

You can reset the oil change warning light yourself. The instructions for your particular model are in the owner’s manual.

I have this code reader. CAN OBD II Code Reader / EOBD Scanner I know it's Chinese but it's cheap and works well. You can save a few bucks and get your code read at Autozone, Advance Auto etc. for free.

If you want HID lights and don't want blue then 4,300K or 5000K lights are what you should be looking at. 4,300K is white. As you get into higher numbers the light changes to blue then purple. The fogs can be turned into driving lights. Contact JB for your HIDs. He’s a vendor on this site and has everything you need. http://www.titantalk.com/forums/buy-sell/133792-h-i-ds-l-e-ds-nib.html

You don't mention if you have a 2WD or 4WD. (If you add a signature to your profile with a description of your truck and it will help others answer some of your questions) The skid plate for 2WD must be removed to change your oil. The bolts that hold it on are notoriously cheap and break off. Do yourself a favor even if you have a 4WD and buy some decent bolts at a hardware store and replace the stock ones.

Good luck.

Like Quartz said you can reset the oil change warning yourself. For the codes, either get a reader, search on here for how to find the codes with a key sequence, or take it to Auto Zone if you have one nearby they can read codes also.

For HID's the number represent the color temperature. 4300K is going to be the most white, 6000K will have a slightly blue color, 8000K will be more blue, 10000K and 12000K will be almost purple. I would recommend either 4300K or 6000K.

What do you mean turn the fog lights into driving lights, drive around with only those on at night? I'm sure you could, but it probably isn't the best idea.

Keep in mind the number isn't the brightness, it is the color temperature. It is a rating of Kelvins. And 6000K is not the same as 6K as you'll see people put sometime.

Pretty much anything over 6000K is useless as a headlight. Sure they will work, but you'll have diminished visibility, and they are more for looks.

You could just switch out your bulbs to Silvania Silverstar ultra's, some people say they burn out quickly, but I have had mine on my truck for almost 2 years. I've also had them on every vehicle I've had for the past 10 years. They are brighter lights. Surprised you have a check engine light on with a 2012 model year truck, needing to change oil would not set this off. 1 thing that can throw a code easily is if your gas cap is not on tight, it should click 3 times as you tighten it. My wifes Pathfinder threw a code because of this, I tighened it (after searching for reasons for a check engine light and found this to be a common reason) light went out after 2 or 3 startups.

Wow thanks guys for all the response, i have a 2wd crew cab, i live in texas and do allot of rural night driving to give you an idea bought my truck in jan, i already have 12k on it and i would say 8k is night driving on 2 lane roads with no other traffic, i think the CEl was the gas cap it went away, but headlights are very important and the stoic ones suck they throw 50ft doing 70 mph on a night road i need at least a 100ft with a wide spread, there is a different i have fog lights, a driving light throws either far or wide to cover areas that headlights do not, i don't want to drive only with them i want to use them but they to are kinda useless so if i could convert them that would be a help. how far is the throw with the hid, i now understand the color difference thanks again goodolsen and quartz, also thanks for the heads up on the code reader and yes those bold are cheap. so any idea on the throw of the lights, or am i stuck trying to level the truck which i don't want to do for when i pull my boat, i don't want to blind my other 2 lane drivers with my low beams when I'm towing. other then the headlights the truck is awesome.
