I was wondering how many guys out there have lifted trucks and have had rear diff fails and Nissan has not Fixed it

I have a 7' CST lift with 35's and I am on my 4th Rear diff and 2nd front..

Just this last time that i picked my Truck up from nissan the actaul service manager came out to talk to me and told me to be carefull because he doesn't think nissan will fix another one...

now I am scared to even drive my truck... I mean I didn't pay all this money to not be able to take my truck off road....

all I know is if I break one more diff the truck is going bye bye.....

Don't blame you man. For the type of stuff you are doing I would ditch the Titan and get a Ford or Chevy.

Even though Nissan advertises the Titan as a rugged off-road vehicle, I have a hard time believing that. My opinion of the Titan is it makes a great play and tow vehicle... but would not make a good "off-roader" or "work" vehicle.

Ditch the Titan and let us know how this one turned out.

I respectfully disagree. I take my truck off road quite regularly with no problems. I have 35" tires but no lift. On the other hand I lost a rear end in my Ford F-150 and three Tranny's in my RAM.

If I remember correctly, didn't you buy the truck of the dealers lot lifted? If so then they can't deni a damn thing! It sounds to me like something else is causing the problem though. There are tons of lifted trucks with no problems.

Did they specifically mention your lift? Did all your failures occur while the lift was installed? If not, they are likely going to claim abuse. I saw at least one other instance of this on Titan Talk. An individual had bought a used Titan and had to have a new rear end. Turned out it had been replaced once or twice before and the service manager told him Nissan might not replace it. Of course they did since you can't claim abuse if it's not the same owner! If they say it's the lift, compare your truck to the no fear Titan. They are covering it.

Do you have traction bars, if not that could be a problem? I beat the S^&T outta mine on and off road and have had no problems with the diff so far. Knock on wood!

thanks for the input guys

I bought the truck used but but it only had 12K miles on it....

When I just took it in for my rear diff they told me it has been replaced twice before... it doesn't show if the truck was lifted or not on the records because I ask.. and they didn't report to nissan that is was lifted this time..

but i don't have a warm fuzzy in my belly about driving my truck off road.. theys guys that I go play with have Frontier Nismo's and I follow them so I should be able to go anywhere they go no problem....

and yes as I was talking to the service manager about the lift I look over and see a brand new Titan with lift and tires and I asked him what about that truck.. it is brand new with a lift and tires..

he told me technically nissan could deny the warentee if it broke...

I would just think that I should be able to go off the pavment without worring about my rear diff blowing out.. and the thing is I am not doing anything a little frontier with no lift is doing... so WTF???????????

and I really don't want to install anything else after market untill I know it is fixed.. I would hate for them to say that traction bars or a truTrac caused the problem..

What kind of BS is that? You buy a 4x4 truck to have it lifted and put 35" tires! Ask him for a number for someone you can talk to at corporate. If he does not present you with a number, talk to someone at Corporate Nissan yourself and tell them what the dealer told you. When time I went in to get my CAT repaired and the Service Mangaer was giving me all this mumbo jumbo... I told him a lot of Service Manager talks out of their asses so what ever he is telling me I hope is true. Then I told him I was going to call corporate and asked for his name... after that he did not feed me anymore BS.

Read this and get to know it by heart and understand it fully. It's called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. If you know this act and understand it, it will be much easier to deal with the dealers and in some instances the manufactures scare tactics. Essentially they have to prove the aftermarket parts that you added were the direct cause of the component failure in order for them to void your warranty, and let me tell you if Nissan is claiming the tow rating they are with these trucks you should be able to handle 35's as far as extra added stress on the gears. The lift would have absolutely nothing to do with stresses on the rear end.

If you weren't responsible for the previous two failures they really can't claim abuse.

yes I have heard of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act... and I really don't think I will have a problem with nissan replacing it but I have a feeling next time it might be a little harder to get done...and I have stressed over and over that the lift has nothing to do with it.. and they always come back and say it isn't the lift but the tires....

And how true is it you would think a truck rated at 9K towing capacity can handled spinning some 35's around....

once again I didn't send 30+K to have a truck sitting at a dealership waiting on parts....

and then there is the fact that was the truck lifted the 2 other times the diff went out.. if not then there is definatly something else wrong here... you know what I mean...I am just frustrated... I have never had problems with any car like I have with this one....

well i'm pretty sure they have a axle based/is a dana44. With as much power and torque as these trucks have it needs a dana60 in the rear. As for them not warrantying it, they don't like it when its not lifted at their dealership. It pretty much comes down to if the service manager is a jacka** or not

At the Nissan dealership in Gilroy Calif, they put 6" lifts and 35's on half of the Titans out on the lot...brand new ones...not used. I was in talking to the service manager getting my towing recall done when I mentioned that I was lucky not to have had a diff failure yet just to get his reaction on the subject.

