I want to get a mounted touch screen head unit with navigation(not the flip out) and I don't know what to get. Reply with suggestions if you currently have one in your truck right now and you would give it a 9 out of 10 or above

I have a Kenwood ddx512 and love it. It's nav capable but I didn't purchase whatever is necessary to use the nav since I already had a gps. The ddx5120 comes with the gps built in I believe. The ddx512 is probably one of the cheapest touch screen monitors that I've seen but I highly recommend it! A lot of guys on here have the ddx812 or 8120 which is the next step up, maybe they can chime in

Talk to tech12volt. He can get you any of this stuff a lot cheaper than you can get it and give you advice and support on the install. There's a few options on his website. Click here to go to the website

Looks like you have a few options. Most go with the Pioneer AVIC series i have seen. Or Kenwood offers a few as well. Then there are several that are GPS/NAV compatible, you just add the interface later or at time of purchase.

I would go do some research on Crutchfield's website for a NON-BIASED opinion, and someone not more interested in the sale vs. helping you. Crutchfield has great tutorials and reviews no matter if you buy from them or not.

BTW.....why are you set against a flip out?

Same size screen.......or larger on some.
Same features.
Can "hide" your setup better while flipped down.
More options or brands to choose from.

The only drawback i have with my Alpine is, it IS a flip, and i wonder about the mechanics of it eventually. (motor) Other than that, it's a real nice piece.

I like the look of it better. Sort of reminds me of a benz for some reason and also i have a local audio hook up that i run a commission system for and he suggested to get a touch because he said most motors go dead in about 3 years (BTW im on your side on this arguement). just because a guy has a sponsor ad on this website doesn't mean we have to hide the other sources that everybody knows are out there.

I've recently become a big fan of the kenwood units. Depending on your budget they are all great. best thing about them is they have Garmin Flash based nav built right in. the DNX-5120 is the entry level unit. very nice unit. Smaller screen then the other two in the series but still a very capable unit. No nav disk to deal with since its flash based. the DNX-7120 is the next one up and features a bigger screen, tilt function. very very nice unit. I have the older version of this one in my wifes Altima. Then theres the DNX-8120. Pretty much the same as the 7120 but the bluetooth is built in. Maybe some other minor differences. Bluetooth can be added to either of the other units as well as sirius, xm, ipod, and backup camera. the 5120 runs between $600-800, 7120 $800-1000, and 8120 $1000-1200. here are pictures from nissan club of my (wifes) Altima.

Sorry forgot their website eclipse-web.com make sure you buy from authorized dealer. The 5495 has a ESN lock and they will replace the unit if stolen. This unit also has a bunch of accessories including cameras, XM, Sirrius, HD Radio, ipod adapters, 5.1 decoders..............

hmm...thanks for the thread guys...I'm considering an in-dash unit for back up camera purposes (esp when towing)...

last year i remember checking crutchfield out for a new head unit and it had a many double DIN options....i just checked it out and it now only lists single din "flip outs" when i do an "outfit my car" filter....

why would this be???

I like the flip outs for the fact they sit higher up on the dash, making it safer to use the nav while driving. I just wonder how well they hold up while open during some seriously bumpy offroading?
My choice if I get one for christmas would be an in dash just because I don't trust the motorized stuff much. Anybody feels generous can PM me and I'll provide my shipping address. :)

OK here is my 2cents...

I personally have had three dvd head units.

First...Panasonic CQ-VD650u touchscreen (not flip up)
This thing is bulletproof, simple, easy to use, ipod compatible, reliable and cheap!! reverse cam input, auto dimming screen
Downsides...Nav unit is extra 800$, picture quality is not the very highest of quality, no rotary volume knob, ipod cable not included but cheap at around 70$ CAD, not the very best sound quality, but not bad by any means

Second...Alpine IVAW205 (not flip up)
Great features, touch screen "touches" your finger back, good ipod control and Nav expandable easily with the blackbird unit, Reverse cam input and fairly priced. and really good video picture.
Downsides..Nav not included, buy it seperate although not very expensive, The volume is is big stages, by that i mean it increases rapidly, and uses a button not a rotary knob, Ipod cable not included and is expensive, manually dimmer screen at night

Third and currently in my titan...Premiere Avic 90BT (not flip up)
TONS OF FEATURES....., wicked ipod interface and control, ipod cable IS included,SD card slot, USB port, top notch video quality and amazing sound quality, Navigation is built in!! no need to buy a module, rotary volume knob. The NAV is incredibly good
Downsides...EXPENSIVE and PROBLEMATIC!!!!
Windows based programming...
the unit is very expensive but you do get alot for your money.
The unit has quite a few "bugs" that sometimes cause it to lose ipod connection, sirius radio connection, sometimes randomly turns off, sometimes randomly freezes up, sometimes wont start up or freezes on start up page. Long boot up time as in around a minute every time you start up the truck, Not a full size screen, but it makes room for a rotary knob, but even the knob has issues, its shiny plastic and slides in your fingers hard to grip and too stubby. manually dimmer screen at night

Hope this helps...

If i did it over again i would buy the panasonic time and time again if i was on a budget and didnt need NAV

I would buy the Alpine again and could easily deal with the few deficiencies, they are well worth the price

I would not buy the premiere (pioneer) again, although its feature loaded, it needs more brain power and better programming, if it was flawless i would brag the pants off this unit
