Interior clicking noise driveing me nuts!

I have a 2004 Nissan Titan that has developed a couple of noises that are really getting under my skin and I was hoping you could lead me on the path to enlightenment. The First noise is coming from under the dash. It’s a fairly loud clicking sound. The Click-click-click’s are about 2-3 per second and they keep going non stop for anywhere from 5-15 minutes. It happens right when I start the truck and after the truck is good and warm, it seems to go away for the most part. Its my guess there is an electric motor under there with plastic gears that drive something on the A/C vents and those gears are stripping and jumping teeth.

Second noise appears to be rear suspension. When I drive over a decent size speed bump, or drive down a curb, or anything that causes the suspension to flex a good amount, I get a loud pop sound like someone some hit my axle with a ballpeen hammer. Online forums say its spare tire noise, but I have checked it and its plenty tight. This one is pretty difficult to narrow down since I have to be behind the wheel driving for it to make the sound. I tried getting my wife to ride in the bed of the truck to pinpoint it to one side or another, and she was absolutely no help at all.

Have any of you seen either of these problems before on the Titan?

Yeup our trucks are noisy.
The rocking chair rear end fineally got the best of me I ended up pulling the leafs completely out and greasing the crap out of them lets see how long it lasts. The popping is probably the tailgate. some people have adjusted the pin with a T40 wrench so it slams tighter and doesn't move this didn't work for me though. and your right it wasn't the spare tire I took mine off for a day or so and the noise stuck.
As far as the interior best bet is to stick your head around under there. I've got an issue that agitates me when I adjust the temp I get a squealing noise from under the dash like the damper or something if there is one needs some grease lol.

anyway good luck to you and if you find a fix be sure to write a how to!

your "Interior" clicking noise is probably a cracked Exhuast Manifold. Only does it when the engine is cold is the first sign of it. Mine did that for months ( and constant days before I brought it in, cold or warmed up ) until I finally took it in ( I think my gas Mileage took a toll as well )

If you have a friend who can help.. lay or sit in front of the truck and IN PARK have a friend tap the gas pedal enough to get a good rev. You should hear the clicks then. If you can determine which side you may speed up the process for Nissan.

Good Luck!

I will certainly look into that exhaust manifold. I have doubts about that tho due to the fact the clicks never change speed or tone reguardless of engine temp or rpm.

I had a suspision that the suspension noise was just coming from the leaf springs. I looked all over and found no damage anywhere.

yeah there won't be any damage I narrowed the squeak down to if you look at the spring where they fasten each leaf together with those plastic clips? You'll see the bottom of them poking through the leaf in between each leaf theres a bushing. I was able to squease it with my hand and it would squeak...

Jack the truck up so the leaf looses tension and grease around that bushing it should quiet down. I used an acid brush so I could push it in there real good. Also where it's bolted to the frame and up by the shackles use some teflon spray or some type of lube unless you unbolt the leaf and grease it good.
That worked for me so far.

In the past I've gotten away with just crawling under the truck and spraying the tri-flo teflon spray all under there real good with the straw per Hudsonvalley's advice, he had the same issue and recomended the stuff it works well untill it rains. but this time it didn't and I saw yamatitan mention he used marine grease on his leafs when he had a squeak. I just used plain black bearing grease it's probably going to attract dirt but I'll worry about it later.

80k miles

Are the exhaust manifolds a common issue issue with these trucks? Aprox what did it cost to repair?
yes they are, at least that's what I am seeing a trend of.

By watching Nissan do mine it doesnt seem like to much of a PITA to switch. Like Just-in said think about headers if it is your Exhaust Manifold.

Try that thing I told you and see if that's it

You could fix it yourself but you will need A LOT of patience. First you will need to unbolt the BCM (right above the gas pedal) then you will need a 5.5 mm 1/4" socket and ratchet for the screws that hold the mode door cam on. There are 3 screws. 1 is the top right screw that holds the mode door actuator to the cam. There isn't much room to work and you have to do it on your back while laying on the floor boards. Once you get it out and start putting the new one in you need to make sure the mode door arms go into the slots of the cam. If you don't get these arms in the right position then the doors won't work properly when you go to change modes from defrost to vent etc. It can be a pain in the @ss!

I also have had this ( clicking in dash) issue on my ’05 titan and fixed it myself. The clicking noise for me was on the drivers’ side, to the right of the gas pedal and up about 10 inches. I would get the noise when I would turn the vents to full defrost then back to Max Air, the noise would only happen when turning back to Full Air. Thanks to TitanTech659 I was able to locate the issue and take a stab at it. Note that there are two actuators in that general area and the one that I was having problems with was the upper one and is Nissan Part # 27743-ZP00A and cost $49 at the dealer in Colorado Springs, Co., the problem actuator is mounted to a plate and the other is not. With the advice I got from the above post from Titantech659, I went into this thinking it will be an all day job and I would need a lot of patients to say the least. Well he was 100% correct and even though it only took me about 3 hours, me neck, back and arms hurt like crazy after I was done; There is very little room to work and I felt like a contortionist at times. It can be done, but make sure you are very technical and have good tools to get the job done. I am not an auto mechanic by any means, but I do pride myself on giving anything a try if it can save me money.

Nissan revised the parts. My factory actuator lasted 2.75 years, the first replacement lasted 4 months, the second replacement lasted 1 week. I am thinking of getting a old style metal choke cable and drilling a hole in the dash...

My '06 does a tick-tick-tick that sounds like a clock sometimes, and it is NOT the injectors. It is coming from inside the cabin, not from the engine. 61K miles.

I have a ticking noise that I thought was under the dash near the steering column, but when I grab the center console at the side tray pocket, next to my right leg and below the shifter, and then pull up on the console slightly ... no more ticking. Plan to shove some foam or something under the console.

OK, I have very similar problem. I have a clicking noise from dash. I have removed the stereo and can the white blend door cam on the passengers side. I watch the cam move nicely all the way to hot and then to cold. When it gets to the very last position of cold, it starts the clicking noise. If I do not turn the cold temp to the very last cold position, then it is OK. If I go the extra one click to max cold then it start clicking.

I'm positve it is no the driver side cam. I can watch the passenger blend air cam do this.

How do I fix this? Is there a last position sensor that I can disconnect. How do I remove it to look at it?

after I replaced my U joint and greased my leaf springs my truck is nice and quite. I have to admit I have been fortunate not to have the dash rattles in either truck.

I don't know if anyone else has ever heard it, but when I shut my truck all the way off and just sit in itfor about 5-10 minutes, it makes all sorts of noises!!! all by itself. One of which seems very similar to this actuator problem(which I have as well, does about 10 clicks or so and goes away). Also when its cold/wet out sometimes I get a squeek til the truck gets heated up(10 minutes or so) and sounds like a drive belt pulley or fly wheel, a buddy of mine has an Xterra and says on his its the bearing for the A/C, any consensus on that?

How do you know which actuator part to purchase? My dealer said there are 5 inside the dash. In my truck the clicking noise is coming from passenger side, right behind the glove box. It is causes by going from Hot to Cold air.

Would anyone know what part to order? And how do you even access that one? is there any instructional videos
