oil filter whining, wierd noise

around 32000 miles i stared hearing a whine noise, sounded like a a belt or a pulley, possibly alternator, or power stearing. It started off very low and then became louder. At Idle you could hear it in the truck, once moving it still made noise but exhaust hid it a little. I finally brougt the truck in under warranty at almost 36000 miles. The dealer called me and told me my (cheap) FRAM oil filter collapsed and was causing the whine,. They also tried to tell me that my oil had not been changed in at least 15 -20 k and showed me a shop towel that had hard dry grease on it and said that was my oil, and tried to sell me a motor flush. I said no. They were lying. but he then told me that the oil he put is was synthetic (at my request) and it was fine till 42k.I changed at 40k anyway because I started to hear the wine again. It went away and it had a nissan filter. I tried a different brand filter and again by 47k I had the whine again, I changed again and now I have 51k and the whine started at about 50k.. I am running castrol syntec blend, and try differnt oil filters, has anyone ever heard of this???

Haven't heard of it, but the FRAM filters are the absolute worst thing you could put on there.

Weird situation. Odd that it takes a few thousand miles to start doing it.

Oil filters have a by-pass built into them so if the filter gets plugged up too badly, the by pass will open and allow the oil to flow. If somehow your engine is getting a lot of dirt in you could be plugging within a couple of thousand miles and going into by-pass which could be making a noise. I would definately check my intake for leaks or you could be ruining a engine. Just something else to check.

Yup, and its a wierd noise too. Found that noise after my first oil change. Found the noise comming from the oil cooler. Went to the dealer and they replaced the oil fill cap, and the valve covers because thats what nissan said to do. Dealer said the noise was better but still there. Bought a nissan filter while I was there. Changed the oil later and the noise went away. Thought that was wierd, but ok. Next oil change used a cheepo filter and the noise came back. Went and got a nissan filter and changed it. The noise went away. Will never use anything else but a nissan filter.

It happened with the nissan filter as well. The filter they put on the truck for the oil chage..
I used fram filters or some other brands since new. never head this problem with any other car, And It only started happening at about 32-34k miles.
Also why does the titan use sucha small filter, I see 4 cyl filters that are bigger.....

sounds like you dont maintain the vehicle well and the filters are clogging.

I have a weird noise come from the underside of the engine, primarily on the driver's side. Started about a week ago. I am due an oil change, not sure what filter I put on there last. I haven't pinpointed where the noise is coming from but will be sure to see if it's coming from the oil filter.

For me, it doesn't constantly make the noise, it seems to occur once the engine is warmed up. Was this the case for those of you noticing this whining noise?

The whining noise started shortly after I let a oil change place, change my oil for the 1st time. I normally do it. The noise started shortly after. I had no idea what it was. I was about to file a warranty claim and spend an untold amount of money chasing a sound. I tried the "change oil and filter" thing, and the sound went away. Praise the Lord. I thank the people that posted that info. Very helpful. Saved me a lot of time and money.

I use the K&N PN# HP-1004.
It's a lot bigger an fits like the stock filter.
And a good synthetic oil, unless you've been running regular Dino

That is your oil filter. I have had it happen on the factory Nissan filter, Fram, Mobil 1, Purolator and Bosch.

Since this is oil filter related, went to dealer yesterday to pick up diff oil for a drain and fill and they had this on counter. The Nissan filter looks better to me.