First thing out of his mouth was " Well you know since your truck is lifted there might be an issue getting that done under warranty if it ever does happen "...thats when I hit him up about all the non-warranty brand new trucks they were selling out on the lot...his story changed to ...." But we would take care of it anyways " First thing out of their mouth is Oh its lifted ...no warranty....you just have to grow a pair and TELL them what to do in a way they understand right away . It was really funny to watch the whole jist of the conversation change when mentioning the lifted trucks on the lot

Anyways....the Truetrac is on its way....

trutrac will fix all your problems....mine is on the way as well.......

The tru Trac is nice but why should I have to spend more money on my truck to fix something nissan should handle you know.

and I agree in truack rated at 9K towing should be able to spin 35's just fine

Why not a offroad or work vehicle. Why did you lift it if you dont plan on taking it offroad or did you figure this out after the fact.

I do go off the road often as I go dirtbiking, camping, and snowmobiling, but i don't go "offroading." I enjoy the extra clearence going in the dirt and in winter storms, but in all honesty I lifted my Titan for looks.

As for work vehicle, it is just my opinion, the Titan would not be a good worker because the paint is way to thin, interior scratches too easily, and the bed payload is too low. I see a lot of new 2005 and 2006 Dodges and Fords at various construction sites but have never seen a Titan.

Come into Boston I see them all the time around the Big dig oh but maybe they are all just Belong to the cops on detail...... not they have toolboxes in them and back racks sliding adjustable rails (not the factory ones) and tools such as generators and welders I was actually surprised at how many I've seen and also landscaper pulling trailer too boot. I'd say its a work truck and getting used that way. My opinion is that the paint is too thin also but then this is my first new vehicle and I want to baby it and keep it in new condition for 10+years so we may be to sensitive to it as all the used ones I see for sale look pretty nice and and are not down to primer from paint chips.

They may be lifted and for sale at the dealership, but that doesn't mean Nissan is picking up the tab warranty coverage wise on the drivetrain. Many dealerships will offer 2nd party warranties on used vehicles to cover these items or to use as extended warranties. They are not related to Nissan. 35's in themselves may not ruin a diff, but an improperly installed lift kit might due to misalignment of the driveshaft and axlewrap. Paint iand clearcoats are thin on all new vehicles thanks to EPA laws carmakers must adhere to. The only people laying on thick paint are autobody shops as they aren't held to the same EPA rules. The likely reason you don't see many Titans as "work" trucks is more due to sales percentages and that Nissan doesn't do fleet sales. Look at how many Titans are sold compared to 1500 Chevys and Fords. Another reason is the Titan is only a 1/2 tn truck. Many construction companies want/need a 3/4 or better.

*Sigh*

It is BASED off the Dana 44 it is not the same as what people are used to. It is withing thousands of an inch of being a 9" rear and it is larger than the Tundra's. The Dana 60 is a 3/4 to 1 ton rear end. How many F150's, 1500 Silverados or Rams do you see with factory Dana 60's running around? NONE. It is not needed for this application. Power has noting to do with it, weight ratings do. Many high HP cars run smaller diffs than the one the Titan has.

Going to TrueTrac, a locker or other replacement for those weak spider gears makes good sense to solve the now apparant and single weakness in our rear ends.

Some of the best off-road vehicles were and still remain the old CJ Jeeps. Those with the two piece axle and hubs with the AMC Model 20 rear end had a much larger and stronger diff than those with the Dana 44, but the AMC rear had weak axles. The hubs were held onto the axles by a keyway. Under load, they would spin the hub and break it loose from the axle. Putting in one piece axles solved that problem. AMC never would make the fix in this otherwise very, very good off-road vehicle, especially when lifted and with bigger tires. Either the AMC 20 with one piece axles and a locker or the D-44 with a locker is a very strong diff suitable for all but the most severe off-roading.

Sometimes a very modest investment of just a few hundred dollars can make a vehicle very worthy, when the manufacturer does not want to address the issue.

4 DIFFS??????

Nissan released a Bulletin about the vent tube, to make sure the techs are swapping the vent tubes from the old diffs to the new ones, I wonder if yours was forgotten the first time, and this is causeing your multiple diff failures????

well if it come to the point where I have to do it I will think about it...but I would rather nissan address the issue as is and fix the problem...

hopefully it will fine this time.... I am keeping my fingers crossed...
